Snake Catching; One of my hobbies.

One of my favorite hobbies is catching snakes.

I should point out that I do this with my friend who is an Amature snake collector and as such I have very good safe equipment for it. Do not under any circumstances try this without an expert helping you...

Anyway. As I was say one of my hobbies involves catching snakes with my friend who collects them. Many people will automatically think, "Thats a dumb hobby" but in truth it is incredibly fun.

It is exciting and I get to travel quite a bit in my pursuit of strange snakes.

Now I should also point out that only a fool would do this on their own and that I neve go out without my collector friend and vice a versa. We always carry Anti-venom for any snakes we plan to catch and are quite expert at snake bite treatment.

Any way. As I was saying I have travelled quite a bit to catch these snakes going to Darwin for Coastal Taipans, To the forests for Tree snakes etc.

Generally at least once a fortnight my friend and I will go out to look for snakes. We observe them in their habitats and if we find something interesting we will catch it and bring it home to his large aquarium.

He in turn donates the venom from these snakes to varius institutions who are interested in the development of Anti-venom.

I personally have been doing this for since I was 16 and still remember the excitement of catching my first ever snake (a harmless Carpet Snake)

My friend and I also help out our friends when they discover snake nests and such in catching and relocating these creatures.

Anyway I thought I would share one of my stranger hobbies with the people of this board.

Next time I go snake catching I will make a point of taking some photos to show you the Beautiful creatures that snakes truely are.

This is one of my favorite snakes in the world. Common around Sydney.

I think it is a beautiful Creature.

The Red Bellied Black Snake is a dangerous snake species found in Australia. It is a red bellied snake, and black on top, hence the name. It inhabits mainly the east coast of Australia, close to a source of water. They can grow up to 1.5 metres in length. This snake usually gives birth to about 20 live snakes at one time.

The bite of a Red Bellied Black Snake is very dangerous and requires immediate medical attention.

Amazing Fact: The Red Bellied Black Snake can give birth to up to 40 live snakes at one time.

Just wonderin AR, what do you do with the snakes after you've caught them? It's a cool hobby!

My friend collects them actually. He donates venom to various zoos and research facilities around Australia.

That venom is used to create anti-venom.

Also as I said my friend collects them and actually has about 40 different snakes in Aquariums in his house.

Very cool collection. I used to have a carpet snake but I live in the City in a share house now so I don't think I would be allowed to have it anymore.

I love Snakes also we had 2 Corn snakes but one died a few weeks back, the larger Corn although she gets handled can be a little feisty at times and very quick.

However I expect Snake catching, especially in Australia can be dangerous, I caught a few in Africa and dropped 2 over into a shower cubicle a work colleague of mine was using.. (he hates tem) damn he crashed through the cubicle and was sliding all over the tiled wet floor with 2 snakes slithering around him... I nearly died laughing.

I love snakes... I don't think I could cope with one as a pet though...

Its only spiders that make me "peep"

AR, you'll have to come to my place.

My dog has already caught two red-bellied blacks the first one biting her and costing us a fortune in treatment.

They are pretty as long as they keep out of my backyard, they can have the rest of the yard just not inside the fenceline.
