Amaya’s Flashback: The Dragon King’s Minstrel

Amaya: I don’t know if is was rage, jealousy, or simply an accident. All I can remember was the harsh shove followed by the crisp slap of the river waters. A four year old child doesn’t know how not to panic, and I foolish took a deep breath in surprise and sealed my fate. I was surely doomed to die by a single stroke of misfortune. An ill stroke of luck.

In a gray clad city two figures shiver against the cold of the evening air. One, a woman, stares intently at a fountain in the middle of the square as her coat clad back faces her companion. It matters not what words are spoken between them. Something has ended, there is sorrow in the air making it heavy and almost unbreathable. The woman sighs
~I have failed. She no longer can hear the words of her companion and leans over.

Avon? What are you?

The woman ignored her companion’s questions and tossed a silver coin into the fountain.

Avon: Here’s for luck.

And with that the woman dove head first into the shallow fountain.

AVON!

The woman’s former companion reached in to the fountain and pulled out all that remained, copper coins and a soaked jacket… all else had vanished.

Ev’avon, known as “Avon” in the human realm, let her human form melt away as she swam through the water portal. Her chest grew smooth and scaled like a snake’s, her feet grew until they were long and webbed, her hair fell out and was replaced by a violet mane that stretched from her crown all the way down her back, her pupils became slits, and lastly three antennae sprouted from her forehead and draped behind her. She cursed her ill luck as she swam back “home” to the Kingdom of the Sea Dragon.

Avon: I’ll be disowned at this rate. None of my sisters had any trouble snagging a mortal prey. I can just hear mother now, “You too picky with what you eat. Lower you standards a little, no mortal is perfect.” No point in looking for a gift for the Dragon Princess if I can’t get the best quality human bones to make my… Oh my, what is this?

The little Amaya blinked rapidly as she gazed though the river water and at the odd creature who stared back at her. Too small to understand what death was, Amaya didn’t know what to think. The creature tilled its scaled head and swam in circles around the girl. Amaya was surprised to learn that she could breath.

Avon: Well, hello, little piglet. What brings you to the wide world of the underwaters?

Amaya: ….I’m not a piglet. I’m a girl.

Avon: Oh, rest most assured- you are a piglet. I’m quite knowledgeable at such things. Who was silly enough to tell you otherwise?

Amaya: ….I don’t know…. Everybody.

Avon: Everybody? Is this “everybody” a piglet just like you? Or were they of a larger size.

Amaya: …..yes? What are you?

Avon: Me? I’m a mermaid. Can’t you tell?

Amaya: You don’t look like a mermaid.

Avon: What would a piglet, who doesn’t know it’s a piglet, know what a mermaid looks like?

Amaya: um, I don’t know.

Avon chucked in amusement. Children were fun to play with. Tasty too, once you added salt. However, she wasn’t really interested in eating this one. A more pressing matter was at hand.

Avon: Well it’s been nice meeting you, miss piglet. But I’m afraid I have to let you drown now. Avon released the bubble that was keeping Amaya alive and afloat.

Amaya: Wait-!

Amaya cried out before swallowing a mouth of water. Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb, other days…well, let’s just say it’s a matter of luck. And as luck would have it-

WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY RIVER?

A thundering voice stopped the mermaid in her tracks and Amaya felt a cold scalely hand grab her by the throat just before she passed out.

-----------------------------

Avon stood before the dragon court nobles and twirled in the enchanted waters rather sheepishly.

Avon: I wasn’t trying to drown her. I bumped into her as I was traveling back to the castle. I have prepared a gift for the princess and I was on my way to deliver it.

DragonGuard: Why should we believe a sea monkey? You’re kind loathe humans above all else, do you not?

Avon: I wouldn’t say “loathe” completely. --Avon’s eyes glazed over-- I care not for the humans, so long as Earth is protected. --the mermaid blinked and came back to her senses-- What mean to say, lords, is I had not intention of harming the child, but it was not my business to save her either.

The child in question was laying on a table like evidence barely breathing, but alive. The waters around the Dragon King’s palace were enchanted to allow both fresh water creatures and sea creatures to visit without harm and it allowed for mammals to breath comfortably. After all it’s hard to have a conversation with a whale if they have to resurface at inconvenient intervals. So, while Avon could breath comfortably, she was still rather anxious about having three very large dragons looking at her accusingly. The most terrifying beings often had a soft spot for children. Particularly immortals since it has difficult, if even possible, for them to have young of their own.

Amaya: Please…. Good sirs… she speaks the truth…. --the girl on the table gasped-- I had fallen into the river by mistake…

DragonGuard: I see. Still there is now a more complicated matter of what to do with you now, child. You had fallen into my river, but I cannot let you leave now that you know of out existence, nor can I care for you in my house.

Avon: Well, we know what MY idea was-

DragonLord: Silence, monkey.

Avon: Silenced, but I did come all this way to present a gift to her highness.

DragonGuard: Very well, present your gift and be gone. We’ll decide the fate of the child

--Avon Gladly left the Dragons to their own devices and swam to the entrance of the Throne room where there was a line of sea creatures already waiting to give their glorious gifts to the lovely dragon princess. Avon entered the room empty handed. She had thought about giving up the girl as a gift or using the child to make some forbidden potion. Something interesting to give the princess, something unsea-like. But her plans had been foiled again. There was, however, one thing she could give. The single sentence of the child had inspired her.

Avon took to the floor and bowed.

DragonKing: Well, daughter of the freshwaters. What gift have you brought to the court of the Ocean?

Avon: My lord, I have traveled both land, air, and sea. I’ve seen every angle of the world of man. You know of my kind’s nature, and you know of a great many things. Surely you know that there is nothing above or the below the waves that I can give you, for all things are already yours to have, to hold, and to take.

DragonKing: So… you have brought…. nothing?

Avon: No, my lord. I have brought something better then the gifts shining at your feet, for it is something only I can give.

-----------------------------------------------
Amaya tried to wrap her head around what she had been told.

Amaya: So you work for the princess now?

