Mariah Campbell

Mariah walked down the cracked dirt path to Professor Pine's lab nervously, clutching Damien to her chest. Plants were wilting in the sun, and what looked like a creekbed nearby was parched and dry. Damien twitched, feeling her unease. Mariah wasn't used to people talking to her, much less seeking someone out to ask for something.

Still, this part of Autumn Port was peaceful, quiet. It was away from the main city, a small dirt path about a mile away from main street. A trek, but worth it for Damien to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. So many emotions had given him terrible migraines, but it was serene and peaceful here. Damien sensed a few Pokemon emotions, but they disappeared as quickly as they came, since Mariah had to go crashing through the woods.

He wished he could communicate with his coordinator, but he couldn't use any telepathy yet, and even if he could, it wasn't likely that anything he could say would calm her jitters or keep her quiet. She liked to talk to herself, too. Mumbling to herself, she tried out saying different way to ask Professor Pine for supplies without sounding needy or greedy. Or maybe she was talking to Damien, but he wasn't really paying her any mine.

Her own nervousness invaded his mind, and coupled with his own anxieties and the terrible summer heat wave, was enough to keep anyone from listening to the ramblings of a human. As the brick building came into view, Mariah's heartbeat sped up and her anxiety deepened. Damien's head began to pound, and so he did the only thing he could think of to do. He slipped out of her cling arms and slid down to her ribcage, and dug his fingers into her side.

Mariah writhed and squirmed as Damien tickled her, and in seconds her mood improved. She chortled and giggled, snorted and laughed out loud. Her laugh was quite a spectacle, and any Pokemon in the woods would have been scared off by the obnoxious sound. When Damien felt that she would stop worrying, he dropped down to the ground, and Mariah wheezed as she tried to catch her breath.

She exhaled, then looked down at her little Ralts. "I guess I was a little too worried, huh?" Damien nodded in reply, and they set off the rest of the way towards the lab in the sweltering heat. When they reached the small building, Mariah stepped under the porch to get into the shade before knocking. Hopefully the Professor had air conditioning, because the temperature with the heat index had to be between 115 and 120. Perfect for a Torkoal, but not a coordinator and her Ralts.

She hadn't heard much about Professor Pine yet, but she hadn't been in Tokai too long, either. She had heard that Professor Pine was a man, albeit much younger than Professor Oak. She had also heard that there was a second Pokemon Professor in Tokai, too. She didn't know if it was true, but she had heard rumors of a female Professor in a big city to the south. Seedrail? Something like that, she wasn't too concerned with it yet.

(WC: 537)

(Seedrail? Lmao)

Seconds turned to minutes as you anxiously waited for the Professor to answer the door. Maybe he wasn't home? Or maybe he melted in this extreme heat. That would suck, wouldn't it? A person melting because it was so hot? Anyway, back on topic. It didn't seem like he was going to answer. Well, until the very last second. He flung the door open and looked down at you with forest green eyes.

"Hello," he panted. His long hair was a sweaty mess. If it wasn't so knotted up, it would probably reach his shoulders, but as of now it was hardly passed his ears. He wasn't wearing a traditional lab coat. Instead he was wearing a white wife-beater and shorts that came down to just above his kneecaps. Oddly, he wore no shoes whatsoever.

He looked you over, noticing that he wasn't the only one dying of heat then waved you in as he turned to walk back inside. His lab was neat and tidy. Everything seemed to be in it's rightful place and there seemed to be no dirt or dust anywhere. On his desk, which was across the room, sat a medium sized Swablu, which was busy fluffing out her feathers.

Upon noticing Pine walk into the room, the Swablu cried out happily then flew up to him. She landed on his head and started to flap her wings. It was an odd sight, but the wind coming from Swablu's wings looked very refreshing.

