The Kistek Campaign

The banners of the King were prepared in the early morning. The sun rose in the east, the Atavian war host had been preparing for some time. Blades were sharpened, and shields were lifted. The men packed their tents, and loaded the carts and the other beasts of burden with food and other supplies. They donned their armor and the symbols and crests of their Lord. Men of different households were there, each knowing they had an important task before them. They would fight a fearsome foe in time, but even their greatest desires to bring a great victory and prestige to their house was shadowed by the fear of death.

Even the bravest warrior feared it. Though they may not have feared death itself, they worried who may look after their families and their homes. They worried about those who would mourn their passing, and worried if they would be remembered as valiant heroes or as foolish folk. It did not matter what they thought, their lords had bid them to do battle and they had sworn oaths to do so.

The many flags and emblems of the assembled houses fluttered in the wind. Each bearing unique colors and symbols of heraldry and each protected by devout and loyal Atavians. There were humans among them, many Atavians were not so pleased with this. They were in fact a lesser people, they smelled and had no sense of decency but their King had thought them to be useful and perhaps they would be.

As the forces continued to disassemble the encampment and prepare for the journey and campaign ahead of them, a faint noise could be heard in the distance. After a while it was revealed that it was the sound of many galloping horses heading their way with all due haste. The Sentries yelled out that Lord Tsevaris had retrurned, and accompanying him were the horsemen of King's Household. They had arrived just in time, the marshaled warriors were just about to set off. The Lords gathered as Tsevaris made his way through what was left of the camp, perhaps he had some interesting news to report to them.

Tsevaris

Tsevaris entered into the prescence of the King and the remaining Lords before moving to address them all."I have returned from my scouting mission in the Kistek lands, and we were able to remain relatively unseen while scouting the area between the camp here and the Kistek settlement of Tusglen. We sadly were unable to find any suitable defensible positions in the immediate area that the enemy army could be lured into, but did gain another interesting bit of strategic information." Elatur then called for a soldier of the scouting party, Eranius to be brought into the tent amongst them, not explaining what his signifance was before following: "My Lords, my party managed to estensively scout the town known as Tusglen, and investigation has revealed an evident weakness in this particular settlement, and in effect the Kistek war effort. The town is surrounded by open plain, which will alert them to attack early but they have no natural defenses or walls of any sort to attempt to hold us off. We estimate the enemy strength in the area around three to four hundred men, and no signs of any magi or witchcraft were present under our watch as well. In my opinion, the enemy has concentrated a small and easily managed force in Tusglen, and we should press the advantadge of the division of their forces. This man here is my scout Eranius, he will elaborate further on troop equipment and the layout of the town itself with the commanders should need be."

Duke Arinan had arrived a short bit in the the report of the Moff and the scouts that accompanied him, however it was not detrimental to his understanding of the situation. He silently reviewed the facts in his head as Elatur described the areas and the settlements that populated the region. Since his initial arrival at the camp and the short amount of time that had passed since then, the war host had grown into a force of significant size and strength to combat the entire strength of the Kistek. However the reports presented before them offered a unique opportunity that would both allow for the exercise of Atavian superiority with minimal casualties amongst the combined armies of his majesty.

"My fellow lords and his majesty, I would like to recommend a course of action based on the reports provided by Moff Elatur." Vladimir motioned to the map on the table making a quick motion with his now armored hands. "With the knowledge that Tusglen is genuinely light on both defenses and general manpower we strike to obliterate the settlement while they remain weak. Beginning our assault on the settlement at night we can catch the enemy off guard and begin the destruction of the enemies lodgings through the use of flaming arrows from our archer contingents." The Duke was not aware of the exact composition of the army though he assumed that the King's men would at the very least supplement his own force of archers.

"While we unleash our attack on Tusglen we may need to consider the possibility of barbarian reinforcements from other settlements. The areas are not extremely close but the event could occur. Unless we can guarantee a swift destruction of our foes we should set up cavalry sentries to keep watch for enemy reinforcements. Should I primary force be occupied with combat in Tusglen we should form an axillary troop to preform delaying actions should the situation call for it. The circumstances a bit unlikely but these simple precautions will both help in preemptive defense and the ability to run down any survivors or runners from the settlement." He moves to make a few more quick motions from Tusglen to the other two settlements. "Following our pacification of the region, I advise we simply continue our campaign and destroy the enemy before they can assemble a large singular host to battle us."