Avon: That’s right. I’m her first and official minstrel. The king was so moved my (adlibbed) honest words that he gave me the position. It’s quite an honor, really. I have a position were I can speak my mind and influence royalty. That is if I say it prettily.

Amaya: And I’m-?

Avon: The princess’s pet. I thought of the idea myself. It’s quite the clever deal. Piglets are smart, as far as pets go, so you’ll be well behaved and easy to train. Who knows, maybe you’ll out to be something other than a pig when you grow up

Amaya: What else can I be if I’m not a piglet?

Avon: You could be the first sea banana.

Amaya: …..What?

Avon: I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship. Hahaha!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spark notes for Lazy people:
1)Amaya gets shoved into a river by a classmate at the orphanage she lives at.
2) Avon fails to complete the ritual of her people, mermaids, which involves drowning a poor sucker and dragging them to the kings palace as a tithe
3)Avon opens a water portal which inadvertently connects to were Amaya was drowning.
4) Avon, who is still mad at humans, plays with the 4 year old girl before leaving her to drown
5) the dragon who lives in the river thinks Avon is trying to kill the girl by dragging her down, a big no-no since dragons like children.
6) The dragon takes Avon to court and puts her on trial
7) Amaya confirms Avon's innocence to the crime of drowning a child in a sacred river
8 ) Avon is freed and gives a speech as a gift to the dragon king's daughter
9) The Dragon king is so impressed by Avon's wisdom about the world above (human realm) that he makes her his daughter's minstrel
10) Avon helps appoint Amaya the princess's pet as a thank you for inspiring her to give a speech rather than a gift.

Amaya's Flash Back Part Two: Mountain of the Crows

The dragon king paced the halls of his undersea palace nervously as his daughter, her minstrel and her lowly attendant watched. The three made an odd pair. One was a "sea monkey", a creature that was sometimes mistaken for a mermaid because of their humanoid appearance and habit of leading sailors to their doom. The dragon king's daughter was fairly young for a dragon and had that "rebellious phase" aura emitting from her. If she were a human, she would have had a quirky beauty to her, like a fairy or an imp. Lastly was the only surface dweller allowed to reside in the pristine pearly palace. The girl was of fair complexion (most due to the lack of sunlight deep under the water) with long dark hair and striking blue eyes. She was roughly about the age of nine by human standards, but my now she had emerged herself in the structured lifestyle of her employers that it was hard to say how old she really was. To them she was like watching a chia-pet grow.

Dragon King: This- This is absolutely unacceptable! They've gone to far this time! Asking that I give up my beloved child.

Minstrel: To refuse would lead us to conflict with the Tengu, Sire.
the minstrel plucked a string on her instrument making it hum
Minstrel: I dare not question your judgment, but I would not want to fight those who are called "the dogs of Heaven".

Dragon King: I know! There must be something else we can give them! Something they want- or--
The king pauses in mid-thought as he glances at his daughter's human pet. His daughter sees were his gaze lead and frowned

Dragon Princess: Absolutely not!
she takes the girl in her arms
Dragon Princess: You are not going to send this girl in my place!

Minstrel: Brilliant your majesty. I am in awe. Why our little girl here is pretty enough, for a mortal. I doubt the tengu could refuse such a gift. She could most certainly pass off as a dragon's kin.

Dragon Princess: No! I won't let you! She's my friend! You can't pawn her off. Besides it was my mistake, I shouldn't have angered the tengu like I did. It's only right that I face judgment in their courts.

Finally the girl spoke up
Amaya: But princess, you're going to become a lordling soon. If you miss this chance how can you succeed the the court? You must continue your education here and become a servant of the sea and the earth to protect them.
she kneels
Amaya: I am but a lowly servant to your highness. I would gladly take your place.

Dragon Princess: But I can't let you do that!

Amaya: I do it not because you are my master, but because you are my friend.

Minstrel: All well and good, but my king there is something else you must do to insure our efforts don't go to waste. I have a little idea. Humor me and the tengu couldn't possibly refuse our most generous gift.

---------------------------------------------------------------
sometime later at the boarder between the land and the sea the Dragon King meets with the leader of the mountain tengu to present his "daughter"

Tengu guard: You must be joking! This insult won't go unpunished!
But his leader cuts him off

Sojobo: Who is this girl, Dragon King?
points to the bowing Amaya

Dragon King: This is my daughter. You can ask anyone in the court and I have the documents to prove it.
Everyone knew that Dragons were fond of official records
Dragon King: I adopted her in to my house many years ago and I see her as kin. I must ask once more that you retract your request noble tengu.

Tengu were known as man-eaters like many otherworldly creatures, but occasionally they would show an odd fondness for humans as well and teach them many things. Sojobo flew down and inspected the girl carefully, but when she looked up at him with her wide innocent blue eyes the tengu king froze slightly memorized by them.

Sojobo: No, we will take the girl into our flock.
the tengu placed a giant hand on the girl's shoulder gently so as not to startle her
Sojobo: Let not your hear bleed to badly, Dragon King, we will not eat the girl.

The tengu knelt down to scoop the now frightened girl. She glanced at the Dragon king unsure until he nodded to her and then the girl let herself be lifted.

Dragon King: Farewell, child. I believe you are in good hands.

Sojobo: Indeed, king, and know that there is no animosity between our two peoples.
He glanced at the girl's face
Sojobo: In fact I'd like to thank you for returning a long lost treasure to us.

As the tengu rose into the air, the tengu lord asked his new charge-
Sojobo: What's your name, little bird?

Amaya: The dragons called me xiǎo nǚhái.

the tengu made a face and muttered.
Sojobo: How tasteless. Typical dragons.

Sojobo: I will give you a much better name more suited to you. You shall be called "Amaya"

And with that the tengu flew away with their little gem in tow.

Amaya Flash Back 3: The Seeker

Amaya: Onii-san, what's this stone here?
The young girl had been living with the tengu nearly three years now and she found it most enjoyable. The fearsome creatures were (for the most part) very kind to her and they taught her many things that the noble dragons would not.

