Me and dad headed up to the moose camp for this weeks hunt last Sunday. We had a bull tag and cow tag and some calf tags. Opening morning couldn't come fast enough. We all got out to our spots before first light. Around 8am its pouring rain and I hear my dad's 300winmag roar just over the ridge about 400 yards away. Turns out 4 moose came out of the swamp, two bulls and two cows. Another gang near us pushed them out. My dad shot the first one that gave him a clean shot. Turns out it was the smaller of the two bulls but we didn't care. No shot at the cows. ![]() ![]() That moose took about 4 hours to get back to camp since everything was so wet, it was a hard pull for the quads. Wednesday it poured rain again all day. Most of us went out in the morning but after that everyone stayed at camp, besides me and two other guys. We split up and went for a sit until dark. I walked to a very large swamp couple miles from camp. I just got sitting down on a fallen log under a pine tree to keep me a little drier, cracked open my can of pop and lit a smoke and waited. Not 15 minutes later I look across the swamp and I see 3 moose coming out of the bush. Put my binos up and its a bull with two cows following him. I jumped over to the back side of the log I was sitting on, laid down prone, rested my gun on the log, figured it was about 350 yards and touched one off with my 300winmag. None of the moose moved so I shot 2 more times and after the last shot I watched threw my scope as the cow tipped over and legs in the air. The bull and other cow took off across the swamp. I actually paced it off the best i could without getting buried in the mud and it was 374 yards. I only hit her with my 3rd shot, quartering away got her threw both lungs and the bullet exited just in front of the shoulder. I couldn't believe it. I radioed my buddy and he went back to camp to get more help. By 9pm that night we had her hanging at camp, still pouring rain. We were done hunting after that, still had calf tags but figured we would let them be. She was a dry cow as well and bigger than my dads bull LOL ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() by friday morning, 13 of us seen probably 10 different moose, atleast 6 of them were bulls. Two monster 50"+ ones, a good sized bear and probably 10 deer. Couple nice bucks too. Couldn't of asked for a better week, can't wait for next year. |
