A guy I know in Michigan called me a couple days ago, he had been talking to a couple guys at work he knows and they had been charged by the dnr ( not the guy I know) . The guys were hunting over a bait , which is now illegal in half of Michigan. Anyways the dnr walked in and caught them ( obviously they knew the bait was there) The two guys were each given a fine and told that they could not have a pile of bait and that it would have to be spread out? They made the two hunters kick the bait around and scatter it, not rebag it and carry it out. After it was scattered around the dnr told the guys they could continue there hunt that evening. Now the guys still have to pay there fines but they could continue to hunt over there bait after it was scattered out? Now here is the question I was asked about this: if the bait is scattered out and not in a pile where the deer are not nose to nose in order to eat it is it legal? |

I don't know, but it sure don't make any sense to me whether the bait is in a pile or spread out. |

I find it hard to believe that the DNR said they could hunt because it was spread out.Bait is bait.I remember my buddy in Michigan getting into it because the DNR thought he was slightly over the limit.Maybe they wanted to give them another ticket, lol.I know the DNR doesn't take breking the law lightly. They ticketed a scrap yard dealer twice for using a cross bow.Brent J.. |

If the facts in this case are accurate the dnr in Michigan is laughable. Obviously it is baiting even if it isn't in a pile. Here is the law in Wisconsin. You can have 2 gallons of bait per 40 acres. Here are some of the funny questions that come up when asking about this law. Does all of the 2 gallons have to be put in one spot or can it be scattered around the 40 acres, what if I have 2 gallons on my fence line and the neighbor has 2 gallons 100 yards from my fenceline. We now have 4 gallons within 100 yards. Are we both in violation? If the deer eat 2 gallons before noon can I put another 2 gallons out or is that considered 4 gallons. If I put out cob corn do you count the cob which the deer don't eat? If I cut down a cedar tree for bait how do you measure what is bait and what is ''wood''? If I'm on public land how can I know if someone is baiting right beside me and we are over the 2 gallon per 40 acre law, I could go on and on but these are actual questions that come up when the wardens try to enforce this 2 gallon limit in Wisconsin. Good luck Michigan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I went to the DNR Michigan wedsite. They must have been in a baiting area, but their are conditions on being legal. No more than two gallons and it has to be spread out over a 10' x 10' area to have the feed separated like you would find in a harvested field.BTW minerals are also considered a food source.brent j.. |

No they were not in a baiting area. They were fined for baiting and had to spread out there bait to resume hunting. Thats why this story doesnt make sence. |