"I don't have any AC, and Swablu just started doing this out of no where," laughed professor Pine. After sighing happily he looked you over once more. "So, you're a new trainer, yeah? Your Ralts doesn't look very trained, but he sure has promise," Pine crossed his arms and nodded matter-of-factly. "What's your favorite color, kiddo?"

(Maybe she's bad with names? XD)

A film of sweat appeared on Mariah's brow, and every so often she wiped it away with her arm. After minutes of waiting, she finally looked down at Damien. "Is he home?" she asked, and her Ralts nodded, being able to sense two presences inside the brick building: happy and hot. And so Mariah kept waiting, and after a bit of clomping around inside, a young man came to the door.

Mariah instantly recoiled, but the man was kind faced with a pleasant lilt to his voice. Maybe it was an Autumn Port accent.. He panted out a greeting, and she managed to squeak out a small "Hello." without fainting. Damien tugged on her jean leg to remind her to stay calm, and she took a deep breath as she followed him into the lab.

She wondered vaguely if he was the professor, but no, he couldn't be. He wasn't dressed properly. Granted, those lab coats couldn't be comfortable in this heat.. The lab was tiny, and had a small area off to the side for a living space. It probably a bed and a kitchenette, but Mariah didn't get a very long glimpse.

What she could see of Professor Pine's lab was notoriously neat, something she hadn't heard. Maybe the man was a germaphob, or had OCD.. She caught sight of the beautiful blue Swablu across the room, and she gave an "Oh!" of appreciation. She admired its fluffy white wings, especially when the Pokemon began to beat them, sending a cool rush of air to ruffle her hair.

"Wow." she was impressed by how much the Swablu trusted Professor Pine. In her head, she noted that it was very nice for the Swablu to do that, but she couldn't get the words to come out. Damien puffed out his chest at the compliment. "His name is Damien." she informed the Professor, not rudely, but timidly. She felt more at ease with Pine than she had with anyone ever before.

"Um.." she said, trying to think of an answer to his question. "Something bright and cheery. No grey or purple. Or black." She tried to suppress a shudder as memories of her mother's horrific Pokemon invaded her peace of mind. Damien hugged her leg, feeling her fear, reminding her there was nothing to be afraid of. She had confided everything about her life to him in their week or two together, and he was becoming something of an expert about cheering her up.

(WC: 414)

"Hmm.. No dark and depressing," he spun on his heels suddenly, which caused the Swablu to flutter above his head a bit, though she quickly flew back onto his head and got a better grip on his hair.

One bonus of such a tidy lab was that it took the professor less than ten seconds to pull open a drawer and pull out a small brown box with a yellow sticker on it. He slid off the lid of the cardboard box and gingerly set it in a trashcan. It seemed he even liked his trash to be clean. Anyway. He walked back up to you and held out the box at an angle so that you could see what was inside of it. Inside laid a dull gold Pokedex and a sort of watch beside it.

"Here's your Pokedex," he took out the Pokedex and handed it to you. "And this is your very own Live Caster," he held out the watch. Upon closer examination, you could tell that the watch actually had a large screen on it, which was obviously touch screen, considering there were no buttons on it at all. "Oh, and we really can't forget these," he reached into the box and pulled out five empty pokeballs and handed them to you as well.

After neatly throwing away the empty box and making sure you had put away all of your new supplies properly, he backhanded some sweat from his forehead then put on a thought expression. "Kiddo, what would you say to a little battle?" He broke out into a smile. "It'd help us get our minds off this foresaken heat for a few minutes and you'd be able to get a feel of Pokemon battling without worrying about getting mugged," he laughed as if that was something that Never happened. After his laughing subsided, he looked up at his Swablu. "Swablu should be around the same level as Damien, so it'd be a fair fight," he noted.

Pine pulled out a small box with a yellow sticker on it, to mark the color within. When he opened it, Mariah appreciated the pretty gold inside, but couldn't find the words to say so. Beside it lay a Live Caster, and she thought of the cracked, dusty, unused one in her backpack. But maybe, just maybe, this one wouldn't go to waste. Finally, the Professor gave her five small Pokeballs, and she knew she was looking at the residencies of her future team. But first..

