Wondering if anyone has had the experience of purchasing / using a cell phone signal booster in remote areas. At our lodge, we loose cell signal approximately 15 kms from the lodge. We're hoping we can put up an antenna on our 50' tower so that we might have cell phone coverage in the lodge, cabins and a little of the surrounding area. Currently we use a Bell radio phone (same idea as a 2 way radio system), which is very costly, and in the near future will actually be eliminated due to it being so outdated. If anyone has any knowledge in this area, I'd certainly appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance Gary |

I got one for Christmas. It's a Wilson sleek - its portable and made for a vehicle. It came with a 4" stubby antena but I bought a 12" whip to improve range. I've only used it once on a trip from Thunder Bay to Geraldton and experienced a good signal the whole way. From what i've heard is that it will work if you get a least one bar without the booster. Wilson also makes other - more powerful units for vehicles and buildings but they'll cost you. It might be worth looking at a topo map (check elevations) to see if there are any obstacles between your tower and the cell tower. You might want to climb your tower to se if you get a bar or two just with the cell phone. If you did, then a booster should work for you. Good luck. Sam Edited by Sam Menard, Apr 26 2014, 08:44 AM.

Thanks Sam ...yes ... I talked to a company yesterday - and his recommendation was ... climb the tower ! Won't get my a$$ up there ... but I have a young guy that loves heights ! He also said to try sending a text and take a Bell phone and a Rogers phone .... if they both have weak signal ... a booster will work. Thanks again Gary |

certainly can't afford a Satellite phone at $1200 plus $1.50 a minute ! Plus ... half the time they don't work in Northern Ontario for some reason ... you have to get in a boat or vehicle to find a signal ... pretty useless for that kind of money. |

From what I hear the global stars are getting better and have solved a lot of there past issues. The old phones still work so if you have one or can get a used one it might be a good option. You need some type of cell signal to boost with the booster. If you don't have anything you might be SOL. 15 km's is pretty damn far to make up being that the topography varies so much. Maybe you'll get lucky. Check to see if you can rent one from a local communications company in your area to check out the signal before you drop the money on the camp base units. The tend to be around the $400 plus dollar mark on Amazon for the base models. |

15 KMS isn't too far for a booster if you have a good shot at the cell tower. Where we moose hunt, the cell tower is 16 kms away and we get a bar or two when standing on a hill. The booster is needed to get the phone signal to the cell tower. Sam |

Same thing here Sam,, we get no bars in camp but with the Wilson we can at least get a text out. I know a lot of hunters don't even like a cell phone in camp, but when you get my age, we have family members back home that need to be checked in on , on a regular basis. |