Lord Isak, having been near the outskirts of camp aiding his men disassembling the defenses, was one of the first men to know of Tsevaris' arrival, allowing him to hear the entire report. Then hearing Duke Arinan give his proposal of a plan.

"Duke Arinan and I are of the same opinion. I believe it would beneficial to eliminate this threat during nightfall, when they will be least expecting it. Flaming arrows will quickly rain terror upon the enemy. If this plan is accepted, I believe our victory would be swift and plentiful. In addition to the axillary force, I believe we should have a force move around to the rear of the settlement. As fire rains down on them from one side, we could cut off the other side effectively preventing retreat. It would be an honor if I was put in charge of that force, and allowed freedom to charge into the town when the time comes." He then looked to both the King and Grand Marshal Harcourt for a decision as well as to hear what they planned for the battle to come.

King Morgan listened to the news and he made no attempt to hide the satisfaction he felt at the report. After listening to the few Lords whom had spoken on the matter, the King called the council and spoke.

"Lord Tsevaris, ever are you a man of valiant efforts, your report comes well suited to our devices, despite the fact that we cannot locate said ideal ground, an open plain poses a brilliant and effective ground for battle. It is true that if we strike at Tusglen we may split their efforts in half. Despite the fact that we are outnumbered, Atavian steel and courage will easily win this day against these savage hordes." He glanced over the collective lords and set out a map before him, a hand ran to the said location, "Lord Jaime, here we have a vantage point to keep away from their surprise attacks and ambushes, I shall assign my army to act as the vanguard in this affair. It is my personal opinion that the best course of action would be to form a strong bulwark of our heaviest men-at-arms on the front. Behind them we shall supplement them with an auxillery of the lighter men-at-arms, a good distance behind them we shall supply our archers and assign a guard about them. Aye, we may depend upon our cavalry to act in part with Duke Arinan's plan."

King Morgan paused a moment as he ran his hands over the planned formations, brows furrowing, "We will need a contingency plan in case these posed plans do not fall in accordance, I leave this up for debate amongst you all, that is, assuming that you gathered have no disagreements with my proposed course of action." He paused once more and then lifted his head high and smiled to them all, "In accordance with due glory and honor that shall be had, I would be honored if you may all ride with me to the forefront of the battle where it may be thickest, the soldiers will be filled with high hopes at the sight of their Lords at the front."

Osgar the ever silent kept to himself while the lords were speaking. He listened in to the plans with no interest. He looked at each and every man and guessed their flaws, peering into their raw decadence. He scratched his shaved head as he waited, then suddenly came the most powerful voice in the hall, that of the king's. Osgar, brutish and huge, drew in every word with great respect. To him, and his kin, the King was the strongest man in the world, and none, not even mighty Ædelstan, could contend with his might. Osgar the berseker would follow this man's every command as though it were his spiritual duty, and it was. When the order was issued, with pride the barbarian wardband joined in a savage chant to praise their king. "Se cyning hagolian!" Osgar chanted "Hail the king!"

"I will be glad to ride at the fore with you my liege; as is my duty as Marshall, and my honor as your own blood. I am of the same mind as you all. A set-piece battle engaged in such a matter as his Majesty has suggested would provide us the most benefit and allow us to take full advantage of our own superior discipline." Lord Jaime Harcourt followed up. "Fighting in the night, I warn you, will negatively impact our ability to not only maintain this discipline but also to issue orders. It is my belief that the benefits may outweigh the costs however. Our signal flags will not be visible in the night, though I will devise a system of torches to replace them."

"An initial bombardment to bleed them. A raid by outriders to drag their encourageable leaders to pursue - and then a full meeting of their own ragged and confused number against our ordered lines. I would prefer to avoid the skirmishing that would occur if we were to assault their camp directly at the first opportunity - our ordered formations would be unable to maintain themselves amidst the squalor."

