In another thread, a statement was made that cloning animals for food was "unnatural". What, exactly, is unnatural for the human species? Is it "natural" for us to fling our bodies through the stratosphere, flying in air-conditioned comfort at 30,000 feet? Is it "natural" for us to jump into a vehicle and travel 200 miles in a day? Is it "natural" for surgeons to remove organs from one person, and place them into the body of another? How about the garments that we throw upon our bodies. Are they "natural"? Throughout history, people have resisted forward progress, claiming it was either unnatural or against god, or both. Humans are not the fastest, nor the strongest animal on the planet. Neither are we the best swimmers or the most adaptable creature on this planet. However, we have an advantage over all other creatures: we have intelligence and imagination. Imagination to dream of the impossible, and the intelligence to make that dream a reality. We do not adapt to our surroundings, but rather, adapt our surroundings to suit us. This isn't about the use or abuse of technology because ANY tool/device/procedure/innovation can be used positively or negatively. Instead, this is an attempt to explore what people believe to be the 'natural' boundaries of our search for knowledge. Basically I'm asking why people are so resistant to change. |

Where ever you go, there YOU are. Humans are like cut gems: They have many facets. And their many faces are rarely completely known by all. Not Another Moment Lost To Seizures

I'm not resistant to change. I am however reluctant to ingest something that is not labled properly. For instance when someone buys a product for say medicinal purposes the first thing they look at is the label and side effects "After all it's going to be in your body." Can you imagine taking a medicine that counteracts with something else that you are taking? Boom! could be lethal. I don't usually take medication unless it is absolutely necessary. Look at all these older people on 20 different meds a day eeeek. can you imagine what their liver looks like? 2 words "Swiss cheese." I agree with your natural vs. unnatural though. |

Evolution brought the world together as we see it and so everything within it is 'natural'. People often define 'natural' as anything that is not constructed or manufactured by a process, but rather occurs naturally. Well, by that logic a bird's nest is 'unnatural'. Then people say 'anything made by humans is unnatural'. I would disagree. Even the computer I am using right now is made of all-natural things...just refined. I believe that the idea of 'nature' is purely a social construct. |

If we are defining "Natural" think of the world as a whole to begin with. Are we natural? Who defines what is natural and what is not? As we evolve so does the world around us. |
