Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image It makes me want to cry to see big game hunting so screwed up mainly I think by lack of preditor hunting and resource mismanagement. During my early years of hunting there were bounties on wolves, bears were considered nuiscence preditors, and there were many more wardens in field checking on hunt and animals. I also think there were a lot more hunters on average. Following is some of my early licenses.Posted Image
Some how the writing disappeared on this post.During the time of these licenses the mnr was better run. Now we have tag systems, no preditor control and fewer field people checking on hunters and game. I also think there were more hunters afield and lots more big game.

I got warned by wardens over that patch that got ripped off my hat in bush. It was a pain to keep on clothing. Got my first license in 1956. Had to have parents permission in writing and police signature and if they thought you were responsible you got it. My uncle and father trapped and hunted and also their best friend and they trained me. Got my first fox in january 1957 one of the 47 they shot that year out of a total of about 125 trapped and hunted. I also trapped with them mainly for muskrat and coons and some beaver. Bought my first gun 2 seasons later, a remington 25.06 with money I earned helping them on trap lines etc. There were no brush wolves in the area and a eastern timber wolf was a rarity. We did most of the hunting and trapping on foot and used horses and an old army jeep to get to the farthest away places. I remember going with them to get permission to hunt and trap on private farms but there was never any problems as farmers[my uncle] traded labor and my father and me would sometimes take his place. The original farm was sold to counties in the thirties and is part of a block of land run by south nation conservation authority. It was reforested. There is a trail named for our family ,the Benton trail, which is mainly on that farm. They bought better land 1 mile away and this was the area I started to hunt in. Now you have to get a permit to hunt on original land but not if you walk, bird watch or ride horses etc. Not hunter friendly in the last 10 years or so. I think the 50,s and 60,s were the best years of my hunting life even though I started to hunt moose and bear in the north.

Thanks for sharing the memories Woodman. I was born in the early 60's, started trapping in the 70's, & started hunting big game in the 80's. Times sure have changed since then. We still have lots of hunting opportunities here in Ontario. Let's hope it gets better not worst!

I could ramble on about this stuff forever. My first moose was shot along a railroad track in 21 a at 9 am. the third day of season. Scouting out the area a couple of days earlier noticed tracks crossing r road in an area of small beaver ponds on both sides of it. The gang of 4 was spread out in area about a half a mile apart some on track and some near the ponds. I was sitting on a block of wood under a 10 foot tall spruce tree and noticed a nose stick out from some similar sized trees that I thought were 150 yards away. It pulled back in than stuck its nose out again 2 or 3 times. I was pretty exited but waited til it finally stuck its full head out. I aimed for its neck behind the ear and fired and it jumped out on the track and I aimed for the heart and fired. Still kept going and I jammed my gun I was so exited. When I cleared it I looked up and it was down on the other side of the tracks. It was 167 paces from me and when it was skinned found the first shot hit the neck bone and went down it about 6 inches. The second shot caught part of heart and ended against opposite side under the skin. This was with my first gone bought the 25.06 with 140 grain remington bullets.
We got on the tracks with my 63 ford three quarter ton truck and drove to it and loaded it whole. We stayed at the camp over nite and left on next afternoon after breaking camp. At a check point a mnr biologst took teeth samples and said it was a 3 plus bull in excellent shape. Nobody had taken a camera with us and the only thing I have is its horns. I should take a picture and put it on here. I still have no digital camera prefering my 35.

That's awesome. 25-06 is a caliber I would like to own some day. I created a more recent post on how to post pics:
