Clovers and Chicory ready for the season

Several weeks ago I got my stands ready and trails mowed for the fall season. Especially my food plots like this Ladino, Alice white clover and chicory plot. Last year by the end of October it was eaten to the ground but it wasn't as mature and lot more forage this season.

I planted this mixture in the fall of 2013 with a nurse crop of oats and rye. The following spring and summer it grew slowly and their was some growth but not as much as this year. Right now its at 10-12 inches tall and ready to be mowed down by the deer.

I'm really pleased with it so far with some broad leaf weeds and very little grass, thanks to a dose of clethodim. I also mowed it several times this summer and fertilized it in spring.

For those that don't know chicory its the long leaf plant that looks like a dandelion in the photo above.
I'll try to post some photos of this same plot (1/4 acre) in early November and we'll see how much is left. I still have another 1/2 acre plot in the background of the photo below with a different mixture, but that's for another post.

Hoo boy that looks nice. Is the plan to keep it in clover forever or rotate it to something else?

The plan is to keep it that way for 3-5 years or until I get bored then rotate, but for now just mow several times and fertilize and maybe a little frost seeding once in awhile.
That way I can focus on the other plot a bit more and maybe a clover trail off that plot at the north end.
How are your plots doing so far ? Anything nice on your cams ?

Sweet. I think I'll do that with my brassica plot next year (it's been in turnips two years and they say to rotate). All of my deer pulled a houdini when the acorns started dropping but it seems early this year so it may actually be good for the season. Based on last year, I'm just going to stay out and go sit in the blind Oct 1st and see what I see. Any nice deer using yours?

I agree in regards to acorns. Big juicy acorns dropping everywhere must be from all the rain we had and yes they are early. Not to much on the cams just a few young bucks and the same ole does with fawns. I've noticed lots of turkey signs around the plots and some bear crap.
I'm going to also hinge cut along my fence line that runs along my dirt road to keep cattle and trespassers out. I'll hinge cut waist height on the road side of the fence and chest height on my side of the fence. This should make it difficult to enter or even see into my property from the road. I'll also cut 3-4 openings and put two strands of barb wire where the deer cross the road. I've done some research on this and I'll post my progress on this project later in the year, should work.

Wow, looks amazing. Are the deer hitting it or just that dog right now? ;)

I thought I would show you my 1/4 acre clover and chicory plot after the season. This plot just finished its second year feeding the wildlife on my property.
The deer are in this plot most evening and you can see the height of the clover is up to my dogs belly.