Arinan sighed under his breath at the caution both the King and the Grand Marshal both chose to exercise in the planned assault on the town. While under circumstances that weighted the Atavian force at a disadvantage he would be in full support of a degree of caution, however in this case the King's warhost numbered close to that of the enemy in addition to the worth of an Atavian being more than that of a mere human barbarian. "While I appreciate the air of caution put forward here, I do not believe such precautions need be made for this event. We have sufficient forces to assault this settlement alone and such an assault during the night would both catch the enemy off guard and demoralize them as their home and fellow men are burnt to ash. We need only made a sole decisive strike against the enemy to ensure victory." The possibility of reinforcements from another settlement did indeed loom over the operation, but with the precautions he had outlined it would be a possibility easily managed.

"Our enemy does not suspect us to assault their homes as they believe us at a disadvantage in number and because they view us in such a capacity, we are no more than cowards to them. Are we to let barbarians mock the strength of Atavia? To mock his majesty's and the valiant force that has been assembled here for him." The Duke moved to Harcourts wish to lure the enemy out into an assault, and while it would be advantageous to some extend the plan allowed the enemy to ready itself after the initial opening. "Should we chose to simply let the enemy come at us at their own leisure they may actually act on the side of caution and wait for their allies to overwhelm us! They may be barbarians but even a fool knows when he cannot win! We must seize our enemy by the throat and wring victory from his neck!"

"Do not let our enemy stack his advantage until we have no other choice, do not let mere men leave you but men quivering behind your soldiers! We are Atavians and we serve his majesty loyally and I for what know that every man in my force is ready and willing to die to protect his crown, and I am not above such a fate. Stand with me and prove your mettle and show our King that you are warriors and not women!"

King Morgan openly applauded the Lords whom spoke on his behalf before he rose to speak once more his final speech and bit on the operations.

"I say to you all, Glory be to Odeum and Glory be to our Atavia! Let us march at once with our heads held high and our steel sharpened for the doom that we must bring upon these savage Kistek. By the grace and love of Odeum, we march!"

He gave the order to his sergeants to prepare the hosts to ready for the march.

"Instruct your sergeants to prepare your men, I want the army ready to march within three hours time. My vassals, I am filled with honor and hope when I look upon our hosts and unity. We stand alone amongst a world that would see us wiped clean and exterminated. The work we do here is bloody indeed, and despite that our beloved Odeum does not look kindly on the work we must do... it is necessary. So I say to you all, worry not for the death that will come, look to the honor and glory that you shall receive when we ride home to our estates with knowledge that we have victory over those whom call the devil that Ordutan is, Lord!"

Lord Isak Hauclir then stepped forward before the attending lords could go. He gave barely a moment before he opened his mouth to speak.

"My lords, I agree with Duke Arinan to the utmost degree. His plan is one that you should consider more closely before we proceed. Should we not attack them in their village, we will be giving away the advantage of surprise. By calling them to us, we instead allow them rally time and the ability to gather all their forces. Rather than an all out slaughter on their troops, we would be getting a counterattack. If we do as Duke Arinan asks, we will be more successful and we wont be viewed as scared weaklings hiding waiting for their attack. I say to you now that we should attack them in surprise. If this is all, I shall take my leave." Lord Isak then left the tent, hoping to leave an impression upon the lords. He left behind a messenger of his to give him his final orders for the upcoming battle. Returning to his men to be sure they were ready for whatever final decision was made by the King.

With the initial reports and discussions have finally ended, the King motioned to his squires to prepare the men for movement. The sound of trumpets soon followed the raising of his hand, and the final tents were packed and the carts were loaded with all the supplies they would need. Tusglen was only a few hours ride from the camp, but they would move slowly now to reserve the strength of the men and to keep the formation and supplies tightly formed and guarded.

The King and his retinue of Lords pressed forward at the front of the formation. Behind them them were the Men-at-Arms who marched with good discpline and timing. In the rear and on the sides were the King's horsemen who were screening from attacks but it also looked as though they were keeping the individual levies of the lords in place.

The countryside of the Kistek lands was plain and boring. The day's march yielded no sight other than grass, and a few trees that sparsely populated either side of the marching column. It was a beautiful day, the sun was warm but there was a cool enough breeze that provided the best marching conditions. The march itself was rather silent, only the sound of boots and hooves could be heard.

