Been working on my "bucketlist" the last few years Doing homework on a Ontario moose hunts. Being I've never been on a moose hunt in the past, seems to be one towards the top of the list. From my research, I've gathered that as a N/R hunter we have to use a guide. Our group prefers DIY hunts, is there any other option? The moose draw seems a bit confusing, any thoughts or recommendations on the best ways to put in for draw? Preferable areas to increase draw odds? Better results on draw for bowhunting vs gun hunting? Looking into a remote fly-in hunt, has anyone done one of these? Thoughts? things that would have been done differently? Thanks for any help that can be shared. |

its going to depend on what area you go to for a guide, so a bit more homework will be in order as to where you want to hunt. The area we hunt is a no guide for non residents but you have to stay at the lodge and he supplies you with a tag or two. Much harder to get a gun tag from outfitters though as they can trade in 1 gun tag for 2 archery tags. I dont even think a non resident can apply in the draw for a tag, so that should help clear any confusion *L* There also isnt much reasoning to which gives better odds between gun and archery. Here is an example from the 2010 regs Area 21 need 4 pool 1 for a gun bull tag need 8 pool 1 for an archery bull tag across the road in area 19 need 5 pool 1 for a gun bull tag need 3 pool 1 for an archery bull tag |

I have done fly-in moose hunts in Quebec, but never in Ontario. Also worked as a freelance guide at the same outfit for a few seasons. A North Western Ontario outfitter posted his website just the other day. I've never hunted with them myself, but may plan on it for a future hunt. If I'm reading it right, I believe they offer a US clients package that has a "100% on your own Moose Hunt" priced at $1250.00 U.S. Price includes Adult tag, Land Use Permit and maps. From what I've heard, moose are plentiful in that area. It might be worth some looking into. I know I will be looking into another fly-in in the near future, very near future and just might be going through this outfitter if I don't decide to go back with the same Quebec outfitter. Check them out. Also check other outfitters out and see what suits you best befiore you make a choice. http://www.northumbrianresort.com/detail.aspx?iid=1063 |

NR do not need a guide in Ontario(unless in a guide required zone), but must use the services of an outfitter. The outfitter will supply the tag or tags and must accommodate the hunters with their establishment. There are some areas with good moose hunting in Ontario, but the herd is definately not anywhere near where it was 10 years ago in the NW. Outfitter tags have been cut as a result and resident group sizes also increased. Definately do yor research on the area you are looking at and get recent refernces. In the areas North of Siox Lookout, Pickle Lake, and Red Lake ask if natives hunt the area you will be hunting. The different bands up there have moose derbies the week before the resident and NR season opens. Fly in , drive in, and boat in areas are all hunted, so like I say, do your research before picking so you get the hhunt you are looking for. |

Guys,Thanks for the info Helped clearup some of the questions I have. We really haven't picked a area as of yet, just starting the research stage. I think we can rifle or bowhunt, either one. Good point about the tribes hunting, had not thought of that. Starting to check some references on different outfitters. What can we expect from a fly-in DIY hunt. Cabin, maps, boat/motor, fly-in/out seems to be standard. Would you have a area to your own group? or share area? |

I wouldn't accept a fly-in if my group had to share an area with another group. That's the whole idea of a fly-in hunt. You're paying to get away from that. It wouldn't be much of a fly-in if you have hunters from another group hunting the same general area your group is hunting. Make it a point to ask the outfitter how close/far the next camp is to the camp you would be staying and hunting at. |

A fly-in should be exclusive depending on the size of the lake you'll be staying on. A small lake with one cabin and you're on your own. Larger lakes may have multiple cabins owned by separate outfitters. There are many lakes north of Nakina that have 1 cabin only. These are located in northern WMU's so you can hunt the rut period with archery or rifle. >Bill |
