Great question. I am not sure myself. I would think you would have to make all reasonable effort to ensure you game does not spoil, if deboning it will help then that is probably a good move. I have deboned an elk before in the mountains of New Mexico.

I did some research and here is a lay mans type interpretation. The regulation applies until you stop transporting the “thing”. According to the regulations the once the animal is butcher, it appears, becomes a different thing. So once you butcher the animal and distribute it among your party this regulation no longer applies. No matter where it is butchered.

I hope this no not too confusing. But most of our regulations are written in legalese.

The last moose we brought home was skinned and cut up in small enough chunks to get it out of the woods. We kept the parts necessary per regulations to get it to the butcher. Before leaving the butcher we divided the meat and placed it in coolers and boxes until the group final split up in Sudbury to travel to our respective homes.

This is where the regulation can be found, use the following search criteria: “game \0\ transport” and select the first document in the list.

so i emailed the MNR and this was the reply they gave me

Hi,

Thank you for your enquiry and we apologize for the delay in responding
to your e-mail.

If you are transporting part of a moose, you must know, and
be prepared to state, if requested to do so by a conservation officer:
* The name of the hunter who sealed the animal
* The hunting licence and validation tag number under
which the animal was claimed
* The WMU in which it was taken.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Natural Resources
Information Centre at 1-800-667-1940.
