Awaiting the Dragon

The wind whips wet snow through my hair, my beard
And stings the sight from my eyes.
Out over the grey, restless water I peer.
And wait for the dragons to come.

Beneath my feet, the drenched heather soaks
Dark through my thin leather shoes
I shelter behind my stout wooden shield
While I wait for the dragons to come.

The comforting weight of my short-blade seax
Rests slick in my quivering hand
Is it the cold that makes it shake so
Or is it the dragons to come?

They have come here before, these wolfhounds from hell
With their axe and their long-shafted spear
Our warriors perished, our children enslaved
At the hands of the dragons to come.

I must keep from sleep, though my eyes beg for rest
I must stand my watch across the bay
For the raven-crest sails will drive through the sleet
Then I will know that the dragons have come.