She pressed the small button on one of them and it expanded, and then she pressed the button a second time and pointed it down at Damien. He hadn't realized what she had done until he was being molecularly compressed. Mariah set the Pokeball on her palm, her nose inches from it as Damien wiggled and struggled inside. The catching had been so instinctual for Mariah, it was undoubtedly in her blood.. When Damien quit struggling inside of the Pokeball, it emitted a few small shooting stars which flew into Mariah's eye.

Blinking, she pulled the Pokeball away from her face, then pressed the center button once more and angled it towards the floor. When Damien appeared, he went into a rant mode. "Rahl ra rahlll ralts!" Mariah looked to the ground and muttered an apology, but Damien hugged her to show her it was alright, and to try and improve her mood. He really didn't want her to get sad over a simple annoyance of his, and she seemed so fragile... emotionally, anyways.

Pine seemed to ignore this exchange, as if he were used to disagreeing trainers and Pokemon. He then suggested a friendly Pokemon battle between the Swablu on his head and Damien. She glanced down at her partner Pokemon, who nodded eagerly, then up at the Swablu, who beat her wings a few times excitedly. Damien was convinced that winning her first battle would make Mariah happy and confident for the road ahead.

But if she lost.. Damien pushed the though out of his mind. From what he could tell, Swablu, himself, and Mariah were all eager for the upcoming battle, but Mariah didn't convey any of this as she nervously stuttered out a "O-okay." She backed up to the other side of the room, and Damien took his place a few feet in front of her. As Mariah gazed once more around the meticulously clean room, she spoke without being spoken to. "Wait, in here?"

She gave the Professor a dubious look. The place was tidy, but she knew that battle could be destructive, and it would take him ages to clean up his lab after a battle with an inexperienced trainer. He seemed pretty laid back, but that didn't mean he wouldn't be pissed if his home and research got destroyed. On the other hand, it really was much too hot for them to battle outside. If Pine wanted to trash his lab, who was Mariah to stop him?

(WC: 500)

Pine laughed at the girl's expression about battling indoors. "Yes, we'll be fighting here, but not here," he motioned to this room. He slipped his right hand into his pocket then walked up to the wall behind Mariah. He held out his hand, and the wall seemed to scan his hand. After the scanner went over his hand twice, the beam faded and a small control panel popped out from behind the wood. He stared blankly at the pad for a few minutes, as if he forgot the right code, then a look of realization flashed over his face. At this point in time, a light bulb should've flashed over his head, but alas this wasn't an anime. He tapped in a few buttons and he literally just vanished.

A few seconds after he vanished, you sudden found yourself standing on a cliche battle ring. The field was a simple ground one. No grass, trees, rocks, etc. Just ground. Pine stood in his little white box, and you were already standing in yours.

"Because you're new at this, I'll let you have the first move," Pine put both of his hands in his pockets as his Swablu fluttered to the field, hovering just over the ground. With each flap of her fluffy wings, small clouds of dust puffed up under her.

Swablu:
Level: 5
Nature: Lax
Gender: Female
Ability: Cloud Nine
Type: Normal/Flying
Attacks: Peck, Growl, Astonish

"Weird transporter." Mariah commented to herself as the lab disappeared from around them and an arena for battling appeared. Damien could tell that Mariah felt as uneasy as he did. It really didn't feel like they had traveled through time and space in an instant.. so was it all an illusion? These thoughts occupied him as Pine and his Swablu took their places in the arena, as did Mariah. He took a position about ten feet in front of his partner, and turned to face the Swablu.

Pine offered Mariah the first move, to which she squeaked out a "Th-thank you." Although the man was kind, Damien didn't feel as if he were giving them the first move simply because they were new at this. In his mind, the Professor was giving this move because he thought they needed it, because Pine thought he was weak! Damien wasn't going to stand for this, not one little bit. He was going to crush that arrogant Swablu if it sucked out all of his energy.

