Has anybody ever used one?

This is one thing I've never used on a moose hunt, but want to try it this fall's archery moose hunt.

One of the members of our group and myself got to discussing about getting a moose decoy to use on our archery hunt, and I think I will be ordering myself one.

Anyway, after our discussion I got to thinking it would come in handy when/if a bull ever decides to hang up out of bow range if he can't see the cow that is suppose to be where the calling is coming from. This would be the perfect tool to keep him interested, make him less wary/timid, and may help in bringing him into bow range

I'm thinking of one of these brands here, and so far I think I'll be going with a Montana Decoy because it's more compact and light weight.

Yeah, it's legal to use moose decoys in Ontario.

I wouldn't advise to use one during gun season because it might get shot at by other hunters.

What would they be made out of, hopefully something lightweight?

I'm not sure what they're made of but I would think they'd have to be lightweight

Cc, did you not check the Montana decoy link on the top post.

They tell you what they are made of..

The Montana decoys are made of a durable polyester and spring loaded somehow, but I'm not sure what the Renzo is made of.

They do look good. The renzo one looks the best between the two.

Yeah, the picture looks a bit clearer on the Renzo, but it would be bulkier to drag around with you than the Montana would be.

I never much thought about a moose decoy but I dont see why it wouldn't work. Their eyesite isnt very good so I dont see why a black bedsheet stretched between a couple saplings wouldn't work. I'm going to try it this coming season.

Mike,I forgot to mention Jim Shockey did a hunting show.He had a painted head of a cow and walked up on a big bull .Decoys definitely work. :D :D ;) I've been using them for the past 17 years on deer.Last year we used a montana decoy on our elk hunt.We had a cow come in.She never knew we were less than 25 yards down and cross wind.Brent J..

I don't think it would be a bad idea to get a couple of these Brent! ;)

I have that Shockey "Land of the Giants" as well and it's a good one. Also I just watched the 3rd DVD from the Moose Madness Series and the guy talks about the use of decoys in this one. This Moose Madness Series are by far the best DVDs out there as far as moose/moose hunting information goes, everything you need to know is covered.

I'll be picking one of the Montanas up. BTW, word is the Renzo moose decoy is discontinued.

That's pretty neat Whitepine, I take it they're great for bowhunting.

What are your decoys made of?

I hear ya about the landscaping material, but how did you get the shape of a moose?...

Looks like the cloth was put onto somekind of moose shaped frame you made.

I just lay the material on a big table and drew a moose on it. Then cut it with a tile knife. I left strips sticking out and got my mom to fold them over and sew them up to hang the moose from a rope. I stretch a rope between two trees and have mono fishing line tied down from the rope to the folded over strips located on areas of the decoy to support it in place.
Does that make any scense?

Two hunters went moose hunting every winter without success.

Finally, they came up with a foolproof plan. They got a very authentic female moose costume and learned the mating call of a female moose. The plan was to hide in the costume, lure the bull, then come out of the costume and shoot the bull.

They set themselves up on the edge of a clearing, donned their costume and began to give the moose love call. Before long, their call was answered as a bull came crashing out of the forest and into the clearing.

When the bull was close enough, the guy in front said, "Okay, let's get out and get him."

After a moment that seemed like an eternity, the guy in the back shouted, "The zipper is stuck! What are we going to do?"

The guy in the front says, "Well, I'm going to start nibbling grass, but you'd better brace yourself."

Lonewolf, I got a moose Montana decoy at home. Carried it last Falls archery hunt in QC, but never used it since all the moose tracks had disapeared and only the wolf tracks remained.

Mikka (Dan) also has one, he had his delivered by the company, while I bought mine from Gobble & Grunt Archery (after seeing Mikka's decoy deployed at Iggy's restaurant parking lot).

I intend to use mine again this Fall.

By the way, if you were going to attend again this year the RackMan's March 8th, 2007 in Gatineau presentation (not at same place as last year), I'm sure he will have his latest inflatable Moose decoy set-up on stage for all to see.

LeGrand, How much did you pay for the Montana moose?

BTW, Yes I plan on making it so thanks for the heads-up on Rackman's presentation, and I can't wait to see this inflatable moose decoy! ;)

Where is this 2007 presentation gonna be taking place at?

thanks

Lonewolf, I can't exactly remember the price, but I believe it was in the $150.00 range. Rob Argue made me a special price at the Carp Fair last Fall with the promise (for the deal) of going to his store official opening and buying something in exchange, which I did afterwards.

----------

As for the RackMan's presentation it is going to be held at the École des Érablières, located at:

37 Chemin Des Érables
Gatineau, QC
J8V CA? (darn missing a digit)

I printed a map on MapQuest from the address.

Briefly, it's locate in Gatineau off Rue St-Louis (north of Alonzo bridge), just pass the Collège St-alexandre De La Gatineau. From St-Louis, go up Chemin Des Érables and it should be between Rue St-alexandre on he left and Rue Des Sucres, also on the left.

See you there.

Thanks for the info, Michel.

I forgot to ask you whether they sell the tickets at the door where it's taking place, or do I have to go to L'Archerot Plus to purchase them?

I also just thought of something. Rob is a member at KAC, so maybe, just maybe I can get somewhat of a deal off him for one of these Montana decoys...

Thanks again!

I always buy my ticket ahead of time, just in case the house is full when I arrive, but if you wish to buy at the door you can take the chance.

I bought mine from the guy who's responsible for RackMan's presentation in Gatineau. His name and phone number is pierre at 819 568 7738

10-4 LeGrand!

I got my nephew to pick my tickets up at L'Archerot Plus last year as he lives just around the corner from there, so maybe I'll get him to run over there for me again.

Mike,

Does he have a web site that describes the show? I'd like to attend, but $150 is expensive for me right now, it must be a heck of a show.
