I love chickpeas and my family eats them about once a week. I have no idea on growing and I now deer will love them so this is what I found surfin. Here it gives you some details on planting, it can be planted in Ontario and has the maturity dates the same as corn and soybeans. http://www.harvesttotable.com/2009/04/how_to_grow_chickpeas_garbanzo/ Some more details and contact information. http://www.agr.gc.ca/eng/industry-markets-and-trade/statistics-and-market-information/by-product-sector/crops/pulses-and-special-crops-canadian-industry/chick-peas/?id=1174598188373 They have been researching and growing chickpeas in Thunder Bay Agriculture Research Centre. That all being said...I think their might be some factors in growing this crop, like the price and availability of the seed. Will the seed stay in the pods or drop to the ground before hunting season. Will your deer eat them all before they mature or not touch them at all. It might be worth trying and seeing what the deer think if its not to expensive. If you plant soybeans then chickpeas can be planted in your soil, they're both legumes. Let me know what the price is to plant one acre if you decide to give chickpeas a try. Friggs |

I don't know if the deer really like them any better than soybean's or winter peas. Maybe it's just what the deer have available to eat? That's what I was wondering if it would be worth the cost to plant them... Has anybody else planted them before? |

Wilebski, My deer love 4010 peas and I plant these peas every fall along with rye grain, oats, clover and tillage radishes. My 1/2 acre plot was eaten right down to nothing by December. I found a website that said deer love Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) and cost around $90.00 - $100.00us an acre to plant. I'm guessing that doesn't include fertilizer. Friggs |

WoW" they cost a little more than reg peas. I wouldn't think they would be much tastier? Unless they get sweet or something. I might just stick to the regular ones as well. |