Sojobo, or "onii-san" flew over to see what his young charge was pointing too. On the path leading up to their temple home was a decent sized stone surrounded by a ring of smaller ones. The formation clearly wasn't natural.

Sojobo: That's a memorial stone. It's a like a grave, but nothing is buried there.
an irritated expression crosses the tengu's face.
Sojobo: As much as it irritates me to keep it up... it was special to someone who was special to me, so I do it to honor their memory and their love.

Amaya giggles
Amaya: That's oddly sentimental, onii-san. It must have been a very special someone.

the tengu pats the girl on the head
Sojobo: That's right. It was.

Amaya: ...how about I take care of it then? It's not too much to add on my list of duties.

Sojobo smiled gently
Sojobo: Somehow I knew you would say that.

And so for a year and a half Amaya took care of the humble memorial all the while wondering who it was for and for whom that the great tengu took care of it for. Over time her curiosity grew and grew until one day a stranger came to the mountain. An old woman with a most mysterious twinkle in her eyes boldly approached the throne of the tengu king to steal the gem away.

Old Seeker: You know this day would come, my lord. Such a beautiful bird must not be kept locked in your feathered cage forever.

Sojobo: I knew, but wished to delay it as long as I could. ...I have no regrets.
He sends one of the guards to fetch Amaya.
Sojobo: It is time once again to bid farewell to that child.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amaya wipes way her tears as she leaves the mountain with the old Seeker.
Amaya: Onii-san seemed oddly... sad.

Old Seeker: Ah, the old sentimental coot will just seal off the mountain for a few hundred years as he pouts. Nothing we haven't seen before. But for you, my girl, the time has come to look ever forward. I think the seeker's life will suit you quite well.

Amaya: What's a Seeker?

Old Seeker: The most noble and tragic of all professions. The basic principal is this- A seeker seeks one treasure that is almost entirely unattainable and impossible to be found in the normal ways. This is our guiding "star". We can never be sure what form it will take because we can only see it's shine off in the distance. But! In pursuit of this star our eyesight and our wits become sharper than your average fool on a quest. It is because of this that others seek us out to find their lost treasures.

Amaya: I see, so then what is it that I am to be seeking?

Old Seeker: That I wouldn't know, but I suspect that it's something that has been in your heart for a long time or else the old bird would have refused to let you go.

Amaya: And then, what are you looking for?

Old Seeker: A successor.

Lib’s FlashBack: First Breath

Lib~The first thing I remember is a single sound, a single word. “Mu” I don’t know whose memory it is, it certainly isn’t mine. A single image, a single scene; This word “Mu” whispers to me in my mind over and over, and with it comes a single memory. A pool of cool water, clean and crisp, oh glorious water. The source of life. A single moon, its subtle and beautiful light like a veil over silver rocks that mirror its crescent shape. The pool ripples and a woman breaks through the surface, her hair long and dark, her skin pale as the light around her. A single breath, and the memory ends

Rebel Commander Zones: Now that is a memory I can drink to. A woman in nothing but a memory. Mmm hmm.

Rebel Subordinate Ta’jir: But sir! This one could be an empire spy! A secret weapon of some kind!

Zones: Calm down, that’s why we’re having this interrogation. Now you just stand there with that stunner rod and make sure that our new friend here doesn’t hurt himself or herself. Say are you a man or what?

Or what was right. The being they had just fished out of a swamp lacked any characteristics that could help determine as particular persuasion of any gender. Tall and slender, it was, with bluish colored skin and red/brown eyes. The eyes had sort of an innocent look about them like a lost child. The being’s face also looked a little yellow around the edges, but that could be the result of having coughed up several units of swamp water. The rebel commander had pretty good instincts (for a human), and his hunch was that this….thing… was no more harmful then a rabbit. It was his alien subordinates and comrades that would need to be convinced.

-----------------------------
Zones: Well, Mr. Amnesiac, we can’t let you go all nameless on us. Hmmm, I got it. Liber Té René.

Lib: …Okay… what’s it mean?
--Lib had somewhat recovered from nearly drowning in a saltwater swam and now followed the commander around like a lost puppy--

Zones: In a very old language once spoken by my forefathers you could say it means “Freedom Reborn”. “Reborn” could be your nick name.

Lib: Yes, sir. Um… hey…. Could you possibly just call me “Lib”?

---------------------------------

Rebel Subordinate Marks: Whoa…. Now that is something you don’t see everyday.

Zones: A little more to the left Lib!

Lib: Yes sir!
Lib hoisted the logs that would become the foundation of the rebel’s mobile base and set them down with expert precision and control. The camp applauded when the stack hit the ground with a thud.
Lib: gasp…That’s not good…. It’s barely five hundred ugh….and I’m already winded…. Dang, my chest hurts-

Zones: Hey! Lib!
The commander ran over to were Lib had collapsed. Lib was doubled over in pain and clawing at the left side of its chest.
Zones: Get a medic over here!

Lib clutched the commander’s his sleeve
Lib: N-no… d-doc-doctors…..
Looks up at the commander pleadingly

But Comander Zones was having none of that. He threw his subordinate over his shoulder and shouted orders for those who weren’t medical team to get back to work and those with eyes to look for potential weak spots in their new home site. As to Lib’s protests-

Zones: Geeze, kid, you’re heavier then you look for a bag of bones. Are they made of metal or something?

Lib: I don’t need a doctor, just put me down.

Zones: Not until I have a specialist take a look at you. It’s partly my fault making you push yourself so soon after a near death experience.

----------------------------------------

The alien medic looked over Lib quizzically

Medic: I’ve never seen this kind of creature before. I can’t begin to guess what the problem could be.

Lib: Does he have to be touching me? I’m not a fan of slime.
Lib scooted away from the squid-like alien

Zones: Shut up or I put you out of your misery now. He’s the best doctor we’ve got and he’s as chatty as a clam. Whatever secrets your biology is hiding, it's safe here.

The medic looks at Zones in amusement
Medic: why so interested in this alien? Do you not have others that are far stronger, faster, and a greater asset to the revolution?

Zones: I got a hunch here our friend is special.

