Took my grower pesticide course today so I will be able to buy them to work on my plots. Where do all you farmers/plotters buy yours? What do you prefer to use? |

Even I am looking for some organic pesticides? I am having a small area in my backyard. I am planning to plant a couple of crops for myself. I even had a though about hiring a pest control firm but not sure whether their chemicals are good for crops..!!! |

First welcome to this forum, great bunch of people here with loads of information to share. When you say, looking for pesticides your talking about many different types. Herbicides, Insecticides, Fungicides and Bactricides are more specific areas of pesticides. Some of these pesticides are pre-emergent, post-emergent and systemic. So you have to look at the problem of your crop, is their weeds interfering or taking over with growth (herbicide) or something is eating your crop and can you see the bug or insect (insecticide) or a different coloration or spots on the foliage (fungicides or bactricide). These are all indications that you might need some type of pesticide. That being said, sometimes it might be your crop lacking in some type of nutrient and can be corrected with an application of that nutrient. So, this should be your first step to correcting the problem then try a pesticide, if need be. Applying pesticides should always be your last resort because most are nasty to humans and the environment and safe and knowledgeable handling is required. Also, most pesticides in Ontario can only be purchased and applied by certified people, which you already know. Their are many safe alternatives to these restricted pesticides like safe organic subtitutes, crop rotation, cultivation and introduction of chickens and preying insects to your crop area. These safe alternatives can be researched online or contact the organic farmer groups. I think with a small backyard garden like you indicated I would keep it simple and stay away from pesticides for now. Take some photos and post your problem here so we can all help maybe solve that problem. Hope this helps....Friggs |
