Submitted photo This cougar was spotted in the area of Cranberry Lake Road north of Grafton Thursday. Ministry of Natural Resources staff were called in to set a live trap.

ALNWICK/HALDIMAND TOWNSHIP - A full-size cougar that had been lying under some trees in the backyard of a Cranberry Lake Road residence Thursday was on the move again as of about 4 p.m.

Ministry of Natural Resources personnel were called in to set up a live trap in the area and emergency response team personnel were guarding the scene.

The trap was to be baited with a steak and a whole chicken. Once caught, the cougar will be relocated to the north.

As of press time the animal was still on the loose.

Earlier Thursday Northumberland OPP had blocked the driveway and called for assistance from the MNR to tranquilize the animal before it took off.

The cougar was first spotted Monday and OPP and local residents have been keeping a watchful eye out for it.

On Thursday morning, Jean Wilson spotted the animal under her back deck and a short while later it wandered off. At 2:30 p.m. it was lying under some trees in her backyard.

Wilson's husband John didn't seem too concerned and even went out to pick vegetables.

An early sighting of the cougar happened Monday when an area man's dogs were within 10 feet of it and it didn't do anything. The cat backed up against a car and when the man tried to scare it away the animal lay down in the bushes.

Better shoot the damn thing and be done with it. Sounds like it has no fear of humans

Cool. They've been seen all around that area for years. Who knows where it came from but hopefully they can trap it alive and do some DNA testing to see if they can figure out if its been a released animal via owners or a wild strain.
I don't always chase tail, but when I do; its whitetail. Stay camo my friends.

No you can't shot it , it's an endangered species.
Plus there is no season for Cougar's in Ontario.

If it were a wild one, they would never have caught it.
