I know that this post is a little later then it normally should be . I had a pretty good year for moose hunting in 2010. It was on opening morning that I had pretty good luck this year. When I finally got to my watch ( i walk about 3 miles) I found that it was already occupied by another hunter. I stopped and talked to him for a couple of minutes but since its crown land I didnt put up a fuss ( his camp was closer to this lake then mine was) so I moved back into the brush 1/4 mile along a big marsh and set up. I did a fair bit of calling with out any luck. At about 10 oclock the other hunter walker over to me and said that I was welcome to that watch becasue he was done for the morning and they were hunting in another area that afternoon. I moved back out to the lake(its my favorite watch) and did a little more calling. About an hour later I gave a couple of soft calf calls to which there was a reply. A pair of moose walked out to the edge of the lake and my 7mm RUM was tracking the smaller one. They were 350 yards from me and I was really puzzled by the calf becasue it had all of the calf features but it didnt seem right. I knew it wasnt a yearling but I still waited till i was really sure that It was a calf. My 7mm cracked once and down it went and stayed that way. When the other guys came to give me a hand we had a large argument of whether i made the right choice becasue they didnt think it was a calf even though the teeth said that it had to be. ( I stopped at the MNR on the way home and they confirmed that it was a calf). We finally got it back to camp around 3:30 and the guys figured that It was to late to try for another hunt. I did a little calling while sitting on the deck of the camp and if I didnt get an answer. One of the guys was fishing out in the lake in front of the camp and three moose came down to the water within a 100 yards of him. A big bull, a cow and a calf but he didnt have his rifle so they ambled back up the hill into the bush. So we knew that I wasnt all that bad of caller or I was just lucky. On the tuesday morning it was pouring rain and we decided to hunt in near the camp. I got stuck in a thick tag alder marsh where my shots would be about 100 yards max. I had just got to my watch when one of the guys tramping put up a couple of moose. They headed back out to the lake and one guy got shooting at a big bull going through the trees. We where told over the radio that NO ONE WAS TO SHOOT AT ANY OTHER MOOSE because this one might be hit and we had only one tag. Just then from off to the north I hear three heavy dull shots. The one of the guys in the other camp that we partner with came on the radio and said he had just shot a nice bull but it wasnt the same moose that we where hunting. We all lost our tempers at that( there was hell to pay later). Thankfully our fellow missed the bull or else we would have had a real problem on our hands. I made sure and spent several ours tacking the big bull just to make sure he wasnt hit and as it turned out when I finally got a really good look at him that he wasnt. One of our guys could go hunting because he had a major surgery on his shoulder. We took my moose out on Wednesday becasue it was suppose to turn warm . We picked our member up and went back in that night. The guys had gone bear hunting that day but they only saw another moose. I took the rifle and my call out on thursday and managed to call in a cow with a pair of twin calves but we limit our kill to only two moose so they got to walk but I still got the calling practice. I spent all that afternoon hunting birds and got my limit. It was a really good hunt with lots of pictures when I get around to posting them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
