The bus stop - on a road that buses don't run

IT’S the bus stop to nowhere – which has council officials and bus operators baffled.

This shelter, complete with a seat and advertising boards, was positioned some time ago halfway down Eastboro Way in Nuneaton – but has never served a bus route.

“Why it is there is anyone’s guess,” admitted Chris Burrows, from Warwickshire County Council’s transport planning department.

“In fact, it is quite bizarre, because, as far as I know, we have never authorised the installation of a bus shelter on this road. Perhaps the borough council may be able to shed some light on it.”

But at Nuneaton Town Hall, senior engineer Keith Evans was equally mystified.

He said: “I was not even aware there was a bus shelter on Eastboro Way.

"Somewhere along the line planning permission must have been applied for but I can find no trace in our records.

“All I have been able to find out is that it was put there by JC Decaux, who have a contract from the borough council for shelters, advertising signs and automatic toilets.

“Apparently, it has been cleaned and maintained by JC Decaux ever since.

“Before the shelter was put there, someone must have agreed its location and given permission. Maybe the road was being considered for a bus route. I must admit, it is a bit of a strange one.”

Eastboro Way has never been included on a bus route, despite being a main access road for Nuneaton Town Football Club, Nuneaton Rugby Club, the Heart of England Crematorium and Attleborough Fields Industrial Estate.

The Stagecoach company operates bus services in Nuneaton and a regional spokesman said: “Buses stop at the top of Eastboro Way, near the Acorn pub, and run past the bottom of the road, by the Crow’s Nest.

“But none of our buses actually travel down Eastboro Way and we have no plans to do so at this moment in time.

“I don’t know why this stretch of road should have a bus shelter. We have certainly never requested one.

“Perhaps it just serves as a nice resting point for pedestrians.”

No-one from JC Decaux, which is based in France, was available to comment.