The Kistek were known to be great stalkers of prey, and they wanted to keep their attack a secret for as long as they possibly could. They were just a few miles away from Tusglen when they stopped the march and prepared their encampment. The sun was about to set, and the settlement was clear from any activities at least from what they could see. A scout by the name of Edwin presented the news to the King and the lords.

"Your Majesty, and your esteemed Lordships I have the reports of the situation. Tusglen sits openly in the plains, no natural barriers are present and no walls protect the city. It seems that the Kistek are unaware, but we were unable to get closer without revealing ourselves. No enemies are present within a few miles in any direction from Tusglen, your Horses are ready for your command my King."

Lord Duncan Locklair gripped the reigns of his horse, listening to Edwin the scout's report. Nodding contently with the information he then leaned up to brush his horses' mane. He knew whatever fighting was to come would be fierce and crowded, worrying him as his horse 'Faileas' had only fought with single opponents or small groups. Shaking his head Duncan reassured himself that his mount would preform under whatever level of stress, after all the two of them had been through thick and thin.

"Excuse me, servant, could you bring me some water? I believe I'll need to quench this thirst rather soon."

Looking back to the other lords, Duncan scanned each one for confidence briefly before setting his eyes upon the King.

"My liege, with your leave I shall begin preparations for the sayings of prayer and blessing for our soldiers."

Lord Isak surveyed the present lords, wondering who of them would bring home the most glory. His own force had seen enough battles on the northern border to know what was to come. Bloodshed would soon follow, of that he was certain, but he wondered how much Atavian blood would be shed. The most pressing thing on his mind was the fact that both the tactics presented by Duke Arinan and himself had been blatantly ignored. Overlooked and forgotten. Should they meet the Kisteks in the field, Isak believed the battle would still be won, but with much more difficulty than otherwise. Attacking the village itself posed a great strategic advantage, giving them a surprise factor that would be lost otherwise.

He looked from one face to the next, finally landing on the King and wondering how he intended to fight the coming battle. Should it be in the field, Isak would find his place at the forefront, surrounded by his personal forty troops. A group that knew how to work well together and who could keep each other alive. While they were all well trained and experienced troops, drilling before a battle was a practice which Lord Isak valued as necessary.

"Your majesty," Isak gave a half bow to King Morgan Lane III, from where he sat on his horse. "I would like to inquire as to your plans for the coming battle. That is, when we will commence our attack and what our plan of attack is. It would beneficial to know when our attack will begin as well as how I should prepare for the battle, whether it be preparing for a night raid or a full scale frontal battle."

Lord Harcourt turned to his fellow lords, after conversing in whispered tones with King Lane. "To speak of courage and besetting men in the night is folly. Bravado, in it's purest form, has little place in war if one is to take the task seriously. We are not at the lists here, the defeated does not go home with naught but a bruise. I will continue with the plan as I have laid it forth, and if the enemy does not take the bait within a reasonable time I will set upon them with all the fury of our host. I did not propose that we lure them far from their camp - only that we fight them from without, within a stone's throw and capable of raining arrows upon them."

"Good luck in the coming battle, blood of my blood. I will drink with you and make merry when victory is Atavia's. Maintain your discipline, hold to our stratagem, and fight with honor. As I would for you, were any among you Marshall. This is all I expect of you."

King Morgan nodded in agreement as he tempered his decision,

"Aye, we shall follow the formations we've decided to set out earlier in the morning, Lord Jaime shall act as the Supreme Commander of our forces during the battle, his orders are to be followed to the mark without hesitation and without disdain. Our strength against their numbers lies in the discipline and professional soldiers we host. But take heart, ye mighty! There is still glory to be had against these Kistek thralls of Ordutan, I and yourselves shall take the forward posts at the head of our armies, we shall be amongst the first to charge these savages! The man who slays the most shall receive the fief of Cirith and one-thousand goldmarks!

Now, temper the courage of your men and prepare them for the coming battle, I want the army ready within an hour's notice."

Morgan nodded and saluted his gathered vassals, nodding once more to Lord Duncan,

"You have my honor and good wishes, prepare them at once."