Lib’s vision blurred and making the unwilling patent nearly fall off the examination table-….er…log.

Medic: That is if he lives long enough to make himself useful.

Lib: What’s wrong with me?!

Lib: ………..poison.

Zones: What?

Lib: ….. A foreign object….
--Lib’s eyes closed and thoughts began trailing, seeking searching for what was now killing the body--
Lib: Two of them. …… One passed through…. Here.
--Lib rubbed his/er head and pointed to a small scar--
Lib: And here.
--Lib put his/er palm on his/er chest over the left lung.
Lib: I think it’s still…
Lib falls over before finishing and Zones catches him/her/it.
Zones: Great. He’s fainted.

Medic: If the others were like him, my job would be easier. Let’s get an X-Ray in here! Prep this one for emergency surgery! Now!
---------------------------------------------------------

Zones: We thought we lost you there for a minute kid.
--the commander set a vial down next to the cot were Lib was resting. Inside was a round smashed object made of led--

Lib: You said no man get’s left behind, commander. Your orders were absolute.

Zones: Touching sentiment, that’s me. This little incident has proven one thing, though. Whoever you are, you don’t work for the empire. Now the question is, what barbaric planet still uses lead bullets?

Lib: If it’s all the same to you, sir, I’d rather not think about how I got shot right now. I’m just glad the first round only shaved off my memory, and left my other functions as they were.

Zones: I admire a man who can leave the past in the past. You’re little fight for life shaved some years of the rest of the crew, too. Even the ol’ Ta’jir was asking about you. Despite hating your guts and all. Well you rest up Mr. Reborn. You’ve escaped death twice now, I’m hoping the luck will rub off on the rest of us.

Lib: What are you saying sir?

Zones: Welcome to the Rebel Alliance, Lib. You’re one of the family now.

Lib: yes sir!
--and commander and subordinate shook hands on it--

Ankita's Flash Back:

Ankita: A flash back? You must be joking, or have you already forgotten that I'm not exactly "all there"? I have no memories you know. ... Ah, I see. You knew I lying then. hahaha! That's right, I am a liar aren't I? Well it's just so hard to break old habits I suppose. Well, It's true that some of my memories are (how should we say....) "scrambled" to say the least, but I will try to put the pieces together for you.

As I was saying, my particular mental condition is most unusual and extremely hard to duplicate without the use of a blender. And now for the story, the middle's a little fuzzy, I wasn't "myself" for a very long time. Simply a puppet dancing on strings with a cute little mask. Dressed stunningly like the white knight when inside I was the black. Oh funny fate, you fickle thing, a puppet is only free when the strings are cut and the little toy wooden doll falls to the table with a clatter and it never moves again.

The first string was forged at my birth. In the deepest depths of the highest mountains that is only reachable after passing through a maze of ice caves and caverns lays a valley mistake for paradise. It was a prison where demons and men lived side by side and fought each other for the rights of the land. Eventually man won the conflict and eradicated their rivals, but without demons to fight the men soon became demons themselves. I was no exception. I burned the valley to the ground with my own hands just as the elders had predicted. I had no choice, I am a puppet on a string.

The second string was forged after I left the valley and joined a band of all female mercenaries. I never smiled and I never cried, but still they shared their journey with me. We nearly died more times than I could count in that bucket of bolts we used as transport. I was comforted. Here I was with people with more tragic pasts than me. But I am fate’s puppet, her puppet on a string. I wanted so badly to be their friend, but now I stand alone the only survivor trying to see where they had gone not realizing that what I’m looking for is now buried under my feet.

The third string was forged after I abandoned my name. I blamed my name, a thing that has no power and a thing that can’t defend itself, for all my troubles. An army is recruiting. I don’t know what they are fighting for and I don’t really care. This is a chance for me to start again. These people are fun and they are kind. I have found a taste of happiness here. These are my friends…..But I am a puppet on a string.

The forth string was made when I accepted an invitation. Do I regret that now? I cannot say. It taught me much about myself. It showed me the strings that were tied to my arms and I watched new ones form so quickly it was blinding- The fifth, the sixth, the seventh and the eighth all forged in this time, but I don’t remember how. I wanted it to end. I wanted to be free.

The ninth string was forged when I betrayed my friends. I laughed with such glee at their sorrow and tears. “I’m sorry,” They said. “I’m sorry we couldn’t save you.” Don’t make me laugh! I don’t need saving. I’m saving myself! I’ll cut all the strings and soon we’ll all be free! But that was not to be so….because I am fate’s puppet. Her dancing puppet on a string, but I am not the only one tied to her nimble little fingers.

Another string…another….string…. My body was destroyed, but not the strings. Even now when my form is an illusion based on the memories of my “friends” I am a puppet on a sting. Someday I swear I’ll cut these dratted strings and fall to the table unmoving and while I am frozen and staring up into nothing I’ll watch my fellow puppets dance upon their invisible strings.

Ankita: Well, I’m sure you’ve guessed who I am by now. It’s alright, you can say it. I already told you, I lied when I said the name was cursed. …Or you can use my other one if you prefer…So now that you know my “true” face, are you still so determined to “save” me now? ….yes, of course you’d say that….after all you are just a puppet…fate’s little puppet on a string.

Rann: Is that such a bad thing?

Ankita: Ah, so you've finally woken up. I thought the shock of having your eye removed would have made you want to sleep forever.

Rann: Humans are surprisingly...strong. What does the other one say?

Ankita: I shall ask her... it's seems a bit odd now to ask myself something and to hear a reply.

Rann: Don't worry, I suspect the three of us will be reunited into a single personality again soon. The shock of "death" was just a little much for one of us to handle alone, was all.

Ankita: A child, a priestess, and a yankee... what an odd way to divide myself.

Rann: Ah, but you will grow up soon Kit-chan. Once you do, you'll be able to handle things for yourself without me, Spirituality, and her, Self-destruction/preservation, to decide for you.

Ankita: Mental silence is golden.

