![]() It's the kind of story as Canadian as maple syrup - a northern Ontario man found a baby moose on the side of the highway, picked it up and took it to Tim Hortons. "She still had the umbilical cord and was still wet when I found her," Stephan Michel Desgroseillers told Shirley Erkila, who posted a video of her petting the calf outside the coffee shop near Sudbury, Ont., on Monday. "The wolves would have got to her," Desgroseillers said. In a posting on the radio station Q92 Rocks Facebook page, Desgroseillers said he was the one who picked up the small calf and took it to the Wild at Heart Animal Shelter, but not before having to keep it for the night. On his own Facebook page, he said the moose calf was "the sweetest thing ever except for the crying." The male calf is now being cared for by staff at the animal shelter. |

This happens alot with fawns too. People come across fawns where the mother has left them as she goes feeding. She knows it is safest to leave it there until it gets stronger. Newborns have no smell that attracts predators so they are generally safe unless a predator stumbles over them. Well meaning people find the sleeping fawn & take it thinking the mother abandoned it. Just not the case! Mother will always return for her baby. People just need to be better educated about wild aminals.

Years ago my company took us to Oliver's Lodge They had a pet bull that someone saved and dropped off. It was about 3 months old when we were there and getting big and was totally tame. They said they would soon have to take it way out into the bush and although they saved it from doom, they knew he was doomed. The first hunter he see's he's going to run up to and look for a hand out. They need to be left where there are till mother returns or Mother Nature takes care of it. |

The mother probably left because the guy got close. The calf should be killed because being a bull it will be raised with no fear of humans which in the rut makes for an extremely dangerous animal (I'm talking from experience) to have in captivity and to release it back into the wild would have liability if it killed someone which would be highly probable. This is not a deer, it is a big, mean killing machine when full grown. Seems cruel to kill it but it would just save everyone a lot of time, money and emotions to do it sooner than latter. The guy should absolutely be charged for doing this. There is enough public awareness out there that he should have known not to. |

Depending what part of northern Ontario this is the wolves very well would have gotten the calf anyways even if it was with its mother . I don't think people fully understand just how many wolves there are in these parts . It's a reality that the Moose population is in trouble , the recent cut of tags prove that , plus everyone that lives where there are wolves have been saying there's to many for years . Add the bear problems to this whole story and now you can get a sense what these calf moose face just to make it till fall. Could he be charged for this ? I'm sure he could I guess but he kept it for a night then brought it to a shelter . I'm sure he figured he was doing the right thing . Perhaps we should be more forgiving and treat him like a poacher and give him a second chance as he might not have been fully aware of all the laws lol |

Agreed. Good chance the cow was not far and feeding. There is a good chance it woulda been a meal for the wolves but that's the same outcome for a lot of other calves. At least if it was left where it was supposed to be there is a decent chance of it suriviving and contributing to the cycle. I'd like to see this guy charged. |
