Well the story is late, but I had to jump on a plane to Alberta to work on the oil rigs. After 26 years of moose hunting and 15 years of guiding, this moose hunt was special. My 16 year old son was on his first moose hunt, something we both had being waiting a long time for. There were going to be 8 hunters in camp, 3 bull tags,1 cow tag. This hunt was action filled from start to finish. The first morning, I was hunting with my son Austen and good friend Kyle. It wasn't long and the boys were face to face with a big bull at 4 yards. They now knew what I meant by, "it can happen real fast!" The bull came and went so fast it left the boys with wide eyes and opened mouths. Minutes later, there was a cow standing at 10 yards, but unfortunately in the wrong WMU. Day after day we were into the moose, but on day 8 it was a moose hunters dream! Cold, frosty, foggy and quiet. We started into the swamp as light was coming up. On the second set of calls, I was cut off by 2 bulls grunting and coming hard. After about 30 minutes the bulls started to fade, knowing this game well, the chase was on. About 45 minutes later of calling, grunting, raking and running the bull turned to come, with eyes rolled back in his head. His antlers swaying from side to side he stepped out at 18 yards. Three guys at full draw, and 30 minutes later Kyle was standing over a 50 inch bull.![]() The next morning some good friends, Rob and Krista, put bull number 2 on the ground. Krista's first moose, a 6 point bull. ![]() With 2 days left, the boys and I started down an old logging road at day break. It wasn't long when we had a bull grunting and a cow calling. The chase was on again! Running, calling and raking and 20 minutes later we were looking at a huge bull with a cow. I gave Kyle my shoulder blade and he began to rake the brush. The bull turned and was coming at 8 yards, facing Austen, as he raked the brush. The bull turned and walked right by us at 4 yards. Austen's arrow found its mark, mine just behind, 20 yards later the 51 inch bull was on the ground. A hunt every dad dreams of! ![]() |

Sounds like a great hunt ! Is this Ontario ? BTW - what is the middle picture of the crossbow shot moose ? Looks like a calv with horns , no insult intended here, but I have never seen such a small moose with horns ?? Maybe its just the picture ? I happen to harvest my first Moose with archery gear this fall Kyle |