Duncan nodded his head in thanks to the King and trotted off towards the priests' pavilion, scanning the faces of the soldiers he passed by. He saw by and large grim determination and even in many cases a smug look of superiority as the soldiers glanced on ahead, to where they would soon march to battle. Reaching the priests' pavilion Duncan dismounted, removed his helm and walked inside.

"Father, it is time, gather the priests and follow me please."

Leading his horse by the reins on foot Duncan sent message to the various sergeants to somewhat organize their troops in formation to make easier the blessings. As the men in the camp assembled somewhat loosely Duncan quickly organized a route for each priest to make through the troops to ensure each individual was personally blessed by one of them. Watching as the priests made their rounds, Duncan as the last person took his blessing and escorted all but one of the priests back to the pavilion, then escorted the remaining priest to the lords' tents to tend to the other nobles.

Meeting Lord Duncans priest in the tent, Elatur quickly requested a private ceremony with his men before he recieved his blessing, wishing to be sure his brothers took part as well. He then spoke his part to the nobles gathered."My brothers, now we shall all have the power of Odeum as we destroy these barbarians, they will not stand an hour against the power of our mighty host. I shall return to my tent to remain amongst my men until the time for battle is upon us, I trust we all know our duty and shall not falter nor fail in our attempt to eradicate the subjects of Ordutan." Elatur then walked calmy towards King Morgan, addressing him: "My Lord, should you permit, I shall ride with you in the battle, watch your back just like old times Aye?"

The King dissolved his council for the evening, perhaps he had grown weary of the constant bickering amongst his lords or perhaps he just wished to retire before the next day's battle. He had ruled in favor for Count Harcourt, his most trusted lord it seemed. This did not tide well with the others who had clearly expressed their desire to bring glory in one fell swoop that evening. When the King had retired to his tent, a few lords gathered in covenant.

Duke Arinan, Viscount Hauclir, the Moff Locklair and representatives of the houses Morcant and Udiel met when the sun had gone down. For a while they spoke, letting the light of the day expire into the sky until the moon and the stars began to shine over the darkened fields of the area. They were not pleased with the plan, the battle should be over by now they thought. Perhaps in the night the Kistek would leave their dwellings and move into their unguarded and undefended homes, and they did not wish this.

The fate of their houses was soon discussed, whether they should follow the orders of their King and wait till day break when the Kistek were refreshed and energized for war or to strike now disregarding the King and his orders. Should they be successful it may bring them glory ever lasting, should they fail they would jeopardize the Kingdom to the mercy of the foes that surround it.

They reviewed their own household men-at-arms, the scout reports and came to a decision. They would forgo the ruling of the King, and rest the future of their household on the strength of their own arms and merits. The plan was simple, they would establish camp at another location in order to secure more of the area and when the time was right they would file out.

They quickly moved, time was pressing against them now and by the time they established them selves again it was already late into the evening. The men were unsure of what was going to happen, they had all been alerted that they would campaign in the morning, when news reached their ears that their lords were planning an attack of their own they became confused. However, loyalty to their lords ran deeply. Their oaths to their Lords were sworn before the campaign, and they would fulfill them now.

They moved in a single file out of their own encampment under the cover of darkness, using the light of the stars and only a single torch to guide them. The men numbered just less than two hundred, roughly half of the War Host and they were ready for war. They were the best of the men from their respective realms and they would prove this and bring honor to their families. While honor ran through the minds of some, loot and pillage ran through the minds of the others.

They reached the outskirts of the Tusglen, and laid low. The town was silent, it was likely the Kistek were drunk oof of their foul beverages and weary from the celebration of their previous victories against the defenseless Atavians. Their end would come soon enough, the men were silent one sound from them would surely end this attack quickly. The archers of House Arinan prepared their arrows, wrapped them in oiled tarps and let loose a volley of flaming arrows. The arrows stuck the thatched houses of the Kistek setting them ablaze, and lighting the area. Two more volleys were launched setting enough of the town ablaze that cries from the Kistek could be heard, the unsuspecting rabble lept from their beds and scrambled to place the fires out.

The Duke Arinan drew his blade from its sheathed and looked to one his sergeants and give a brief nod that notified his man-at-arms to call the soldiers to battle. In a deep, stern and hardened voice the Sergeant let out a cry "For the King!" and stood to his feet as he drew his own blade, it was followed by a wave the same action across the lines of the men and the battle would begin.

