WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP)— A diamond ring valued at $3,500 was found in a Salvation Army red kettle in Winston-Salem over the weekend. The ring was found inside a neatly folded $20 bill from the kettle outside the K&W Cafeteria on Healy Drive. Major Kent Davis said there was also a little note inside the very generous gift. It said, "It's real. In loving memory of Benny and Phyllis." Kevin Slusher, appraiser at Windsor Jewelers, confirmed it was real on Monday. "Looks like it's 14-karat white gold with a mixture of princess cuts and round cuts. To put a value on this, looking at retail value--about $3,500," Slusher said. The donation came just days after the Salvation Army realized it will be helping 600 more Winston-Salem families than it has ever had to before. "It's going to help change lives. It's going to give hope to those struggling right now," Davis said. The ring was put in the kettle sometime Friday. Davis said they know the donation is intentional because it was not only wrapped but also had a rubber band around it. Davis said they often find things like buttons, coins from other countries, pills, keys and pocket crosses in the kettles. That's because they get grabbed up with a handful of change, Davis said. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-diamond-ring-found-in-salvation-army-red-kettle-20111212,0,101112.story such a blessing......really neat local story |
