Warningshot,
Austrian Winter Peas are the best but hard to find and are very expensive.
I like to use 4010 peas or 6040 if you can find the 6040. I tried other forage peas such as Partridge Peas and Meadow Peas but not the same as 4010.

Late last summer (August 17th) I planted a mixture of 100lbs/ac. 4010 peas, 50lbs/ac. oats, mixed together, then 6lbs. tillage radishes, 10lbs/ac. Crimson clover and then on Sept. 12th I broadcasted on top and before a good rain 100lbs/ac. of rye grain. I really liked this mixture and I will plant it again this summer especially the crimson clover for the first time. Crimson is an annual clover but grew fast and provided lots of forage and handle the browsing pressure really well, I was really impressed. Keep in mind we had a nice warm fall with a late frost.

I bought and paid to plant a half acre - 50lbs. 4010 peas and 25lbs. oats mixed together in two bags was $35.15 from Midnight Acres, Lindsay, Ont. 705-878-8200
Crimson Clover 5 lbs. @ $1.85 per lbs. and Tillage Radishes 3lbs. @ $3.75 per lbs. from Speare Seeds, Harriston, Ont. 1-519-338-3840 (mailed to my house)
Rye Grain 50lbs. bag @ $18.65 from Orono, Ont. Co-op 905-983-9134

My deer herd started hitting this plot around early September and were in it almost every night.
Most of this mixture winter kills but the rye is coming on strong now and I will mow the rye sometime in early June to kill it. My Deer have been browsing in this plot since early snow melt this spring but will leave once weeds and other plants start growing. The turkeys have been visiting this plot every few days since March and scratching for food like crazy. My brother already shot his turkey and I'm still trying, maybe this weekend.

Try phoning around near you for 4010 peas.

Warningshot,
Yes, cold hardy and most of my 4010 peas are all gone by late September-October. My Deer love these peas like candy and seek them out before eating anything else. These 4010 peas are a cool season forage variety and like to be planted with a grain such as oats, barley, rye or wheat, usually a 50/50 mix. They really pull the deer into your plots early season and that's why I plant them in a mixture as stated above and not alone.

Good luck and keep us posted.....Friggs
