....pick and choose which parts of the bible to follow?

If I recall correctly, in the NT Jesus claims that "I have not come to change the Law, not one whit....", but Christians only pay lip service to the OT?

I hear many "christians" proclaimly loudy against homosexuals, pre marital sex, and voceiferously claiming that "Only by Jesus are you saved".

Yet, these self same christians, flaunt the other commandments of their holy book.

To whit:

Not eating of unclean animals
working on the Sabbath
Taking their Lords name in vain
worshipping idols

If one accepts that Jesus was Hebrew, and that he came not to change the Laws of Moses, then why aren't Christians Jewish?

Hi Joe,

I think that many belief systems operate in this way - they set out to do something good and then over time they are changed to fit what people want - usually the people in power <_<

Yeah I agree.. I'm not a fan of religion at all. Look at the trouble it's caused.

Because If they were Jewish, they would be jews...they didn't want that back when they decided that Jesus was God and Paul was right.

It's really very interesting...the numerous councils that the early Christian church held to decide what they would believe and the nature of Jesus.

Not all christians pick and choose which parts of the Bible to follow, its that many of them dont want to admit they are wrong...I am a christian and I folllow the Bible to the best of my ability, but I allow myself to know that I disobey God and sin just like everyone else....most of the time when you get people who act like that it is for social class or show....Im not really sure why....I just do what I think is right...

I am Christian as well.....I'd have to agree with Athena. I follow the Bible to the best of my ability and knowledge. None of us are perfect and that's the way I look at any person or religion.

I just do not understand why you should follow any of the bible!
I mean this is text that has been rewritten over and over to suite the church,
Not alone how much of it was left out <_<
Anyway i for one have read the bible and i do not feel their will be a savior,
coming back to save us.

Well, I guess since the Bible, like Silentom said has been edited, even though things were left out and edited I think the stuff that is included in the Bible is true...Since I believe God has a plan for everything, maybe he planned for people to edit and rewrite the Bible, so that we will see and follow certain aspects in order to attain a higher level of thinking, and once we have full faith and understand what we believe we can begin to make assumptions about what we think is right for ourselves, ultimatly equalling religion itself.....Sometimes you have to have faith in something, and I believe in Christianity because of the way I was raised, and I was taught its what was right.... I have full faith in it because its what I know and what I choose....

This is a slippery slope we're on right now.

We have to be careful to guard against blanket statements like "Christians only do this or that..." Grouping all people together is not only unfair, but it can be insensitive and offensive.

That said, all people of ALL religions do not follow their sacred texts (and they all have them) to the letter...because it is impossible to do so. Things like the Quran, the Bible, the Rig Vedas and other rules like the Ten Commandments are written precisely because they cannot be followed. They show people an ideal. They show what mankind *should* be like were we not all so flawed.

Nothing wrong with that.

But what Joe says is true when it pertains to those that would condemn/critisize someone for not following certain passages of scripture when they themselves do not follow all of scripture. The only being that can follow all of the rules of a set religion is it's God (or Gods).

Im an atheist who believes that religion is merely a means for people to do 2 things: Assuage the inherent fear of death; and to explain that which they do not understand. I do, however, understand the need for religion in many peoples' lives...but in moderation<_< .

I think maybe people, like GWH said are making stereotypes of people in certain religions...I believe if you are a true Christian then no matter what people are or do you accept them for who they are even if they do not believ the same thing as you, God tells you to love everyone...Kinda like when people say that homosexuals are going to hell, or the music that people listen to today will send you to hell, I dont believe it.....homosexuals have the right to love whoever they want just as anyone else and music is a material thing that doesnt matter...like my mom says dont sweat the small stuff....in the end no matter how you are, what religion you practice, who you love, what your opinion is or even the things you do, ultimately everyone is a person, and thats what matters...religion is simply for your self, and mine is Christainity just as well as someone else's may be Muslim or atheism....

Don't misunderstand me. I admire people who have faith in their religion. I become concerned and disturbed though, when people try to make others conform to their beliefs. Whether they be Christian, Muslim, Jew, or Atheist.

My origonal post was made in the heat of the moment, after coming off a thread on UM. It seems to me that too many people object to things simply because "the BOOK says so....." and when cornered to give their own reasons why they dislike something, turn to spurious and untruthful arguements to back up their religious views.

Faith can be a comfort to many but when you follow a religion blindly, without thought, then it just becomes itual.

There wasn't any offense taken, I was just stating my personal view...I understand about the heat of the moment thing...things tick me off sometimes and I tend to have an uncontrollable temper(its one of my more shameful faults..)...but i think its great that you speak your mind about what you believe ^_^

Everyone will always have their on belief even if it's a religion it will vary, somewhat between people!
And i do agree that a belief should not be pushed on anyone i jut feel like,
that is just to much.
I went to church when i was younger and i remember the church trying to,
push a belief on me that i was skeptical about from the beginning,
and in the end i just steered away from it all together.
