Two men who raided a drinks depot that supplies pubs and clubs were caught "heavily intoxicated" in a yard nearby.

Keith Cullen and Paul Wiggins were seen on CCTV swigging bottles throughout the overnight break-in and also posed for photos of themselves with their haul.

Both were previously convicted in their absence by magistrates in Swansea.

They sentenced Cullen, 33, to three months in prison suspended for a year while an arrest warrant remains outstanding for Wiggins.

He failed to attend Tuesday's sentencing.

Prosecuting Andrew Clems told the court that on 13 March this year the pair were seen by police close to the Kuehne and Nagel drinks logistics depot in Plasmarl in Swansea.

When staff arrived the following day for the Saturday shift they found there had been a break-in.

Cullen and Wiggins were arrested close to the site and "a large amount of alcohol" had been discarded on waste ground nearby.

Mr Clems said he was unable to provide a monetary value to the court.

An examination of the depot's CCTV footage showed the pair helping themselves to drinks.

"They were drinking throughout the time that they robbed the premises," added Mr Clems.

They also took pictures of themselves celebrating on a digital camera posing with cans they had stolen with the depot's beer barrels clearly visible in the background.

When they were arrested they were wearing the same clothes as in the CCTV footage and their own posed pictures.

"Wiggins still had a bottle of Budweiser in his hand," added Mr Clems.

Both were convicted in their absence on Friday.

Wiggins had failed to attend court while Cullen was judged to be too inebriated to be allowed in.

He was arrested for being drunk and incapable and held in a police cell until Saturday morning.

In mitigation for Cullen, of Waunarlwydd, Simon Howells said his client had suffered from a "chronic alcohol problem" for many years.

"This is not a sophisticated offence - it involved no planning at all," he added.

Although he said his client had a "formidable criminal record" few of the convictions were for burglary related offences.

Chairman of the magistrates bench Andrew Powell told Cullen the offence was "so serious only a custodial sentence is justified."

But he said they would suspended it for a year although Cullen would have to obey a curfew not to go out at night during the first three months.

He was also ordered to pay £150 prosecution costs.
