Derby to rename the board room after BC?

Strong rumours abound that Derby county are to rename their boardroom after the great Brian Clough. Brian Clough and his assistant Peter Taylor won the old Division one title in their time at Derby, but were in constant disagreement with Chairman Sam Longson throughout their tenure. Clough had taken Derby from the lower reaches of Division two to the football league championship and the European cup semi finals.
Things came to a head when haulage contractor Longson and his manager fell out over Clough's media profile and the amount of money being spent on the team. Clough who was a TV pundit at the time refused to be told what to do and along with Taylor promptly resigned. The meadia farce that followed was unbelievable, with players threatening to go on strike, fan protests and Clough himself sneaking into the Baseball ground to take an ovation during a live league game. Board members only felt safe at the time in the confines of the Derby boardroom.

The only way out of the situation for the board was to recruit ex player Dave Mackay, then managing rivals Forest to take over the derby job, as the uproar died down Clough and Taylor took a job at lowly Brighton in Division three with Clough continuing to perform his press and TV punditry.

It remains to be seen how far the club down the A52 will go to try to cash in on Clough's managerial success after he left them for Nottingham Forest. Derby County erected a statue of Clough and Taylor in 2010, some thirty seven years after they left Derby, even though the pair were always booed by the baseball ground faithful on their every return to Derby. The statue is positioned outside Pride park, its in a place where the two men have never set foot.

The irony of naming the Derby boardroom after Clough must not be lost, Clough once famously said, "Football hooligans? There's the 92 club chairmen for a start,"