The Two Ranns:

A long, long time ago in a place lost and untouched by our own was a secret valley hidden within the deepest depths of the highest mountains. A mythical valley called, “Shangri La”. In the beginning the humans and the yokai, the daemons, lived in harmony and peace. The world was paradise. Then one day the tides of fate changed and the two tribes that had once been so close split into a war that seemed to turn all the rivers of the world red with blood. In an attempt to push back the sweltering storms of battle and hate, the yokai fled to the hidden valley where they lived in peace once more for a hundred years. Such a short time in the grand scheme of things, but it could not be helped. The demon hunter clans that were once the “saviors” of mankind too were pushed back no longer need nor wanted by their fellow man. Their great beasts were seen as burdens and the humans who tamed them were strangers, they were “others” in the eyes of the townspeople, the farmers, and the common folk and kings. Thus the two adversaries met once again in the valley hidden behind a maze of ice and unseen by the world. The humans were lead by the noble lady Kara Liffey Ruarc and the yokai by the mighty Draighean Sheelin Rann. The battle ended when only Sheelin Rann stood alone as the last of her kind.

Sheelin Rann: So, you are Kara Loanna’s brat. The one that is suppose to “purify” my disgraced name. I’ve heard a lot of unpleasant things about you. They say that you’re going to destroy the world. That’s definitely something I’d pay money to see.

--Little Kit looked up at the imprisoned yokai chained to the stone walls with only a few drops of spring water and bread provided by the monks to sustain her life. The in her prime woman was utterly enchanting in an unearthly way. Her hair looked like fire when it danced free on the winds of the battle field, but in the damp cave prison it wilted to a sullied brown and blue eyes turned black as the ocean‘s floor. An ocean that Rann Kailee Thorn had never seen see now and she was nervous.--

Little Kit: I’m only here to get the holy water.

Sheelin Rann: Another bright young spark of the beast tamer clans stepping up to the challenge of immortality. It might be your turn too someday Miss Rann Kailee.

--As was customary with her people Kit had been given three names, but only two were known publicly. Her third name would be kept a secret so her full name could never be used against her. It was a silly superstition, but all obeyed the rule. If a wicked spirit caught wind of your full name, it was said that the spirit could control you. It was rumored that such a method was how Kara Ruarc had defeated the unstoppable Draighean Sheelin Rann. The only time a full name was revealed was when it was carved into a tombstone. --

Little Kit: I don’t want to grow up or get married or anything. I’ll join the temple and cut my hair.

Sheelin Rann: Aw what a pity, but it can’t be helped. Those lavish scarlet locks must be seen as quite the curse, unlucky even. Although is was fairly common among my people. Especially half-breeds.

Little Kit: ….

Sheelin Rann: So serious. How boring. I suppose I’ll just have to play a guessing game to pass the time.

Little Kit: I don’t know what kind of future you were hoping for… but I don’t think great-grandmother would have named me after someone she hated and had no respect for.

--with that she gathered up her bucket and left the yokai alone in the dark.--

--A smile came to the yokai’s lips--
Sheelin Rann: If they world had been the way it should, little Rann, then you would have been happier with a dashing blade at your side following around like a love sick puppy. Although not as skilled as your mother, your skills as a tamer… well there aren’t anymore yokai to be tamed so I guess it doesn’t matter.

--softly the yokai whispered--
Sheelin Rann: Rann Kailee Aoi? No, Rann Kailee Mureen? No…. this could take a while, but then I have all the time in the world. Rann Kailee Loric? I’m almost positive that it’s a third name. "Rann" is almost never used as a middle name. Maybe if I went in alphabetical order? Rann Kailee Arleen? ….no…..

And thus the years dragged onward until the fated day when all predictions came to pass.

The Two Ranns: Part two

--The valley burned until all that stood was the the stone temple that housed the histories of the world. The keepers of the knowlege felt for the first time fear as the blood covered figure crept closer to where they cornered by flames and stone.--

Sheelin Rann: Rann Kailee Thorn, stop!

--the tiny offender froze at the sound of her loathsome name. The keepers glared at the escaped demon in furry--

Head Keeper: You! Witch! We should have known you were behind this.

Sheelin Rann: Oh you're not gonna blame this one on me.
--crosses her arms--
Sheelin Rann: Your superstitions are adorable, but they have no basis in truth. Does one really need a reason to go postal?
--Sheelin Rann caught the younger girl's kick and sent the girl sprawling into a stone pillar--
Sheelin Rann: Perhaps it was the death of her teacher.
--dodged the stone that was aimed at her--
Sheelin Rann: Perhaps it was just the torment of living under your clans' rules. Either way-
--Once again the demon blocked the girl's assult and sent her into a stone wall--
Sheelin Rann: I lost to you lot fair and square so I endured my imprisonment. Now I'll enjoy this moment where I can save your sorry hides from a beast from your own brood.
--When the girl picked herself back up Sheelin Rann quickly used her claws and blinded the girl in one eye so she wouldn’t lose her advantage--

Sheelin Rann: Ob’hega!
--Sheelin Rann called out and summoned her trusted blade to her side--
Sheelin Rann: Lets show this copy cat what the original can do. Ha!
--Using centuries of practice Sheelin Rann cut down the girl in a single blow to the stomach. A surely fatal wound. or at least it should have been.--

--Sheelin Rann tried to remove the enchanted sword but found it stuck fast. In fact, the tiny girl was pulling the sword into her own body.--

Sheelin Rann: Im-impossible! She tamed my sword?!

--The keepers were falling fast due to the smoke. The leader witnessed the exchange with a smile on his face.-
Keeper: W-we’ve done it… the perfect tamer…
--falls--

Sheelin Rann: Too bad you weren’t around long enough to celebrate, urg!
--Sheelin Rann desperately tried to take back her sword, but it was too late. Rann Kailee had claimed mastery over the weapon as her own.--
Sheelin Rann: Fine! If you want it that badly you can have it, but you’ve gotta take the whole package. If you want the sword-
--She reached up to her own eye--
Sheelin Rann: If you want to live, you must also absorb part of my soul.

