I'm seeing if anyone has any tips or suggestion on how to tag a cow moose as this year we didn't have enough guys to get a bull tag. So I'm hoping some of you can help me out with some info or know of some old threads on how to bag a cow.

Thanks Guys
Kevin

If you are bowhunting hunt the waterways. I have seen the majority of cows near water either with or without calves. If you are rifle hunting, ideally hunt where there is water and fairly dense timber close by a cutover. As far as calling, learn to calf call (higher pitched cow call and short duration) and even a soft cow call (not a long drawn out lovesick call) will sometimes draw in a lonesome cow. Cows are not that easy to target and I think they are mostly taken either when with a bull or by chance. These are just some of my own observations. I don't typically hunt cows though. Good luck.

i'd love to help out but we have shot all of our cows, which are 4 in 5 yrs by pure luck. last yr one walked out of the bush infront of one of our guys and he shot it. Pretty much all the others we have come across either walking to our spot or driving around

It depends on where and when yoy're hunting.

When I hunt the Parry Sound district (gun hunt) in the third week of October, I usually still hunt, and regularly come across both bulls and cows. Some of our guys stump sit at natural funnels, and often see cows.

During the early bow hunt in Kapuskasing, we try to get them to come to a call. The terrain I hunt is largely black spruce swamp, and walking is extremely difficult. We generally use cow calls, but the only cows we've seen up close have been with bulls. This year we plan to use the same basic philosophy adding a Montana decoy, and mixing in some calf distress calls. This way we hope to bring in any cows that may be hanging back or orbiting us.
