![]() This is a Battlemech, a 15 meter tall walking God of Death, one of hundreds featured in one of my favorite wargames called Battletech. The game has been around for 25 years now - in fact how I got back into it was spotting the 25th Anniversary starter set in a game store! It reminded me just how much fun I used to have playing it and reading about it's extensive background setting. There are Battletech novels, video games, and even a short-lived cartoon from the mid 90's! The game is set a thousand years in the future, where humanity has settled hundreds of planets but still finds reason enough to fight amongst themselves. The primary weapon of war is the Battlemech, obviously inspired by the "giant robots" popularized in Japanese anime. In this future, semi-feudal lords known as the Secession Lords send in their armies for glory, resources, and ultimately to re-form the ancient Star League and bring about a new Golden Age. These Great Houses vary from a "British Empire" style democracy (House Davion) to the Japanese Warrior styled "space Samurai" of House Kurita. My favorite thing about Battletech is the way the game is written as a History of the Future, with maps, battle reports, and unit histories that ends up invoking the Napoleonic Era as well as WW2 and many others. |

What else do I like about Battletech?![]() Don't worry ladies, there are lots of good-looking men, too. ![]() If you're wondering, yes that is a Mechwarrior's uniform. The 'Mechs generate a great deal of heat from their fusion reactor and weapons, so managing heat build-up is one of the major themes of the game. It explains why the pilots wear as little as possible in the cockpit, too! Here's a music video with scenes from the Mechwarrior PC games: and here is the 1st episode of the 'toon: |

The unit I'm collecting now are Wolf's Dragoons:![]() They are a respected mercenary unit - with a secret. Why did they work for all 5 Secession Lords in a series? Where did they get their hi-tech Battlemechs - some never seen in the Inner Sphere? Colonel Jaime Wolf ain't telling. My favorite characters: ![]() Captain Natasha Kerensky is the leader of the Black Widow Company, composed of criminals and malcontents from the Dragoons, given a second chance to redeem themselves. They soon become a legend under Natasha's command, and Natasha herself is *the* legendary female Mechwarrior. Other pilots brag having survived meeting her on the battlefield! But nobody lives forever. Some 20 years after Natasha goes to the Happy Hunting Ground, the Dragoons are ambushed and betrayed, losing most of their warriors in nuclear bombardment and treasonous ambushes. For the sake of the unit, a legend is re-born. Under Captain Stacy Church: ![]() the Black Widows are forged again, this time from Dragoons who survived the betrayal and live only to kill the enemies that hurt the Dragoons so badly. They will make the Galaxy remember the Wolf's Dragoons are to be respected, and the Black Widows are a name to be feared. I'm painting Stacy's Widows as we speak, and I'll post pix of my miniatures as I get them done. |
