Was talking to the wife and we are thinking of getting new phones. At the migration fest in Kingsville this weekend there was a dealer who had satellite phones (Globalstar dealer), cost is $19.95 a month (all you can use satellite airtime), phone cost is about $300. This phone supposedly works everywhere due to it being a satellite phone. Thinking of doing this and scrapping our land line.

that seems like a good deal? I don't know much about them though. Would that mean you can do all long distance and local calling with that and its only 20 bucks a month?

Interesting.

Trash the land line and the cell phone... hmmmm... that would certainly pay off.

that sounds too good to be true, we pay a fortune for two cell phones, and no landline at home, and are limited to the amount of time we can use it. and the coverage, garbage. if thats actually how it seems, it sounds incredible. Id be intrigued to find out what kind of service coverage it has, if it actually works everywhere, and good, would be crummy, to have patchy service as a home phone. but very intriguing!!

I have used my buddies sat phone a few times and they are not like a regular cell phone. The quality is different with breaks in the flow. I wonder if you can also get internet access or would you also need a land line of some type for that? One thing about sat phones though is they work everywhere in the world. I called my wife from the tundra while on a caribou hunt. Very slick.

thats what has me interested, i can call from anywhere due to it not using towers but using the satellites.
I might see about a rental for a month or so before jumping on the band wagon

I would buy it in a minute! One thing about satellite phones, all the ones I have used you have to be outside to get service. Might be a bummer, that.

I have used Sat phones a fair bit and they cannot (not any of the ones I used) be used indoors, as well there are times when you have a difficult time picking up a satellite signal and you will lose the signal some times during your phone call and have to call again. Any of the phones I have used are a fair bit larger than the cell phones people are used to.

They are a great tool especially where you can't get regular cell service but I don't think they could replace a cell phone and definitely not a home phone. That's just my opinion based on the ones I have seen and used. I hope this helps.

Now, if they could come up with a hybrid cell/sat phone that would be the ticket!!

Maybe Canada has something different from the US, but I called my Globalstar dealer, who also sells other kinds of st phones and service. I was told Globalstar does not have the satellite support yet and does not cover all places. Did not hear of a phone which was a cell and sat phone although that sounds fantastic.

Which left me with the option of the BIg Fat Iridium which works fantastic outdoors , anywhere in the world, but they said you could get antennas. A little expensive also.

Yeah, that's true. I guess it could be a problem with reception if you're indoors.
