opening morning, we had walked into an area where there was fresh sign,, I went in alone, and Mike went in parallel to me about a km further in.... it was dark,, just light enough to be legal............. about an hour and a half into it.. I sat down on a stump, watching and listening,, I looked back down where I had walked, and see movement,, a wolf!!! I had never seen one this close, he got to about 30 yards, he didn't see me. his nose was to the dirt, then he raised his head, and sniffed the air, took a few more steps and vanished into the thick bush! at one point I had him in my scope, more than anything to get a clear view of him than to shoot him.

would you have shot him or let him be?
everywhere we went there was wolf sign,, we saw 3 in total over the time we were out.

You probably needed a special tag up there to shoot that wolf under the new regulations. A wolf rug is a nice trophy and that would likely save a few moose over the winter.

I would definately shoot it this time.....a few yrs ago, we were making a deer push in a [articular area.....three of us....at about eye sight away in the thick cover....i was in the middle....about 45 minutes into the push i came upon a series of mogols in a valley on top of a hill...as I was running down the second one and making my way up the third mogel, as i crested the mogel, in the next hole was two huge timberwolves sleeping to my left at about 10 -to 12 ft away....my instinct was to flick my safety and point the gun to the animals from the hip position....as they both slowly got up from their beds, with their hairs straight up on their backs, piercing through the snow that had fell overnight on their backs. It was quite an experience, goose bumps started on the back of my neck as they slowly started to walk parallel in front of me just as scared as I was while staring at me piercingly and in a paralyzing glare without breaking eye contact....and as they moved away from me in a circular pattern, they never took their eyes off me....as also did I.....lol....trust me I was already to make that hip shot if needed be....their faith was in their hands.....afterwards when my hunting partners asked me why i had slowed down behind them, and told them what happen , both insisted that i should've shot them....in one way i'm glad i didn't and yet knowing what I know now, I would definately take the shot.....and later bye a wolf sticker....or stickers.......lol

Well if your hunting for a specific game such as big game, and you have a hard time of seeing or locating the animal that your after but you see wolves and wolf sign everywhere with a few more sightings of wolves the predature should have been shot.
Thats just my opinion.....

I would have let him walk, like you, only reason is that you are moose hunting not wolf hunting, I would hate to shoot a wolf then hear from a buddy that a big bull started to run from your location. Just my opinion

Tough call, If I had a adult moose tag I wouldn't of shot him but like most of us get calf tags like 100% of the time I'd take him out on the spot.

Would I have shot him, to answer that question you only need to look at this picture....

This is what a bunch of wolfs did to my moose in less than 2 hours after shooting it. There was more damage but I did not take pictures of it all. I seen more wolf and bear sign this year than I ever have in 20 years of moose hunting.

Time to do some thinning....

DDRetrievers, you are right about the amount of wolf and bear signs this year, they were everywhere. We saw 3 bears and the amount of wolf sign was just nuts. By the way, if you are hunting in most of the north you need a tag to shoot a wolf (2/season max). Another "spring bear" fiasco from southern Ontario or just a tax grab by the fat cats in T.O.??? Wolves should be "seen and not heard" of afterwards. By the way the amount of moose sign seen this year was way down and we covered a large area.
