Like i said... i have been through an experience that taught me that revenge is NEVER the key... all it ever did was make my life miserable, and made me hate myself.

I guess it depends on the individual.. I have been through many experiences and revenge is sweet.

GWH you're a dad yourself now. Imagine if someone raped and murdered your child ( God forbid) and there have been cases with children as young as 9 months old having it happened to would you be happy with a jail term for that person?

No, I wouldnt feel happy. But this isnt about what makes one feel good, it's about what's right.

I doubt anything in the world would ever make me happy again...but Im not going to say that the state should kill someone, even in that circumstance, for revenge.

Now, If I were to kill the bastard, that's true revenge.

And let me ask this: If someone hurt my family and I hunt them down and kill them with my own fists...for a crime that would certainly make them eligible for the death penalty...I would be arrested and prosecuted. But they were going to be killed anyway, right? So when I do it, it is murder, and when the state does it, it's...what exactly?

It is state-sanctioned revenge. Nothing more. And it is wrong.

How do you know that they would be killed? By seeking personal revenge, you have circumvented the entire justice procedure. At the end of the day, in your scenario, we have only YOUR word that the person or persons you killed were responsible for the deaths or injuries of your family.

The purpose of the death penalty, and the justice system itself is to provide punishment for those who feel they have the right to operate outside the boundaries of society. It is NOT a deterrent but instead is a reaction to those who violate the moral contracts of society. The death penalty is the ultimate punishment for those who violate the ultimate strictures.

Granted, the legal system, and corrections system BOTH need improvement, it is far better that citizens taking the law into their own hands.

In an ideal world, the legal/punishment systems would be all about equal justice for all, not beter justice for wealthy offenders, and the corrections system would be used for correcting aberrant behaviors.

I agree with XSAS and Mel, I would stand behind seeing a family member put to death if they did such a thing!

I think you were missing my point, Joe. I did not mean to imply that in all instances such as the one I spoke of the violator would be killed. Only that revenge is murder. Except when the state does it...which isn't right.

And what of the few wrongly convicted persons who die? Do we say 'Oh well, the system isn't perfect...to make an omelette you have to break a few eggs"? I think if there is even the remote chance that an innocent person could be convicted and sent to his/her state-sanctioned death, the whole thing must be thrown out.

And I agree with you GWH, see my previous posts on this.

I have mixed feelings on the issue, it isn't cut and dried for me.

But there are those human animals that will either spend their life in a cage, or need to be put down like a mad dog. for the safety of the community at large.

My concern is with those who are wrongly convicted. If one person, wrongly convicted, dies then IMO the system is flawed.
