My computer is so slow and so inying and runescape is always lagging. As of right now I have 256 MB ram and would like to expand it to around 1GB. I would get a set of 2 because they say when you buy a pair the computer runs smother. EX: 2 sticks of 512MB.

If any one has a good place to buy more ram at not so high price could the please tell.

One more thing could you use ram from any computer and put it into another? and do they have computers at a recycling plant that I could get a cupple of RAM sticks?

Thanks! :D

Well it all depends on your system specs right now...

What you mean by "have 2 sticks makes it faster" is referring to Dual Channel Memory. Depending on your motherboard it may or not support Dual Channel Memory.

Also another thing that you have to consider is what type of RAM your motherboard can run.

There are 3 main types of RAM:

  • DDR
  • DDR2
  • DDR3
But then within each of these types it is separated into different speeds of RAM:

  • DDR 266 (PC 2100)
  • DDR 333 (PC 2700)
  • DDR 400 (PC 3200)
  • DDR 500 (PC 4000)
  • DDR2 400 (PC2 3200)
  • DDR2 533 (PC2 4200)
  • DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)
  • DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)
  • DDR2 675 (PC2 5400)
  • DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
  • DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000)
  • DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
  • DDR2 1100 (PC2 8800)
  • DDR2 1111 (PC2 8888)
  • DDR2 1142 (PC2 9136)
  • DDR2 1150 (PC2 9200)
  • DDR2 1173 (PC2 9384)
  • DDR2 1200 (PC2 9600)
  • DDR2 1250 (PC2 10000)
  • DDR2 1300 (PC2 10400)
  • DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500)
  • DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
  • DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
  • DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
  • DDR3 1625 (PC3 13000)
  • DDR3 1800 (PC3 14400)
  • DDR3 1866 (PC3 15000)
Generally the speed does not matter as long as it fits the type of RAM you need. (ie DDR, DD2) It is just that it adds more speed. But you must not get slower RAM than your Motherboard FBS because if you do then you risk the chance of you computer running even worse than it does now.

EDIT Also you can add more RAM by taking sapce directly from your Hard Drive.

You do this by right clicking on "My Computer" and going to properties. Then you click on the Advanced tab. Then you click on Performance Settings. From there you then you click on advanced and then Virtual Memory and then change.

From this menu you can directly setup part of your hard drive to be used as RAM.. although it will be a little slower than normal RAM.

This is what I recommend from just a quick search on Newegg.

184-Pin DDR SDRAM
1GB (2 x 512MB)
DDR 333 (PC 2700)
And it is only $50.99

lol well to answer your question about how do I know so much about computers... well currently I am studying for my A+ Certification. And yes like Pop said I am planning on building a computer from scratch.

About how you come about building a computer well... here is a list of what you need:

  • Processor
  • Video Card
  • Motherboard
  • Hard Drive
  • Memory
  • Case
  • Power Supply
  • Monitor
  • CPU Fan/heatsink
  • CD/DVD Drive
  • Floppy Drive
  • Case Fans
  • Sound Card
  • Speakers
  • Other peripherals (keyboard, mouse, tablet, ect)

The main thing about making a computer is making sure everything is compatible... of which I was in the process of going in depth about that.... but it was way way too long by the time I had reached the 4th item, so I stopped.

Parts can be bought from:
Newegg
Tiger Direct
Fry's
Amazon
Also there are many other places all you have to do is a google search for them.

Thanks and I was looking into that A+ program also. I was thinking about taking it because my brothers soccer coach said he took it and that it would do me good if I looked into it. I looked at it a little but did not see were to beging. I want to take it because I would like to become a robotic enginer. It would look good on resumase that you give to tec colleges. Could you explain how it works and were would we take the exsame and what I could do to perpare for it? How long have you beed looking into it? Mabey we could stat shareing new things that we have learned (even thow you are prety ahead of me... but I love teck and I can learn quickly). Will ill go and read the wikapidia site you atached.

Thanks! :D
