This is all entirely subjective, of course. For example, if you listen to a Brahms symphony, you can pretty much hear the agony and the struggles the composer wanted you to. Brahms was sort of obsessed with death. It all just seems to posses an almost deeper meaning than Musical Theater approaches. Things aren't so temporary or materialistic or self-relevant or something. It's hard to exactly explain. Classically trained musicians are generally very disciplined and often modest, except for some of the opera singers, but then you're beginning to move towards Music Theater.. If you listen to say, Rent, it sounds like a bunch of whiny teenagers whining. (Which is unfortunate, because it, and lots of other musicals for that matter, really tried to bring up some important issues.) Of course, some of the reasons for this is because of the massive following that Musical Theater has; there are "Musical Theater" kids, social groups, etc. And not all of them are talented and/or nice, they are also capable of being very self-centered, diva-ish people. Which isn't to say that all of them are like this (I know several of both kinds at Enloe), but I find many of them to be unpleasant for my own tastes. Take in mind that I'm used to a classical choral setting, which is very much a sort of team thing, and the entire mindset that Musical Theater creates just kind of ruins it. Long Story-Short: Subject Matter wasn't the correct word choice. Some people are jerks. |

I guess that makes more sense. I mean, that is a somewhat oversimplified and one-sided summary, but I think you know that. :P (That wasn't meant to be derisive!) I think I understand what you're getting at now though. I don't agree with a bunch of that, perhaps due to phrasing more than actual ideas. I don't know. But in any case, I don't feel like getting into it. xD Okay, so excitement, I just did some art! Like for realsies for the first time in a while! So I can't figure out how to get pictures off my camera on this computer, but as soon as I can, I'll post it here. It turned out so much better than I was expecting. :D Edited by crmsonbyrd, Nov 10 2010, 05:19 AM.

@Siggeh: Eh, I can understand that viewpoint. I've never exactly encountered people like that where I've been, but I do know that those people also exist, as they do in regular theatre, I assume it comes with the more active performing aspect (gosh I wish I could come up with better words). I honestly dread the time when I have to work with the more unpleasant types. So far I haven't had to worry about it though. All the theater people I've met up here thus far at App have been really nice, and I've been working with mostly upperclassmen too. I dunno, maybe I've just had a good run so far. @Crm: Awesome! Can't wait to see them.

I think he likes the subtlety. And musical theatre isn't about subtlety. |

I guess that's a good way to put it, subtlety? Complexity? I mean an 8 part choral piece just seems so much... better than some song from Broadway. I don't know. It's just my own opinion and it really ought not to concern you too much. If you like Music Theater, that's fine, and you should do whats good for you and not for me. |
