An Italian surgeon had a heart attack while performing a brain cancer operation but carried on until he had removed the patient's tumour.

''I couldn't leave him at such a delicate moment,'' Naples neurosurgeon Claudio Vitale told La Repubblica about the angina spasm he shrugged off.

''I'm not a hero, I only did my duty,'' said the 59-year-old, who had an operation to clear an artery after he had scrubbed off.

Vitale suffered chest pains while he was halfway through the brain op but refused his team's efforts to persuade him to get emergency treatment, only agreeing to give a blood sample that confirmed he was having a mild heart attack.

Vitale was set to leave hospital Friday and was keen to return to Naples' Cardarelli Hospital.

''I'll have a week off and then I hope they'll let me get back to work,'' he said.

From his hospital bed, Vitale kept up with his patient's progress and was pleased to find out that he is already on the mend.

Now that is dedication.

Thats awesome, dedication really does make him a hero.
It goes to show what true determination can bring great achievement.
I bet his staff were very worried, but relieved.

This surgeon obviously new the seriousness of the operation they were performing and the delicate and crucial state the patient was in. I'm sure they also knew that they were suffering from angina but sometimes "especially in woman" it is hard to determine whether it is indeed a heart attack ...the surgeon did he right thing.

Very dedicated and courageous I would say.

I've known a few surgeons that either cut on me or my family. They were usually confident to the point of arrogance-rather like fighter pilots-but ya' know what? If somebody is going to crack my Dad's chest,I want them to think they are Superman or Wonder Woman. Obviously, Dr. Vitale is dedicated, courageous, and a Top Gun neurocutter! :)

I am sure with you on that, Max. One of my maxims was . . . Don't assign any job to someone who isn't completely confident that he/she can do it. There is a huge difference between unwarranted arrogance, and complete confidence. Often, people confuse the two. As for determining how good a surgeon is, just quitely ask a nurse who has assisted the surgeon. Her response will tell you.
