Im planning on( fingers crossed for a bull tag) to hunting in 15b on my way back after a saskatchewan deer hunt, from about dec 2cd-8th or 10th. I totally new to 15 b and would love to go up scouting but its a pretty long haul from sudbury. I heard to stay away from graham rd and was thinking somewhere down 527 or 811. Is there any lodging along that highway( I doubt it) Just have to use the wall tent. I'm hoping it wont be to crowded that late. But if anyone could give me a bit or info or advice that would be great. I've already read all the other 15b threads.

Thanks

YK,

That is a fun time of year to hunt, but logistically it can be tough. You won't find it overly crowded at that time of year, with the vast majority of hunters being local. There are no accomodations open up 527 or 811 at that time of year. If you are going to tent it make sure you aren't too far off the beaten path / or are paying good attention to the weather forecast as we often get enough snow around the first week in Dec that getting out of the bush could be tough. This past Dec you would have been fine, the year before not so much as we got 2-3 feet during the last week of Nov/first week of Dec. Depending on snow conditions, a snow machine might be the only way to get off the main roads. A snow machine or quad would really help locate areas with concentrations of tracks. The concentrations of moose will be in the real dirty stuff by then.

Should PM corman 30, He has had lots of good hunts in the late season in that area

The gram might be quieter that time of year but most of the guys I know also had a Tundra snow machine with them

Sudbury guy eh ? I'm out in Markstay.

Welcome to OTB.

Pakashkan lodge is open late
Albert from the Shell in Upsala has a bus that he rents out and will drive it to a pre-determined location for you
There are many options......
But I suggest that you don't tent it that time of year
but if you are brave and you want to tent it then there are quite a few places along Graham that provide great spots to camp

Lol, good ole Albert. Its been a couple years since ive talked with him, but hes quite the character. As he told me "i dont get the gun out of the cabinet till the beginning of december, you can pick which moose you want to shoot as there all in a group". Of coarse i missed a couple choice "f" words thrown in there too, lmao

2 years ago I rolled my truck at KM 6 on the Graham rd........"rise of surprise" is what that little hill is called.
Big ass pot hole, blew tire, roll over..
Well walked away with some bruises and my other passengers had some brusies and one suffered a lower back injury
Too make a long story short we went from 3 trucks and trailers to 2
Albert and his crew stored my tralier my atv and our entire camp at that Shell for us and regularly called to see how I was doing
Now that is some serious customer service.
Oh yeah my truck was a complete F'n right off

Thanx Albert for everything!!!

Yup Im a sudburyboy,. Thanks for the info everyone. Its good to know there are options for staying somewhere. Would anyone mind sharing their thoughts as to weather graham rd would be better hunting or up 527 or 811?

Both areas are good.
You just have to do some homework...

YK,

Its impossible to say which would be better. Keep in mind that neither the Graham or 527/811 have overly high densities of moose (in comparison to some of the other units in the NW), but for those willing to explore, there are some moderate-high density pockets up both roads. You're timing is great for exploration, because there should be snow which will allow you to search for such a pocket more effectively. There has been a lot more cutting up 527/811 than the Graham in the last 10 years, so you'd have access to a much greater number of cuts that are of the optimal age for winter hunting. Take a look at Google Earth to see where the cutting has been. If you choose not to stay in your tent, then the west side of the unit may be better as it will offer more options for accomodations. In addition to the places previously mentioned it might be worth checking out Savanne River Resort. It would give you access to the Graham and Dog River Rd.

I can only speak of the graham rd area as i have not been to the the other areas, but there are plenty of moose up in that area, not as many as there used to be im told, but still enough for an experienced hunter. Most of my experience is between the 60-100 km markers and i see fresh sign and or moose almost everyday hunting. The latest i have ever hunted up there is the last week of october, so im not sure if there still in the area in december though, or yarded up elsewhere.

Another option would be dog river rd. which is east of Upsala. I have never been up there, yet, but have been told it has newer cuts and more of them, again, its heresay as i haven't seen it with my own eyes. Someone on here has to have some info on that area though.

By the look of your pics, you've got plenty of experience to figure out a game plan where ever you decide.

Thanks for all the great Info,
Thinking about this hunt is getting me excited. Like I said I'd be totally new to the area so its nice to hear everyones descriptions of the area. Its actually like a bonus season because our deer and moose season are closed around sudbury then, so basically I'm going to saskatchwan( bonus 1) and then hopefully an NW ontario moose hunt on the way back( bonus # 2).

Dog River being a lot closer to Savanne
Graham if I'm not mistaken is about 25 k
From there
Savanne has great accommodations as well
Stayed there a week for a late season hunt......

Spent Many years Hunting 15B, Saw lots of moose, Some days we had tags and others was just calf hunting. Been to Gram, Spruce Riiver Road. Not to many fresh cuts going on now but next time I fly home I will look and see what new cuts are opening up on the Armstrong Highway.