--Three days later a single figure, with one brown eye and one blue eye, left the valley of ash alone.--

Flash forward: Kit's Step-Daughter

Where are you going?

Jaymee Long turned to her college and smiled secretively. I’m going to go visit my step-mother.

Jaymee’s real surname was unknown. She had forgotten it some time ago when she was adopted by the one she now calls “dad”. A big old guy who was sure to make a splash every time he came to visit the gifted girl with strawberry colored hair. Legend said that ages ago a young maiden did a dragon’s kin a favor and thus was promised their friendship forever more, but over the years the dragons grew bigger as the world grew smaller. Those gifted maidens who could call up the dragons from the sea were shunned for their powers because every time that it happened a city sank beneath the waves. As such the dragon lord, called a “Long”, adopted the last of the summoning maidens and her grand adventures began.

Several years later Jaymee took a small boat to the center of the sea on a ship in the middle of a terrible storm, the only place she could “safely” meet her adopted father. It was there that he bestowed upon her the joyous news. The noble dragon had wed a beautiful young bride meaning Jaymee had a new step-mother. Jaymee was naturally shocked by this news; first of all it was not a fellow dragon that her adopted parent had wed, but an unearthly being from another world entirely. Secondly, the lovely lady in question dwelled in a special dimension called the Sun Realm, a place unreachable by mortals, gods, guardians, Basts, and even dragons. Still, once does not argue with a creature over 381 meters tall.

Jaymee’s college nodded not quite understanding, but they did not question the girl. Jaymee was by far the most talented of the corps (a group of freelance soldiers for justice that could be assembled or disassembled at any time depending on the need) and well respected by her colleges. Jaymee’s success was greatly due to her mentor’s wisdom.

The Sun Realm was in essence unreachable by mortals, even its name was a symbol of that. Just like a sun is so hot and potent with energy that it can’t be reached without special aid. However, there is a rather poetic means of communicating with the beings that dwell there. Like the sun reflects in all things on an earth, you can stand in a perfectly still pool of water and like a mirror you can touch the sun’s reflection. Jaymee did something similar to that effect and found herself in an imperfect copy of the one and only Sun Realm.

She glanced around at the scene around her and like always it took her breath away. The beautiful mountains, the golden and colored buildings and structures that were both nostalgic and exotic at the same time, the flowers and trees that were placed by the most tender hands of their gardener and nurtured by the elements, everything was stunning beyond words, but at the same time it was so warm and inviting like she wasn’t a stranger at all. However, she was still an outsider. Jaymee couldn’t see a single soul in the vast painting the spread out before her, nor would she unless the beings wanted her to see them. Even then it would only be for the briefest moment of them imparting the smallest tidbit of wisdom. Like in a haunted space and she was surrounded the recorded memories of ghosts or more accurately she was a fish in a fishbowl and the Sun Realm inhabitants had to stick a finger in her little fishbowl’s time stream in order for her to see or hear them.

Only one such being ventured their image down into the bubble to appear before Jaymee, a tiny figure in pure white robes appear before her and removed her hood to reveal a pale faced woman with scarlet hair and soft brown eyes.

Let’s begin. The woman said with an inviting smile.

<><><><><>

Jaymee stared down her “opponent” with intense concentration. A large golden bowl rested gently on the head of a jade frog statue on the edge of a pond.

Calm you mind. The white-robed spirit told her. Fill the bowl. Then take of a sip of the sweet water you have gathered and take its wisdom with you.

Once the spirit had relayed the instructions of the task she vanished as always. Jaymee had done several tests like this and enjoyed the purifying effects. Her step-mother couldn’t return to the mortal plain, but she could give the lessons and feeling to Jaymee. Once Jaymee shined with the magic she had been taught others would hopefully see the light and strive to achieve it themselves thus leading to a universal peace. It would take a long time… but it was not impossible, much like the task now siting before her.
As instructed Jaymee closed her eyes and concentrated on her breathing. This was a “blue” test, meaning she had to use the still magic forces which required that she lower her energy state. There had been other “red” tasks were she had to raise her energy. It was this cycle of high and low energy, push and pull that moved the mechanisms within her that fueled her magic.

As her energy lowered the world around her responded and dark clouds began to form and a gentle rain began to fall. As she took deeper breaths the rain began to fall faster until the skies opened up into a shower. Jaymee opened her eyes and watch the golden bowl fill with rain water. In response to her success the spirits voices could be heard on the winds singing a gentle song to complement the rain. When the shower had ended Jaymee put the golden bowl to her lips and drank.

No words of gratitude were needed. It was a mutual understanding that if spoken would sound something like, “How much do I owe you for this wisdom and lesson in life and peace?” the reply would simply be, “All the treasures of the world could never be enough. I won't take less than your love.” This was the understanding of the Sun Realm. It gave lessons freely, lessons that cannot be expressed or taught by words just like a star shining freely expecting nothing from the planets that bathe in its constant warmth.

Flash forward: Jaymee Long

~After the collapse of the empire the remaining united planets enjoyed an uneasy peace as the pendulum of power swayed left and right. Right at the center was the planet of Detranius. The universal law of Detranius was that each of its citizens had to wear special masks/body suits called “Personates” that eliminated the pesky differences between people thus ending discrimination and civil conflict. Each infant Detrite was scanned at birth do determine their future occupation, likes, dislikes, skills, and even whom they would possibly marry future. All reservations aside, this system has sustained the people of Detranius for over two hundred years.~

Jaymee Long took a moment to steady her breathing. Considering her job, she was use to wearing masks on some of the harsher worlds in the united planet stream, but the “guest” personate the custom officials gave her still took some getting used to. To the Detraites showing any skin was seen as provocative, perverted, and taboo. Next to her stood a native of Detranius and fellow member of the corps.

Are you uncomfortable? Jaymee’s companion asked politely.

No, Jaymee knelt on the building that they were using for their surveillance and adjusted the sight controls on her personate for binocular vision. On Treticata the plants produce so many pollen spores that the inhabitants have to wear breathing masks or they suffocate on the spores. Viva La evolution.

