An eerie calm had settled over Hogwarts. Rumors of a new dark entity rising had spread throughout the Wizarding world, even going as far to make headline news at the Daily Prophet. And, though Hogwarts had been a safe haven when Lord Voldemort held his reign of terror, the defenses around the school were now aged and hadn't needed to be reinforced in almost two decades.

Many of the professors worried that these rumors might, in fact, be true, but they continually reassured panicked students that as long as they were within school grounds there was nothing to fear. Many of the younger boys and girls would come to Kylee for this assurance as she had a motherly air about her and was more approachable than most and, every time, she would tell them that they were safe.

However, as the morning dew melted away from the grass outside of the castle that day, her hidden concern over the situation had become evident to anyone who saw her. Professor McGonagall had always been partial to her morning stroll about the school grounds, but she had yet to return for their usual mid-morning tea. She called for a few of the other professors to express her concern when she wasn't able to contact the Head Mistress. She paced across the office as she waited for them to arrive.

Yumi threw open the door to the headmistress's office, her breath catching in her throat at the sight of the place. It was perfect, pristine, as if nothing horrible had happened at all. The only problem was... Headmistress McGonagall was nowhere to be found.

She took in a slow, cautious breath, and tried to find her composure. As if that mattered at the moment. She was sure that the students had seen at least a glimmer of her anxiety as she quickly walked through the corridors. It had taken all her strength not to simply break into a full-fledged run. She'd been worried about something happening, she knew their defenses weren't strong enough...it was only a matter of time before they'd have had to have a press conference like this. And now her worst fears had been realized, maybe even surpassed--she could see it in Kylee's eyes. It wasn't just a break in.

"Are the others coming?" Yumi asked softly, closing the door again with a soft click and stepping forward to approach her friend and colleague.

Kylee's eyes turned to the entrance of the room as Yumi came through the door. She attempted a smile at the Potions professor, but she could hardly muster turning the edges of her lips upward. It was easy to tell that she was distressed as well, maybe even as much as she was.

"I believe so," she spoke once she had cleared away the lump that had formed in her throat. A crease formed in the center of her brow as she furrowed them. "Thank you for coming so fast. I didn't know what else to do. I sent an owl to the Ministry."

Gray threw open the door, pausing to catch his breath. He had just come back from his daily run to Hogsmeade when he noticed that there was a note sitting on his desk, calling for a gathering in the Headmistress's office. Yumi and Kylee were already there, standing together talking. Straightening out, he walked over to where they stood.

"Sorry I'm late. I only just saw your message, it's quite a run from Hogsmeade."

"It's alright," Kylee replied with a sigh as she tucked some of her dark locks behind her ear. "Did you, by chance, see the Head Mistress while you were making your way back?"

She bit her bottom lip as she looked to him for a response. She had traveled around the grounds but hadn't thought to go outside the weak barrier. Even had McGonagall gone out that way, she would be at greater risk at what Kylee's mind had concluded.

Gray looked confused.
"I didn't know McGonagall ever went to Hogsmeade. I thought she lived in the castle." He smiled, expecting Yumi and Kylee to laugh. When they didn't he frowned. "Is something the matter, or is my sense of humor failing?"

"I was hoping you'd say you had," she muttered as she began to pace once again. Her chest felt heavy as she thought of the possibilities. "I wasn't able to find her. She usually goes about the castle in the morning and then she and I have tea in the morning. When I came here, she still hadn't returned."

When Gray flew through the door, Yumi's hopes soared, believing that it was the Headmistress returning in a flourish. But no, of course it wasn't her... When had she even seen McGonagall "flourish" anyway? That was just ridiculous. Her mind must be weak with worry, she concluded, as her heart sunk again.
Kylee's must have been too, as she asked Gray a question that Yumi felt was very odd: Was the Headmistress at Hogsmeade? When did she ever leave the grounds without first consulting with the staff to make preparations for her departure? Without telling them who would be in charge while she was away? Without even... even mentioning in quiet conversation that she fancied herself a trip? None of them had even the slightest inkling of where she would be, because, well... it was McGonagall. Who among them ever thought she would ever be leaving?

Yet she was still hanging on Gray's every word as he replied to Kylee, the roller coaster emotions of building hope and then plummeting heartache leaving Yumi feeling sick. It was nauseating to feel so helpless while the world around her was going out of control.
Yumi bit her lip, her eyes closing as Gray replied with a negative and then tried to joke. She couldn't even muster a fake laugh. Kylee explained a bit, and Yumi broke.

"We think she's gone missing!" she said quickly, biting her tongue when she realized how frantic she sounded. She was really cracking, wasn't she?

Nolan rushed up the spiral staircase, his breath coming in ragged. He'd opened a letter that he'd found on his desk to find it was asking him to come up to the Headmistress's office for a meeting. He'd stepped out of his hut and saw Gray running past. He gathered that it must be serious news, so he broke into a brisk run.
For a little bit there, he'd been running right behind Gray, but somehow the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher had lost him before he'd gotten all the way up to the castle.

He knew he was right on his tail, though, since the phoenix statue hadn't completely finished turning back in place. But it had turned so slowly; he couldn't even wait for it to get completely out of the way before he had barreled through, squeezing past the smallest crack that he could fit through, scraping his shoulder a bit but not caring.

He rushed up the few remaining stairs, his other shoulder crashing against the door in an attempt to throw it open. "Ow." He was really going to do some damage if he didn't stop. But he didn't go bursting into the room, since the door was extremely thick and there was the little issue of turning the doorknob. His hands fumbled to turn the knob, but he couldn't grasp it.
"Stupid sweaty palms," he grumbled to himself, noticing that his breathing was still coming in ragged and trying to calm it a bit. Then he heard Yumi's voice rise up, sounding a little more than just anxious--she sounded scared. And did he just hear something about someone going missing?

He clamored at the doorknob and thrust his shoulder against the door again, but it didn't budge. His first thoughts were "I have to get in that room." His next were "What if the missing person is Kylee?"
He stepped back, the thought of kicking down the door flashing through his mind for a split second. Drastic times called for drastic measures. Lifting his hand and using a bit of unspoken magic, Nolan forced the door to shift from its frame, hinges popping off and elegant trim splintering to bits. He slipped in and threw his hand down, the door settling in its new place with a loud, crashing thud.

"Who's gone missing?" Nolan asked in a rush, his voice sounding breathless. His eyes flashed around the room to find Gray, then Yumi, then, to his great relief, Kylee. His heart leapt to see she was alright. But the relief left him all at once when he saw the look of distress on all their faces. Of course. Someone was still missing. Someone obviously important.

Splintered bits of door hit Gray as it exploded, admitting Nolan.

"Who's gone missing?" he shouted, looking a bit maniacal with bits of door all over his clothing. Gray frowned again, Nolan was causing more destruction than usual.

Pulling out his wand, Gray murmured "Reparo" and the door reconstructed behind Nolan. Turning to him, Gray brushed the door off of him and said, "Apparently McGonagoll has gone missing from her time walking around the school to her tea time with Kylee. But I'll let Kylee explain things, since she was the one who called all of us here."
