Just getting back from the moose hunt. I had a great time and made some new friends along the way. I met some gentlemen from Wisconsin last year on the hunt and after talking we both decided to pool resources and hunt together for the 2009 season as we both had a small group. My Dad started off the hunt by killing his first moose a nice 2 1/2 year old cow in the morning. That right there made the season for me. For the afternoon I had the fortune of taking out a 67 year old man for his first Moose ever. We played the wind and set up on a swamp and stayed way back. We remained very quiet and in about an hour a Cow and calf came down from a ridge and began feeding in the swamp. After watching them and scanning the woods for a bull we decided we should take the calf. He was shaking badly. I asked if he could make that shot, he said he would sure try. He then asked why my gun was still in it's case, I said tonight's hunt is all about you. At 220 yards he fired on the calf dropping it hard on his first shot. The smile on his face alone was worth the long walk in.
The following day a long standing member of my group harvested another calf, at that point we were all set and did not care if we seen another moose or not. After several close calls with a few different bulls that were working the call but just would not show themselves we decided the rut is at it's end and if they weren't coming out we should go in. We devised a plan of dropping everyone off on different bays around a peninsula and I would get dropped off a mile down from the blockers and work the bush towards them in the hopes of someone getting a poke at a bull. I was 3/4 of the way through the drive when I spotted the head and rack of a good bull. I raised my rifle and put the cross hairs on his neck and squeezed the trigger and down he went. I immediately started apologising to the group on the radio saying we are in for a lot of work. After 8 long hours we had the bull loaded and back at camp. We had a super hunt and enjoyed every second. Now I could use a vacation. lol

The deer took a licking last winter. My guess the cold weather and the wolves put them in check. That should help out the moose population. I did see a total of 39 deer but only one good buck and he was on private property. We shot no deer.I missed a doe early in the week and passed on some shooting due to moose on the brain. lol.

Mattones those are not bullet holes in the rack they are battle scares from another bull. Looks like there is someone there to fill his shoes.

This is gonna rub some the wrong way I know but I can't bite my tongue any longer. 4 moose 4 5 guys is pure and simple %100 greed and very VERY poor moose management on your gangs part. The ole boy getting the calf, thats great, good for you, good for him. But to shoot another calf when you already had 2 moose down for 5 hunters is just plain stupid.

Acuually it is called supply and demand. I won't eat beef so I have to get my meat in other places. Sorry for your disapointment. Why would you pay for tags if you don't want to try and fill them ?
