Well we never connected this year. Weather, wind, time and a new wmu got the better of us this year. We only had 3.5 days to do it and we had strong winds for 3/4 of the time. We managed to call in one the first night but we ran out of shooting light. The secound day the weather turned sour and it rained with high winds. The third day the morning was windy but winds settled and we had a good evening. After calling my third sequence of calls I could hear a bull coming. We where all set... The grunting bull was coming down a alder swale and was going to have to cross a small clearing. He worked his way towards me and got to within 20 yards and held up in the thick stuff. He eventually turned and startd to walk off. I couldn't get a good look at him but it looked to be a large moose.. i didn't see his rack. I then decided to challenge him.. He never like that. He came back grunting step fo step. He was coming along the edge of the old cut this time and I could see him clear as day. At 100 yards I couldn't see a rack.. at 50 yards still no rack.. 40 yards no rack.. It was a cow.. She was grunting just like a bull. I had her broadside at 37 yards grunting..... I watched her as she back tracked to around 50 yards and I could see another moose was shadowing her in the timber. I started to draw when it was coming out of the bush. At this time the cow was started to walk across the cut. The other moose picked up its pace... then another.. It was twin calves. I grunted but they wouldn't stop following mom. It was a 50 yard moving shot and I passed... They eventually got around us enough to wind us and walked off.. I couldn't believe it a grunting cow... I only seen this once before in the spring when I split a cow with her new born calf. The last morning of the hunt we got a reply again. This time he was raking so I new it hand antlers. But at the 80 yard mark the wind started to swirl and he locked up. 5 mins went by and I new he had smelled us...At that moment he did a 180 and trotted off. All and all it was a good hunt.. till next year. But we are going back to more familar land.

Sounds like you had a very action packed hunt considering the weather and learning some new area. You were very close to getting your moose. Thanks for the story and good luck with the rest of your hunting, especially your deer hunt mate.
