Power Animals

I've been wondering for awhile now about power animals and I've been studying about them for quite some time, and I've found that it is difficult to really know for sure what your own would be. I mean there are a number of possibilities as to why an animal would be around someone.
1. Spirit guides that can appear to be animals to the person perceiving them, which can mean they are your animal totems, not really your actual power animal.
2. Someone seeing animals metaphysically doesn't mean they are their own animal totems or power animal because there will be other beings around which may not be your spirit guides and what not. In this case if some other people are around you, then it could be possible you are seeing theirs.
3. Many power animals share similar qualities and some similar traits, which can make things harder to tell.
4. Many constant experiences (including dreams) with other animals that can be significant can also make it harder to tell, because power animals are supposed to be a consistent force in an individual's life.
5. Referring to number 4, its also harder when you feel a deep connection with nature and animals with so many constant experiences.
6. Bias and wanting to lean towards a certain animal because of desires to become more. Its not a bad thing, its just what is true may not always be what is wished for.

All the books I've come across and websites clashes with these possibilities, and they don't seem to really be able to give a good explanation to find your own power animal. Aside from personal visions quests people have, its nearly impossible to find out.
Any thoughts about this?

I never heard of the term "power animals", but I can say that I've always felt a close connection to tigers throughout my life. I think their gorgeous creatures and I've always felt drawn to them for some reason or another.

I have had dreams about them as well. Not sure if this ties specifically into your original post, but it's the closest I am able to relate to it. :)

Oh absolutely Azure_Falcon.

Animals are very keen to the spirit world. When my ghosties are acting up around this house I usually am cued by how my dogs react. They tend to bark at walls or just thin air. Sometimes they won't enter a specific room and look fearful. I have no idea what they are sensing but I do think they have a strong sense of feeling paranormal things.

With regards to animals in dreams, each animal represents something, for example an eagle may be strong, independant and honorable; a fox might mean clever or shy and so forth. I truly think that certain animals appear in dreams to help interpret the meaning of what you are dreaming.

I have always thought (this is sort of random) when I meditate, as I get into my deep state, if I see a crow or black bird it is a sign of an incoming "message".

I know there are books out there that outline what each animal means. OH and there are also animal cards that are very pretty as well as informative.

I think certain people are drawn to power animals, just in general. Obviously ones that are connected to animals, moreso than other humans. You know?

I think people have a number of different animal guides. You may have one lead or main animal guide and then several lesser ones. Sometimes the animal will represent something you are lacking and sometimes it represents a strength. Each additional animal guide you have also has their purpose. They are also excellent protectors when you AP.

I don't think it is too hard to figure out which is your main power animal (or animal guide). You do need to do some serious meditating to figure this out. It will come to you. Not right away but eventually you will see what animal is always there with you and for you. And remember, sometimes the animal is not what you may expect. It may be something playing towards your weakness to make you stronger.

I loved this post. Thank you for making it. I hope to hear what other have to say about animal guides or power animals.

Does anyone know what there's is (or are)? I know one of mine is the bald eagle :)

I've always had affinities for wolves, cats of all sorts, and interestingly to me,crows and Ravens.

With cats,it just seems to be a mutual attraction thing. But wolves and crows seem to have a very strong pull.

That's cool Left Field, perhaps the tiger is your power animal, and they are indeed beautiful creatures.

Animals definitely are quite sensitive to the spirit world and the happenings of this earth. That is why I like them so much because they have good instincts.
As for dreams, I understand what you're saying, but the books I've read say that the animals that appear in dreams are often animal totems or power animals, not only just interpretation of the meaning of the dream...And I've had many dreams about a variation of animals.

I do own some books about animal totems and have a deck of animal cards, they have pretty interesting descriptions for each animal.

Hmm, yea, it could be possible.

Its just that from the information I gathered...the way I understand what power animal(s) are, is that one or possibly two power animals describes who the person is, their strengths and weaknesses (abilities and potential), their consciousness, and their purpose. Basically the power animal is a manifestation of an aspect of the person's soul--who they are in this lifetime. And then animal totems are the guides that come in to assist. Maybe I just haven't found mine because I haven't fully developed who I am yet.

