I picked up a summit climber this spring. I also have a ladder stand and a hanger, I'll be setting up the ladder and hanger in the early fall and then prepping a couple of trees on public land for my climber.

Great article. Just moved a ladder stand this weekend and won't be back until later in the summer... sneaking in to check a camera and then that's it until October. I like to stay away as along as I can hold on.

There is a lot of value in hanging a stand early - any racket and site disturbance will be long forgotten by the local deer once hunting season rolls around. There's also some reasons why it may not be a good idea:
- Safety is the biggest reason, as a stand left out in the elements will deteriorate: chains rust and straps break down.
- Unattended treestands send a message to other hunters: "this is a good spot".
- Thieves may steal stands that are left out too.
- Logging can happen and ruin everying.
- Weather may also damage the tree by the time hunting season rolls around.

In my situation, I hunt 6 hours away from where I live so I hang my stands when I get out to the woods. Many of my spot are in the woods such as along funnels or adjacent to a natural opening. Other hunters are too lazy to hunt where I do so the deer are rather unsuspecting of human danger. In my situation, I find that the best hunting success is within 48 hours of hanging the stand. After that, my intrusions into the woods causes the deer start to wise up and change their travel habits.

I use to take my dog for a walk ( he never ranged out of my sight,) place the stand and whistle to him. He would lead me out. From experience the deer just. Circled out of sight and were back with in a hour.

I've had something similar happen with my trail cameras. I put them out and when I checked the sd card weeks later, deer were sniffing my camera 15 mins after I put it up.

Hey here is something to consider while hanging the stand. Take time to cut a path in and out of your stand. enough of a trail that you can silently sneak into your stand, and preferable downwind of your hunt. It make a big difference.
