Another of my hobbies is playing wargames, that is simulations of military battles using maps ,cardboard unit markers called "counters",and rules to cover the situations that soldiers and armies get into. Some of my favorites are: World At War-a series from Lock 'n Load publishing about a possible war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in 1985 Europe. This is a platoon-level game where each piece represents 3-5 tanks,AFVs,or squads of soldiers. Lock 'n Load-another series from Ln'L publishing, this one is squad level man-to-man combat in WW2,Vietnam,the Falklands, and in my favorite set Day Of Heroes,"Blackhawk Down". The pieces here represent anywhere between 1-12 soldiers or 1 jeep, tank,or helicopter. A very cool game system! Harpoon-now in it's 4th Edition,Harpoon is a very sophisticated simulation of modern naval warfare. If only I could find an opponent........... Anybody else play wargames? |

I have an old game called Eastern Front - takes about 3 hours to set up and play just one round of combat...the rules are insane - but its cool as hell. Mostly we stick to much more basic games like Axis and Allies.... |

Eastern Front is famously complex. Harpoon is like that too. My first game of Harpoon took 20 hours to play! It was USS Nimitz group (me) versus the Russian fleet and a large force of Backfire bombers (my brother Jim). Lets just say that Harpoon is *not* the ideal first wargame. ( I lost BIG!) Axis and Allies is a fun series, and I agree, a lot quicker and easier to play. |
