September 19th 2012.... the weather was quite rainy, the wind was blowing from the south at about 10-15 kms/hr, the temperature was 6 degrees. I started to call about a 1/2 an hour prior to day break, after my third set of cow calls I could hear two bulls on the opposite side of the hill that I had set up on. The bulls were moving around the downside wind of where I was set up. I thought that they were trying to get downwind just to smell what they thought was a cow. I snuck over the hill that was separating us and I could hear the bulls walking and raking as they were moving through the bush. As I was directly upwind from them at this point I sprayed some love scent in the air and set up in a little clump of spruce and tag alders. I made two cow calls but both bulls stayed buried in the bush burping. I changed my call and I started to mimic their burps and grunts. Shortly after that the smaller of the two bulls started his approach to me. I could see him walking between the trees over the little knoll that was separating us...as he took each and every step he was burping. At this time he was approximately 60-65 yards away from me. He stopped moving and making all noise, he just stood there, I burped a few more times then he started coming in closer. At 37 yards he stopped and all that I could see of him was his golden brown antlers. I had drawn my bow by this point however with him stopping I had to relax my bow. I grunted one more time and he put his head down and started burping and walking towards me. I drew back my bow just prior to his head becoming visible, he continued to walk and sway to 20 yards. He was quartering towards me at this point...I made sure my bow was level...sight and pin were lined up and I released the trigger...his closest front leg was set back a bit. I placed the shot just in front of his leg/shoulder...the arrow found it mark as it travelled right through the center of his heart. He spun around and ran into the bush from where he came out of...at 32 yards I saw him collaspe...the bush went silent.....

As I sat there so thankful for the amazing hunt that had just occurred, I looked up and there was a 44-48 inch bull standing on the edge of the alders...I sat and watched him for a few minutes then he disappeared into the forest...burping away. It was simply amazing.

I hunted for three days in a row...on the first day I encountered a 50-55 inch bull that swam across a beaver pond only to hold up in the middle of it at 63 yards then swim away...and two other moose that came to my call making tons of noise only to hold up shortly of showing themselves.

I experienced this amazing hunt in WMU 3, and I use a Whisper Creek compound bow outfitted with Mathews accesories.

I'm am planning on a European mount. Had I got the big one that came in the first day...it would've been a full shoulder mount.
