I am heading away calf hunting next week so I am looking for some ideas. Wondering if a calf in distress call would work and bring in a cow with a calf? Thanks, |

Calling a Calf out after you shot the cow is one thing, calling a Cow out with her Calf is tough. Most of the time she would leave her Calf well hidden if she comes out to a call. You need to find Calf signs first. Most of the Calf we shot, we kept quiet, we knew they were there because of pre-scouting and then spent hours/days sitting and waiting in beaver ponds or cut overs. We would always get to area when dark, leave bikes a mile or so away and walk in the dark. Watch the wind, if it's not right dont bother going in. Another way is with a canoe on rivers. Good Luck |

Never seen a cow come to a call with her calf but not saying they won't. Most of the time when we have gotten lucky and shot a calf the shooter was just sitting quiet on a bog, Only once did the shooter have a Cow and Calf come out after calling but they were being pushed by a Bull so that might have had something to do with it. Norma hit the nail on the head, find some good area near water or some fresh cutovers. I have never heard of anyone using a calf distress call to hunt calves but if you try it let us know how it works out for ya. |

The only thing I've had happen is after calling the night before, I snuck in to my calling location and a cow and calf were standing 20 ft from where I was calling from. Not sure if they came to check out the area of the call, or if it was coincidence. |
