![]() As many of us eagerly are left watching the year of 2011 conclude, we're taken back to some of the numerous ways that we spent those three-hundred and sixty-five days. You could be revisiting the parties you've been to, or you could be like me and be left reminiscing the movies and video games that have graced me with their presence. This is why, I happily offer to you the 2011 The Golden View Awards, where I will name off the best movie, best video game, most surprisingly good movie, and more. The movies and video games weren't released in 2011 for the record, but were instead reviewed by me in 2011. Oh, and because of the fact that our old website was deleted, I can't trace the movies and games that were reviewed in late 2010, so they'll be included to. With that being said, let the games begin. ![]() The Golden View's Best Game of 2011: Batman: Arkham Asylum Point of View: There were numerous games that could have claimed this spot, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was in several ways what inspired me to make The Golden View. It is what helped metaphorically pull the curtain up for me and exposed the show that can be provided with some of these games. I had played numerous games that provided much enjoyment, but, and I hope that this doesn't hurt too many feelings, it was the game that made me discover that there was more deserving games to be in my console than the likes of Grand Theft Auto. Sands of Time was absolutely amazing, with it's flawless combining of hack and slash along with the platforming that helped it grow to prominence. Ultimately, the only reason that this game doesn't capture this award is because of the fact that it's characters weren't particularly remarkable. The Prince was witty, Farah was sweet and amusing, but that's essentially where the descriptions conclude. Arkham Asylum aside from it's great game-play and story, actually had arguably one of the most colorful cast ever to be witnessed in a video game. One can argue that my opinion toward the game is bias, and I'd have to reply with saying that I was bias, but that's irrelevant. I grew up on Batman, and he'll forever be a character that I look to if I'm desiring to be inspired, and for numerous, after they grow older, they begin to forget about the figures that enriched their childhood, I've only grown more mesmerized by the character. Mark Hammill did an extraordinary job at returning to The Joker character, and it wasn't solely him stealing the show as essentially everybody provided a commendable performance. Gears of War 2 is the other runner-up partially from the story, and tremendous voice-acting of the characters, but also because of how much it improved compared to the original. I remember whenever my older brother gave me Gears of War, I had assumed that I was going to get nothing special. I was pleasantly surprised to find a game that entertained me tremendously, then Gears of War 2 got in my clutches and gave me something phenomenal. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Gears of War 2 were three of the only games that ever blew me away to the point where not only did I consider them some of the best, I considered them an art-form. Gears of War 2 wasn't actually in the running anyway, because of the fact that I didn't actually review the game, but I would've probably gave it number two or three. Arkham City better take it's rightful place as video game of all-time or it will look dull in comparison to what was Arkham Asylum. ![]() The Golden View's Best Movie of The Year: Donnie Darko It was off of recommendation that I even bothered to pursue Donnie Darko, and to be perfectly honest with you, had that not happen, I probably wouldn't have ever watched it. That's a crime in itself, because it was truly something of wonder. The movie didn't have no problem asking your mind out, putting the moves on it, and blowing it relentlessly. Jake Gyllenhaal, along with several other notable names, cranked out a commendable and enjoyable performance, but with all due respect to them all, it wasn't necessarily the cast that retrieved the award. Although, they most certainly didn't hurt their chances. We've all witnessed those movies that throw around what is at first deemed as pointless information before concluding and making that information appear as inexplicably vital. More often than not, this attempt at being creative backfires and they come across looking more stupid than anything, but that's not the case with this movie. This movie came across as faintly realistic and excruciatingly unorthodox before concluding as absolutely brilliant. The award wasn't easily captured as there was numerous movies that posed it a challenge. Much of the time with The Golden View was dedicated to the horror genre where we saw numerous movies composed that posed a severe threat. Take a look at Freddy vs. Jason, or Halloween: The Curse of Micheal Myers, they filled us with much entertainment, and Robert Englund's performance as Freddy filled us with massive amounts of wit as he cranked