Upcoming films on terrestrial this week, and there was plenty to choose from:

Wall Street (1987) Film4 9:00pm, Fri 1 Apr
Oliver Stone's tubthumping attack on the financial sector, with a career-defining turn from Michael Douglas, plus Martin and Charlie Sheen putting in strong performances too. The sequel, which was shat on by critics, was bloody good too.

Excalibur (1981) ITV3 11:05pm, Fri 1 Apr
Utterly insane British sword and sorcery movie, with the entire cast of the RSC playing the main roles, and Nicol Williamson not just chewing the scenery, but the cameras and props too. Mesmeric, brilliant, ridiculous - the Arthurian story has never been done better.

The Big Country (1958) ITV4 1:55pm, Sat 2 Apr
Large-scale Western pitting Gregory Peck against Charlton Heston (let's hope it's the widescreen print, not pan and scan). A majestic score that was humiliatingly sampled by Atomic Shitten back in the late 90s. From my cold, dead hands...

Turner & Hooch (1989) Film4 7:05pm, Sat 2 Apr
In honour of the Tom Hanks thread, this enjoyable comedy stars a jowly, rubber-faced, miserabilist hero who helps solve crimes by barking a lot and capering about. Also stars a dog.

First Blood (1982) ITV4 10:30pm, Sat 2 Apr
What do you mean, you've never actually seen it? Well, now's your chance. John Rambo picks apart local law enforcement and has 'Nam flashbacks in a one-sided chase through some picturesque logging country. My favourite Stallone movie, and actually an incredible film too. I defy you not to weep during his emotional final speech, any real man does.

A History of Violence (2005) Film4 11:25pm, Sat 2 Apr
One of the best films of the last decade, a razor-sharp, violent thriller handled with consummate talent by David Cronenberg. For you nerds, it's got Aragorn in it.

The Gumball Rally (1976) BBC2 3:45pm, Sun 3 Apr
Madcap car chase across America, a perfect Sunday afternoon film.

Gallipoli (1981) Channel 4 12:05pm, Tues 5th Apr
Peter Weir's strange war film, with a super early role for Mel Gibson. It's on in the afternoon though, so has probably been cut about a bit.

... and the pick of the week is:

The Big Easy (1986) BBC1 11:35pm, Mon 4th Apr
Hot, sweaty southern drama full of character and charm. Quaid and Barkin are so outstandingly good here that it's hard to see how they failed to become massive movie stars. They make an incredibly sexy on-screen pairing, and despite the serious nature of the plot, everyone in this New Orleans is so charming that you are swept along in the fun and excitement of it all.

It's a good selection with the exception of Exalibur, which is a bag of bellends.

Tom Hanks is indeed a cunting shitbag. And probably a Jew.

^Those are the kind of expletives you could expect to read from Honky if we did have a Tom Hanks thread.

Gallipoli and The Big Easy are brilliant.

As for Tom Hanks, he was fine until he started thinking he was a serious actor. The Burbs is fantastic, one of my favourite comedies, as is The Money Pit. From Philadelphia onwards he can fuck off.

This thread has made me unsure. I've always enjoyed Tom Hanks, comedy or straight, but now I'm trying to think of a time I've thought he was excellent and I'm not really getting it. Admittedly, I haven't seen Cast Away and I was told a few weeks ago that was his big deal.

Ron Howard is an expert at tugging the heartstrings of grown men, the balding ginger dwarf. It doesn't make his films great works of art, and it doesn't make his leading men great actors.

Cast Away really is a fucking unfair film with its ending that's designed to make you all emotional. It's too easy to do that. It would have been a lot more honest if

Spoiler: click to toggle

for example. But no, it's Ron Howard, King of Sublety.

Ron Howard's a bastard. His brother has all the talent in that family.

This week's lot, up to Wednesday at least because it's a great week:-

* Back To The Future Part III (1990) - Sunday 10th April - 17:45-20:00 on ITV2. Probably the least of the three in the series but still splendid, especially because they manage the western theme so superbly. Mary Steenburgen is a very underrated actress, by the way, and never usually lets a film or show down.

* GLADSTONE'S CHOICE - The F.rench Connection (1971) - Sunday 10th April - 21:00-23:05 on Film4. The 1970s is my favourite film decade. The amount of really incredible films produced in the decade really is astounding - and The Cheese-eating surrender monkey Connection is right up there. It's almost perfect. The car chase steals the show but for sheer cat and mouse ingenuity the subway scene is also amazingly good. Gene Hackman may never have been better, Roy Scheider might only have been better in Marathon Man, and the whole thing is breathtaking. And hey, the sequel was bloody great too.

* The Fog (1980) - Monday 11th April - 02:00-03:30 on ITV1. "Ahoy there!" growls Adrienne Barbeau to some poor sods on a fishing boat out to sea. Thus starts the first real lot of carnage in one of John Carpenter's best. Jamie Lee Curtis is on fine scream queen form, her mum puts in a nice extended cameo, but Hal Holbrook's slightly suspect priest steals the show. Possibly Carpenter's best ending, too.

* The Game (1997) - Tuesday 12th April - 00:20-02:50 on ITV4. The Game is quite a lot more than an interesting failure, as it was termed by many critics when it was first released. A really bold effort following Se7en, it works just about fine for me and Michael Douglas is on really top form as well. Plus, Deborah Kara Unger is always a good ogle.

* Rope (1948) - Wednesday 13th April - 13:10-14:50 on Film4. Really, this nothing more than Hitchcock arseing around with a bit of experimentation, but it develops into a great little mystery in its own right although nowhere near his best. Daring for its time in that the two male leads are clearly lovers, and James Stewart has lots of fun as a nosey-parker.

* MASH (1969) - Wednesday 13th April - 21:00-23:15 on Film4. Any other week, and this is my film of the week. My favourite Altman film by some distance, Elliott Gould and Tom Skerritt's best performances, absolutely hilarious in places without sometimes even trying very hard, and quite simply one of the best comedies of all time. The American football game scene is awesome especially.

* Lethal Weapon 2 - Wednesday 13th April - 23:00-01:20 on ITV4. "But he's....he's....blick!" Enough said.

Also look out for Once Upon A Time In The West and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance this week, both of which have been choices of the week previously in our club.

Finally, RIP to Sidney Lumet, too.

I love that scene, the way Charnier steps back on the train is brilliant.

I watched Gallipoli last week and thought it was incredible. The final scene was just stunning and incredibly moving. There have been quite a lot of Peter Weir films on various channels over the last few weeks and watching them again and seeing Gallipoli for the first time I'd say he's an underrated director, maybe not so much by film buffs, but in general he's not someone I hear people talk about that much.