That’s right. You busted up several smuggling rings there, didn’t you? Her companion chuckled and Jaymee wondered secretly why someone who thought it profane to even show their face to their lover would work with the other barbarians in the corps. All of whom who had very different ideas on modesty.

Smugglers aside, what’s the word on this terrorist group? Jaymee scanned the festive crowd for anything out of place. It looked like mascaraed, which wasn’t that bad if you thought about it, and beautiful in its own way. Still Jaymee preferred more “primitive” celebrations. It was probably just something in her blood.

Her companion crossed his or her arms, He’ll show. This event is perfect. Honoring the invention of the personates there’s no way he wouldn’t show.

Wait… He? As in one guy? Jaymee’s shock was interrupted by a loud commotion coming from the square. A young man stood out in the crowd as he displayed his bare face proudly. The citizenry cried in horror and covered their eye sensors as authorities aimed their weapons at the rebel. In a flash, however, the stun guns stalled in their hands.

Virus softwear? Jaymee guessed. She wasn’t much for technical jargon. Her specialty was elsewhere on the skills spectrum.

No, a specialized weapon that was in development by the government before it was stolen. her companion explained as they both put on their jump packs. They would have to work fast before the villain made his escape. Alright, let’s see your special negotiation skills.

They jumped off the sky scraper and landed directly in the fray. The native was in charge off holding off the police while Jaymee negotiated a surrender from the rebel. Not an easy task when you can’t show a person your sincerity, but as she was taught Jaymee quieted her innerself and let the magic of the Sun Realm flow through her.

You’re one man standing up for a cause. Do you really want to spend your life alone? Jaymee asked. She had studied marginalized groups, but in this case it was a single man against an ideology. By definition he was a nut. The young man looked at her with a carefree expression.

I just like my freedom. The rebel said. It was pointless to ask why he didn’t just leave the planet. You couldn’t just ask somebody to just up and move, especially to another world entirely. He was a citizen too, crazy or not, and Detranius was his world too. Suddenly he pulled something out of his jacket setting everyone on high alert.

Stop! Jaymee warned and drew her weapon, a local weapon as required by law to reduce the contamination of her presence. Still it was pointless. Before she or any of the officers could fire their weapons were stalled.

The young man looked at them with a serious expression. This was also something my great-grandfather designed and I completed. A counter measure to the personates. My great-grandfather said, “Peace is great, but if it’s falsely earned then it’s not peace at all. Just a delusion. “ He raised the weapon. If we can’t accept the differences we were born with then we have no right just to cover them up.

Oh, Luck be a Lady! Jaymee tried once more to stop the young man, but her own loaned personate got in the way and in an instant everything went white.

When their vision cleared everyone on Detranius was unmasked. The shrieked at one, in shock at seeing their own faces and having their own faces being seen. Jaymee cuffed the little outlaw and discreetly carried him off to safety. Her partner now unmasked, Jaymee saw that her fellow corps member was in fact a woman. She shook her head and smacked the rebel before taking away his device.

To think that our historical hero who created the personates also designed such an indecent thing. It’ll take us months to fix this! Meanwhile everyone will be walking around exposed. There’ll be panic in the streets.

Jaymee could imagine the disgruntled cries as people were seeing themselves and others for the first time. Several wait, you’re my husband/wife?! scenarios crossed her mind.

Mission failure Jaymee sighed although not entirely disappointed. As far as terrorism goes, I’m all for non-violent. Do you want me to stick around?

nah Jaymee’s companion punched her lightly on the shoulder. Get your shiny sun-shine aura out of here. We’re not ready for inner peace and eternal happiness just yet. Just hugs and stuffed puppies for now.

Baby steps, just take it in baby steps. Change the behavior and the attitude will follow. Jaymee said stating one of the corps’ many mottos.

Yeah, yeah. They had both heard it all before. Jaymee bowed to her fellow corps and then arranged with customs to send her back to base. On the ship ride home she wondered what would happen if everybody on her own home planet found themselves in the nude and what social repercussion that would bring.

A civilized mind is one that never stops asking questions. Jaymee mused with a smile. And a barbaric mind is one that doesn’t ask enough. Right? Okaa-san?

FlashForward: The Seven Stones- Part one

--What sounded like a faint muttering in the distance caught Jaymee Long’s attention. She tried to move, but her limbs felt heavy making the task more challenging than it should have been.--

Hm? Out cold.” She heard a muffled voice say.

It was then followed by another who replied.“Yeah, she does that every few hours when she’s not on a job. It’s kind of strange really.”

--Jaymee Long cracked open a pale green eye to see two of her more unusual looking comrades staring down at her intently as she lay face up in her personal bunk. After her last fiasco of a mission, the leader of the Peaceful Corps asked her to return to headquarters to await her next assignment. More specialized units would handle the Detranius matter. –

Um…Can I help you?” She looked up at the two fans sleepily.

Why do they do that, I wonder?” Instead of replying to her the recruit looked at his comrade.

Ask ‘can I help you’ when they really mean ‘What the hell are you doing here’?” The other nodded.

Jaymee sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her body while resisting the urge to roll her eyes. “ Good, then you can answer both questions.

--To call the large former cargo ship “headquarters” would actually be in accurate. Only a few notable members of the corps actually lived there, Jaymee and the “leader” included, but the rest of the key members took lodgings elsewhere. It was good work, but being in the corps didn’t always guarantee rent money. Most of members held regular part-time jobs as security details or other odd jobs. Some of the more senior members were able to solicit donations from wealthy clients and then split the fees among their cells. The official leader was determined democratically by all members casting a vote. If the leadership was ever questioned a new vote could be called at any time. ---

The both took a step back and glanced at each other nervously. “Well, Arithica is suffering from a heavy drought.

Jaymee had to think a moment. “That’s the capital city of Tritica, right? How does an ocean planet suffer from drought?

Since it’s impossible for anybody to drown, we were hoping you’d use your special gifts.” The other added. Jaymee’s powers weren’t a secret, but she didn’t advertise them and infamously hated to use them.