Meditation hasn't been quite the emphasis for me, I'll try it, but I'm not very good at clearing my mind.

Hmm, interesting thought there, perhaps the power animal within pushes some buttons to get a response in order for some things to be learned. Touching on the whole higher (or more aware) self.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. What you mentioned has made me realize some significant things to consider. So thank you for that.

I have some questions I've been pondering on, and I'm curious to everyone's thoughts about it...

Say the books were accurate...animal totems/guides are all apart of who you are because they are supposed to teach you something and help you realize all that you are. And all the animals that appear in dreams and experiences mean they are your animal totems.
What if the more animal totems means the more past lives you've had? And every animal totem had been a power animal in a lifetime, and they're just there in this one trying to help you remember what you once learned.

also your power animal isn't going to necessarily be a large animal like the bear, wolf, tiger or what not. Take the weasel family for instance, pound for pound they are one tough little species and very ferocious fighters. In some cultures for instance, frogs are known as healers because they herald the coming of rain or the spring season which then causes the earth to heal from winter and turn everything nice and green. I think people often think of power animals as what we think of in terms of strength. Of course, the large cats, and other predatory animals we automatically associate with power as they are the top of the food chain.

Exactly NBM, there are many qualities and abilities that every animal has. I agree that Power animals are what we think in terms of strength, there is an author I discovered recently that says something similar...that power animals are each individual's true strength, but they are also there to accommodate what we need as well. Kind of like no one else can truly understand what we need except ourselves. I was just at the bookstore today and the author said that our power animals are a reflection or a mirror of who we are, and they can be considered our Soul Animal, I suppose the way he put it was better than what I termed it as a manifestation.

Here is a snippet of his explanation from his site:

Quote:

POWER ANIMALS

The Shaman has many methods and spiritual allies at his/her disposal for doing this sacred work. One of his main helpers is the Power Animal. Power animals are spirit beings in animal form that live in the lower world. The Lower World is a place of immense natural beauty with mountains, valleys, rivers, prairies and clean air. It is a landscape untouched by humans where the animals live in an undisturbed, natural environment. Power animals are only beneficial. They dearly want to connect with us and help us. Primarily they assist us with practical life problems and health matters. They come to help us heal, and give us their power and strength. Building an intimate relationship with your power animal enables you to become strong, healthy, confident and feel safe. Forging a strong connection with them can also boost our immune system.
If you don’t have your power animal, then traditionally it is seen that you will be weak, more prone to illness and disease, and not centred in your power. You can feel an increase in your life force and vitality when the animal is with you; it’s physically tangible. One of my teachers, a Native American shaman, said that we have been that animal in a past life, that’s how close a link we have to them.
Often people will resemble their animal, for example in their behavioural characteristics: the way they walk, talk, turn their head, use their eyes, what they like to eat, etc. Also there can be a strong physical resemblance .In one workshop a man kept encountering a seagull. He was very resistant to the bird as he wanted something much more grand. Everyone else could see that this was his animal as he so clearly looked like a gull. When I eventually said that the other name for seagull was 3storm rider2, he was finally able to accept his medicine.
Once you have found your animal, it is extremely helpful to begin to study it. You can research it via the internet, read books, watch programmes about it or, if you are lucky, observe it in nature. All this information will tell you a lot about your personality and who you are in essence.
It’s also important to maintain a strong link with the animal. You can do this by wearing a pouch around your neck with something in it that connects you to the animal, for instance a stone with an image drawn on it. Dancing the spirit of the animal, allowing it to come into your body as you dance, is a great way to build up a powerful relationship. They love to be allowed to express themselves in a physical body. Another traditional way of staying in tune is to have an altar in your home where you can put a carved figure of the animal. Many people also give food offerings through the fire to their guardian animal. In the shamanic way, we always give something back to the spirits who love and care for us so that it becomes a relationship built on mutual respect and giving. One of the fundamental principles of following a shamanic path is that we live in a prayerful way, honouring our spirit helpers and giving back to them the things that they like.

I think he is more traditional with his writings and views about power animals, its interesting.
