looking at a 91 polaris 250 4x4 atv, two stroke, good shape, with a winch and a snow plow. what are peoples thoughts/experiences with this machine, and what kind of price range would you think it would fit into?
thanks guys,

I have 3 polaris 4 wheelers. One is a 1990 350 , just like you described above. It has been a real tuff bike and very dependable. Depending on shape but I would guess around $1,500. But the winch and snowplow is worth something as well.

I'd be a little leary on a 2 stroke Polaris, they tend to blow up.

For the last 18yrs I have owned 2 Honda ATV's.......
an 86(2 yrs old) and a 93(which I bought brand spankin new)
And I have never had any issues with those machines.......aside from reg maintinence.
As for Polaris machines, really can't comment on em, I strongly suggest you look at a Honda atv :biker:

Agreed 100%

Only way to go, Yamaha is close second.

Whatever you do, stay miles away from Polaris or Arctic Cat.

Actually...........

Be cautious of all CVT systems. Most brands that use it almost always have issues with belts slipping/burning. The biggest problem is they take in water/goop.....then you end up walking home. Honda is the only one that has automatic, but doesn't use CVT tranny's. I own one, have over 18,920 kms on it and have never had a problem. (its a 2004 Rincon that I bought brand new)

I have a 350 big bear and it will haul anything I dare shoot at. I am on my second one since 1987 and neither of them have ever let me down in any way. Not the fastest or cushiest but for a hunting bike they can't be beat.

I have had a Yamaha Kodiak 450 for 5 years and it has been great and it has taken some pretty mean rides. I also use Honda 350s at work and have had no problem with them either. My neighbour has an Arctic Cat and has spent a fortune trying to keep it running and I know it doesn't get the rough use my bikes get.

If you didn't get a wet butt, then the water level wasn't over the belt housing, therefore no water likely got it.

You gotta take it higher than the floorboards missmod! lol)))

I'm in the same situation, looking (or is it dreaming) to buy an atv. I've used most brands at one time or another at the hunt camp, but have never owned one. I decided the best approach would be to go to a repair shop, and ask the guys which ones are in most often and which ones they'd recommend. I did this at three shops and the answers were pretty consistent. Honda and Yamaha get top marks, Arctic Cat and Polaris get the lowest. Suzuki, and CanAm are somewhere in between. However, I know some Polaris and Cat owners who absolutely love their machines and will buy nothing but. I guess it's like buying anything else, you can get a good one, or you can get a lemon. Some manufacturers just have a reputaton for making more lemons than others.

I'm with missmod on this one. I've had 2 different honda's before, first being a 96 foreman 400 and second was a 2000 foreman es 450. They were good bikes at best. I've tried all the honda's before buying the atv I have now and wasn't impressed. The ride on them is just like riding a wild horse, they are slow as heck and most of them aren't even 4x4, they are only 3x4. I have a 2005 Arctic Cat 500 and it's the best bike i've had by far. Since I live north in the province I'm on my atv almost everyday and put tons of miles on it and never had anything go wrong with it. As for the belts slipping in water and what not, I have news for you my freind. I've been through water holes and yes "my but got wet" and never had any issues with my belt afterwards.

I guess it depends on what kind of atv you really want, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Tom it is a matter of preference....there are lots for sale in the TBay area....check Kijiji...and the paper. Also the Buy,Sell Northwest there has been some in there as well.
See if you are able to take a test drive to see which you like in terms of steering and ride....and don't rush into one...take your time.

Great point stump!

All you have to do is ask a certified mechanic, they are the ones that would know.
