well I planted 3 plots on Saturday due to the land I hunt being unworked this year,(was supposed to be fall wheat). each plot is roughly 1 and half acres. I planted "tripper", its 50%peas and 50% triticale (wheat/rye hybrid mix). do you guys think it has a chance being planted so late? Im just looking for a few inches of growth. I cultivated each plot, then used an electric spreader to spread the seed. Then ran the cultivator over top again only about an inch in the ground. praying for rain tomorrow!

You will definitely get a few inches of growth or maybe more. All depends on the weather. The Tripper mixture came out in the early 90's as a dairy forage or hay and is meant for spring planting so you can get full growth for hay. That being said, it should work for deer forage before and into the deer season. The triticale should be up and sprouted in a week or so and maybe 10-14 days for the field peas. It all depends on your soil moisture and if you got some of that rain last Friday you might be OK for moisture.

Do you have a trail camera on any of these plots ?
Just to confirm, did you plant all three 1 1/2 acre plots with Tripper ?
If so, 4.5 acres will hold out till hunting season depending on your deer population. My deer hit my peas at 3 weeks after planting and finish them all in 2-3 weeks.
What was your planting rate ? they recommend 100-150 lbs/ac

hey friggs, yes we had a lot of rain on Friday. All my plots have cameras, and all 3 are tripper. I planted at 150 lbs per acres.

Hey Jake,
Sounds like your good to go. You should have a good thick plot with that rate of Tripper. Its calling for a little rain Thursday evening and more on Saturday in my neck of the woods.
I would like to see some photos of your plots 30 days after planting.
Next year, I'm going to make my own mixture, 100 lbs/ac of 4010 peas, 50 lbs/ac of oats and 10-15 lbs/ac of red clover. Plant, disc and roll end of August then 3-4 weeks after planting broadcast 50-75 lbs/ac of winter rye on top just before a good rain. Next spring, clover and rye will feed deer and critters till planting.

Good luck...Friggs

I own a 205 acre hunt camp east of Orilla which use to be an old farm in the early 1900's and is second growth. The neighbouring land is just used for grazing cattle and no crops so the soil is sandy loam and requires nutrients when planting. I grew up with farming so I learned a bit that way and help out the last 20 years so I'm no expert.
I have three plots totaling 1 1/2 acres and a new apple and pear orchard. I would like to plant more but my deer population is down and its costly with the poor soil. So, I stick with 2 kill plots and a half acre destination plot. So I focus on cover and browse.