Still the recruits had forgotten a small detail, “You mean except me.” Even summoners weren’t immune to the effects of the things they summoned. Jaymee was about to close her eyes to go back to sleep when the duo nudged her again.

Please? We could really use the your help on this one.

--The members of Peaceful Corps usually work either alone or in pairs or on extremely rare occasions a senior member would lead a small cell on a mission. They gave their aid indiscriminately for the “greater good” as some would call it. However, since the concepts of “good” and “justice” were subjective it was up to each agent to use their best judgment and treat every case individually. Their fellow members could always be consulted if a case. In more serious cases the “Leadership Counsel” could be brought in to make a decision. The counsel itself was made up of senior members of the corps and its founding members. Many planets were still skittish after the being under the thumb of the empire, but order had to be maintained and so what started out as a small group of vigilantes grew into the irregular army of minute men and women and other persuasions that weren’t perfect, but did well enough as neutral parties go and more people joined every year. The two staring down at Jaymee now were in fact fresh recruits hoping to get some pointers from possibly the most notable of the corps. Jaymee was neither a senior nor founding member, but she held a very important role as the spiritual guide to all the members.--

Is it true that you’re volunteering for the outer regions?”

What?! Why? They both looked Jaymee expectantly.

Jaymee scratched her head. “Ummm, you know. Just something to do. That’s the only reason I joined the corps in the first place. Why?

The chief wants you to make a speech before you go.”

Right. Some last parting words of wisdom before I die.” Jaymee got up and straightened out the wrinkles from sleeping in her uniform before heading to the broadcast room.

--The meeting was broadcast live to all members of the corps and each of the key members got to say their piece before Jaymee took the stage. An audible cheer could be heard where ever a corps member had a clear view of a screen. Jaymee cleared her throat.—

Whenever a new member joins us in our cause it sometimes feels like they’re radical in their ideas and the more senior members have to wonder, ‘is this person crazy?’” A chuckle rose up from the scattered audience as she said this. “I know when I first joined they thought I was crazy when I said that if we shape in our ranks into a critical mass of peace makers, then we can profoundly change the galaxy as we know it. As you can see with your own eyes we’ve made excellent progress from the chaos that followed the collapse of the empire to the worlds we know today. It’s still a work in progress, but as your spirit adviser I’d like to remind everyone that there is no way to peace, peace is the way. Please carry the teachings of the way with you as you go. Thank you.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Oh, my.” The white robed figure said as Jaymee levitated a red orb out of its glass container and smoothly down to the gold chalice that fit it perfectly.

Did I just do that?” Jaymee hadn’t been paying attention as she talked, but suddenly she saw that she had completed the task flawlessly. The white robed figure giggled under her gold embroidered hood.

Don’t worry, it only means that you have excellent emotional control.” She cupped Jaymee’s face in her phantom hands. “It saddens me to see us part, but I know you will keep practicing the way. Now go.

Suddenly Jaymee found herself on the edge of a cliff facing suspended bridge with the wooden blanks broken. Whoa!

Don’t worry, sometimes we come across something that looks like a problem when really it’s not. Keep your energy raised.

A phantom force urged Jaymee forward on to the broken bridge. As her heart rate sped up the blanks healed themselves and held strong under Jaymee’s feet. She let the magic flow through her and smiled in relief as she stepped safely on the other side. In her hands was a small red orb.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

She’s alive!” The corps cadet said in relief as Jaymee coughed up water. Once again the summoning had failed to drown her, but this time it came awfully close. She looked up at a ring of relieved faces of the locals. Several meters away rested the huge head of her “father” whom she had called to flood the city of Arithica. The recent drought had caused the lake’s water levels to drop dangerously low which put the locals in danger. There was another reason she had called him as well. She wanted to let her adoptive parent know of her plans to leave the inner planets and venture out into the “wilds” of the galaxy.

How is she? Despite being legally married the dragon god couldn’t see his beautiful bride very often. The Sun Realm was even out of the dragons’ reach. Jaymee secretly wondered how such a marriage would last, but it wasn’t in her nature to question her adopted father’s judgment.

She gave me a stone and said that there were six others like it in every color,” Jaymee replied. She had ventured to the Sun Realm’s reflection several times now to receive her step-mother’s teachings and learn magic. “I think she misses you, but the magical arts keep her busy enough that she isn’t troubled. She told me some more stories of her past too.

Had he been human the dragon god would have raised an eye brow. Instead he continued soaring along giving Jaymee a ride back to a transport ship. Once she left he would return to his own realm too. Judging by his reaction Jaymee guessed he knew all about her step-mother’s past. Well, they were married after all.

How did you two meet anyway?” She asked curiously. Her step-mother had confessed that she was a mercenary back in the day before becoming an agent to death itself. It was only many years later that she freed herself from the Basts, a group of ultra-powerful beings that tried overcoming the chaos of life and existence. She eventually “defeated” them by stepping out of their reach and thus ended their grand delusion of being the most powerful forces in all existence. Well, almost. A few egos remained too large to be convinced, but they quietly retreated none the less. Since those days she has worked tirelessly for peace.

When I met her she was like a gem. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that good men are forged like a steel blade. The dragon explained. Jaymee nodded having heard the “steel blade” meaning the “katana” metaphor many times before. Just like a katana if forged from a mixture of iron to be strong and flexible by being heated in a hot flame and pounded by a hammer, the belief that a strong man/warrior was made through harsh training (represented by the intense fire), experience (the pounding of a hammer), and a well-rounded background (the mixing of metals. The Dragon explained, Like a sword a gem is forged by intense heat and pressure. This purifies it making the flaws not only smaller, but beautiful. She was a woman without fears or regrets free-falling in the tapestry of the heavens. The dragon grinned. It just so happens I was the one to catch her.

Right.” Jaymee’s tone signaled that she was done with romantic stories. She looked down at the red gem in her hands. This gem represents ‘Thought’. A powerful tool. You must use it well. I trust you'll be able to find them all before the Basts.
Only six more to go.” She said quietly. “I wonder what happens when you get them all?

--Her next stop was a planet with no name. Hidden and protected for the precious memories
