Artificial life in the near future?

Paper Ship

It was the sweetest note I ever wrote
Hid it in a bottom drawer
Where it stayed for many years
Never meant to see the world

It spoke of love & regret
Of friends I've had & those not met
Of dreams that I would one day catch
Of hope & pain & self-clonflicts

A girl I cared for at thirteen
While love was new, just blossoming
And all the years that came before
Black & blue, my head was sore

Things that I'd seen on T.V.
The news had got me wondering
The daunting task of growing up
For all at times it seems too much

Traveling backwards through the times
Then running forward, crossing lines
Catching up now -- here I come
To get to the start of where I begun

Mom & Dad, 3 brothers, sis
The thought too much to think they'd miss
My "good-bye's" on paper now
Twenty-seven years and I've never gone down

Cause I am not a sinking ship

I am creating artificial life, declares US gene pioneer

Craig Venter, the controversial DNA researcher involved in the race to decipher the human genetic code, has built a synthetic chromosome out of laboratory chemicals and is poised to announce the creation of the first new artificial life form on Earth.

The announcement, which is expected within weeks and could come as early as Monday at the annual meeting of his scientific institute in San Diego, California, will herald a giant leap forward in the development of designer genomes. It is certain to provoke heated debate about the ethics of creating new species and could unlock the door to new energy sources and techniques to combat global warming.

Mr Venter told the Guardian he thought this landmark would be "a very important philosophical step in the history of our species. We are going from reading our genetic code to the ability to write it. That gives us the hypothetical ability to do things never contemplated before".

hmmm...very interesting. Sounds rather boastful, but if it IS true, than I smell a backlash of epic proportions.

Is it wrong to create artificial species? What if it is bacteria that, as the article says, eats carbon dioxide or produces medicinal ingredients?

I'm not sure how I feel about this... I need to ponder on it some more!

I wouldn't necessarly consider artificial life wrong or look down upon it. Just this little thread if its true or not shows the potential of man kinds capablities.

Well Isis I know how you feel about this but its our nature to try create things even if they go against mother nature.

I think it is a spectacular and exciting possibility. If we were to create sentient robots it would be no different. Asimov pondered the ethics in "I, Robot" and Huxley did it in "Brave New World".