out arguably the most amusing performance out of anyone in any movie that I've reviewed this year. The Social Network and Black Swann provided me with something that I hadn't expected, and that is two fiercely well-made and deserving candidates. Batman Begins gave us something that I feel is densely underrated in the sense that it's dangerously close to being as good as The Dark Knight, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 may very well rest as my fourth favorite movie of all-time. ![]() Most Pleasantly Surprising Game: Hunted: The Demon's Forge This is one of those choices that I made that comes across as controversial, especially to myself. There were numerous games that I played over the three-hundred and sixty-five days that I hadn't expected to be anything special. I remember whenever I purchased Prince of Persia: Sands of Time merely because I had a couple of spare dollar bills, and then was blown away by something incredible. Sadly, as much as I'd love to give the game an award merely for the sake of giving it an award, I don't think that it rightfully deserves it. Whenever I purchased Prince of Persia, sure, I hadn't much of an idea for what to expect, but generally what I expected was something good. Whenever I purchased Hunted, I had expected something undeniably mediocre, and the only reason I bought it was because it was the only game at the store and I didn't want to go anywhere else. It'd be an understatement to say that what I got was pleasantly surprising. Creating a game that utilizes fantasy aspects flawlessly with fluent controls, similar to that of Gears of War, was formerly unheard of, but that's what I got. The story wasn't phenomenal, however, that doesn't change the fact that the game was incredibly enjoyable, and it's not an understatement for me to say that I spent as much time playing this game as I did with any other. In merely the first two weeks that I had the game, I beat the campaign twice, and I had been continuously playing the crucible mode, trying to garner enough money to collect some of the remaining achievements. Most Pleasantly Surprising Movie: The Social Network It might be difficult for some of you to believe this, but this was actually probably the hardest award to decide on. I had essentially already had it worked out with the other awards, I knew what my favorite movie of the year was, and I knew what game I enjoyed the most, but the movie that surprised me with how good it was!? It's difficult because I purchase DVDs rapidly, I'd say that I've gotten over thirty movies in the last couple of weeks, but they're the movies that I get for around a dollar each, and are generally independent films, without direction. That makes the surprise of actually seeing a good movie, seem all the more pleasant, and honestly, I've been left baffled with numerous movies as of late. Easy A was one of those movies, Emma Stone's amusing wit and personality was enough to get this movie it's nomination. Although, I expected, merely because of the positive reception and numerous accolades that it retrieved, for Black Swan to be a good movie, it also surpassed my expectations greatly. Hell, even Halloween IV was surprising, after having to deal with the heap of garbage that was Halloween III, and the less than stellar sequel to Halloween found in Halloween II. But, I'd have to say that the most pleasant surprise of a movie that I had gotten all year was The Social Network. I just, didn't really know what to expect out of the movie going in, I've never been too supportive of Face Book, and I knew little to nothing about it's creator. I wasn't familiar with the actors, and honestly, I just didn't know how they were going to stretch the creation of Face Book into a two-hour movie. They did it, though, and they did it very well. An actor that I could probably review the career of in thirty minutes or less, Jesse Eisenberg delivered a magnificent performance as Mark Zuckerberg, arguably matching Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory in the amusement that he offered me. The story was entertaining from the beginning to end and it could very well rest in my top five. Worst Movie of the Year: Friday the 13th I won't even pretend to care about what the people who commend this movie think, because it was horrible. If you thought that Dahmer vs. Gacy was bad than you mustn't have witnessed the atrocity that is Friday the 13th. It was boring from the beginning to end, and regardless of it having one of the coolest conclusions in the history of horror, it gets the award for worst movie of the year. ![]() Worst Game of the Year: Superman Returns It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a piece of garbage that I happily threw off of a skyscraper because that's the only way that I feel as if justice will be served. Superman sucks by himself, but whenever you take into account the lack of inspiration that went along with the graphics, and also include the horrendously formulated controls, you've got yourself the worst game of the year. |