They rushed into the town using the fire as their guiding light, the Kistek were completely caught off their guard. They held pails of water, tarps and other tools to fight the fire and they were tools unfit to fight the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the Atavians. The Kisteks soon enough became aware of what was happening to them, and took to arms of their own and began to fight the Atavians in brawl like fashion amidst the burning township.

The Atavians like a raging tide hacked and slashed anything that stood in their way. They were physically stronger than the humans in any case, quicker and had keener eyes. The darkness had hindered them, but not as much as it hindered their foe. Blades crossed and shouts were exchanged, the fires were burning the town around and victory was soon at hand.

The Lord Hauclir led a company of his own men through the town, with his sword in his hand he made quick ends to those that stood before him. He got lost in the frenzy of the battle, separated from his personal guard and soon found himself surrounded by four Kistek, each had possessed looks in their eyes. Perhaps they could slay an obviously high ranking Atavian that evening. They looked at each other with devlish smiles and then to Hauclir who was now gripping tightly to his sword in one hand and a torch in the other. He looked around, but aid seemed too far away. He fell to his knees bowed his head and all within a moment he leapt to his feet throwing the torch into the face of own his assailants. Confusion struck the the Kistek, and the Viscount struck one at his left leg hacking it cleanly off. He dodged a thrust from a spear from one of the Kistek narrowly, but forced the spear down using his elbow and lunged his blade into his enemy's neck. The final kistek rushed at him with a mad fury but the Viscount jumped high into the air, turning his sword downwards and gripped it with both hands and plunged into the skull of enemy. Hauclir walked to the one with a missing leg, and ended him cleanly. The other was just now recovering from his torched face, but was shoved down by the heel of Hauclir. They locked gazes, and Hauclir simply smiled before picking up the torched and setting the Kistek on fire.

Dawn was approaching, the dim light of the stars was quickly being replaced by the ever brightening light of day. The fires were nearly finished and smoke was all that was to remain. The Duke Arinan was not frantic, in fact he moved slowly leading a pack of his personal guard. They followed obediently fighting off any Kistek that came for them. The Duke moved through the town killing off the the remaining Kistek. He was smooth, not showing any real emotion or lust for battle, but he was talented with a blade he struck his enemies with great ease.

Duncan Locklair moved at his own pace throughout the battle, when dawn broke he found himself inside a long house. It was dark and untouched by the flames that took the rest of the town. It was grander than he would imagine it to be, perhaps it was a meeting hall of some sort. Many benches were found and at the very end of it stood an elderly looking Kistek who was bending over a pedastool with a bowl of water. He was mumbling something inchorently, and continued to Ignore the Moff and his guard, who slowly but steadily approached him. The old man moved his gaze to the Moff, his eyes were bloodshot and he grinned revealing rotting teeth with his wicked smile. He held in his hand a smooth stone marbleized with black and red. Next to him was another stand with a wooden chalice, the old man proceeded to laugh and slapped the chalice. A clear liquid splashed from it, Duncan managed to avoid it but it caught his guard who immediately shouted in agony. The liquid seemed to burn him very quickly, it eroded his helm and his face and his companion was dying in excruciating pain. The Moff was angered by the laughing of this old fool, and threw his sword at him impaling the old man in the stomach. He walked to the old man's corpse, who at the moment of his death released the stone from his tight grip and it laid on the floor beside him. The Moff Locklair could not remove his gaze from it, until shouts of victory came from outside. He took a cloth and wrapped the stone in it and secured it safely.

The battle was over, the men cheered with victory and mourned for their lost. Eighteen of their brothers in arms were lost in the fighting, but they slayed over 200 of the Kistek and took the settlement, all that remained now were the old the women and the children that survived the carnage of the night.

At the King's encampment, a messenger arrived. Smoke could be seen in the distance but they were unsure what it could have been. He asked for the King's presence, who was awaiting his own messenger sent to fetch the Duke Arinan for the battle that morning. When the king presented himself, the messenger greeted him. "Hail his Majesty King Morgan of the House of Lane. It is with humility that his Lordship the Duke Arinan bid you to Tusglen. He has claimed the town in your name in the late hours of the night."