Mariah, on the other hand, was finally enjoying herself for once. She was eager to start her first battle, and tried to give an encouraging grin to Damien, but he was too busy glowering at the Swablu to pay her any mind. So, for her first move, she went for the tactical advantage. "Use Growl, Damien." Her partner obeyed at once, letting loose a feral, wild Growl that seemed so out of place coming from such a cute, innocent looking creature. But he wasn't called Damien for nothing.

And then, Mariah did something to surprise both herself and Damien. "Now add a Confusion!" she shouted, oblivious to the fact that she was actually talking in front of someone, quite loudly. Damien blinked, noting that it was a little unfair to take the Swablu off guard, but then his eyes began to glow purple as he gazed at the blue and white bird in front of him. Maybe it would even confuse the Swablu.. Wouldn't that be great for Mariah's confidence?

Mariah herself didn't find it a very cheap tactic, since Swablu where know for their high special defense, and Confusion, Damien's only damaging attack, happened to be a special attack. Plus, it was foolish of Pine to think that if he gave her the first move, she wouldn't take as much advantage of it as she could. No, she was timid and depressed, but she had a devious side, much like her mother.

(WC: 416)

"Attacking twice?" Pine grumbled to himself. "Fine, swablu can handle it. Use Astonish to shake 'em up a little," Pine commanded, taking advantage of Ralts's weakness.

Swablu shuddered and looked down away from Ralts. But, the instant Damien had finished his move, he tried to pull a cheap shot and use a Confusion. Swablu fluffed out her feathers and then put on a menacing look and suddenly let out an ear shattering screech that was loud enough to make a rampaging Rhydon stutter.

Damien recoiled as the Swablu preformed its attack without a hitch. Mariah put a hand over her mouth in concern for her Pokemon, but managed to keep her eyes from watering, somehow. She didn't want to see any harm come to Damien, but in battling, it was inevitable. Another reason why contests were much better than battles.. No pain. Granted, some contests had a battle segment, but the greater part of them was showing of your move sets in an impressive way.

Damien glared at the Swablu. How dare it and its trainer take advantage of one of his few weaknesses! Mariah barely had to open her mouth and give the command before his eyes began to glow again, this time a bright blue. Using his psychic energy, he prepared to slam the Swablu into the ground to hurt it.

Mariah's mind wandered back to contests as she watched her Damien complete his attack. He really did seem like he was a natural battler, or maybe the Professor was just planting confident thoughts into her head. Regardless, she could imagine herself dressing up for her first contest and sending Damien out into the center of the arena as the crowd cheered around them.

He might be a natural battler, but she had a gut feeling that he would be an even more extraordinary contest Pokemon. His Confusion attack would be beautiful if they could control the color his eyes flashed.

(WC: 240)

Swablu blinked as she became outlined in a purplish glow and was lifted into the air. She flapped her wings in a desparate attempt to get away from the attack, but she was going nowhere in a quick hurry. She was slammed into the ground by the Confusion attack.

"Wow, that's quite the Confusion attack," Pine stated. "Swablu, use Astonish once more."

Swablu nodded then put on her fierce expression, and without any building up, or warning, she let out an even louder screech as she began to fly towards Damien. Hopefully, the attack would be enough to make him flinch and be unable to attack next turn.

Damien held strong, despite how much the Ghost type move frightened him. He stayed strong for Mariah, knowing that if he flinched, all would be lost. In retaliating, his eyes took on a bright yellow sheen as he attempted another Confusion attack. He didn't need Mariah's orders, and his trainer took that as a sign of bonding between them.

She was going to suggest another Confusion attack anyhow, and she was interested in just how many different colors his eyes could flash. As a coordinator, something like a rainbow flash would look awesome in front of the appeal judges. Mariah couldn't wait for her first contest, even in the middle of her first battle!
