In area 37 I'm hearing from buddies that they are seeing a heard of 30 around Iron Bridge, seems like a good size herd and every year they are increasing. I just wish they had the herd that Bancroft started with.
I didn't fight my way to the top of the food chain to be a vegetarian.

Saw three live elk one time there a couple of years ago, but they were deep in an open field almost 1,000 yards away.

Would love to see one up close and personal!

they need to raise some money for more programs and offer a hunt, be a great idea to have a bull elk hunt, offer 500 tickets for $100 a peice for a chance to hunt an elk, get a local outfitter to hook them up with lodging and a guide. All money goes back into herd management.
Shooting a bull elk won;t hurt the herd one bit as many other bulls will gladly take over his duties

Sault Ste. Marie

There is a healthy herd east of Sault Ste. Marie. I saw seven of them in the spring grazing in one field. A buddy of mine who commutes into SSM saw a nice bull this year along the highway.

Turkeys are also taking off in this area as well. A couple of weekends ago I was heading out for ducks when I saw about 30 birds out in a field near where I duck hunt and close to where the elk hangout.

It'll be many years before they open up any hunting season for Elk, since there are not really large herds to speak of in some areas such as deer when you see them herd up in the winter months I believe.....

A friend of mine has a few living in his bush lot and feeding in his fields. Driving past his place one day I had to lock up the brakes so I wouldn't hit this massive buck that was nearly as big as a moose. It took a second to register that it was the lead bull of his group of elk. Well he came very very close to going into my freezer as road kill! Unfortunately that same spot yields enough road kill to feed several families each year (deer, elk and moose). It is just about the perfect funnel and all sorts of game use it. Hope the elk reproduce quickly so they open a season on them, but the local bios will probably just round up the excess herd and ship them south like they have done in the past. Can't have the hunters harvesting their pets.

We're starting to see Elk all the time when we are travelling forestry roads all around Bancroft. Have seen some huge bulls. Man if they ever open a season I'd be all over it, cottage is centrally located to a lot of great areas.

Take a kid hunting...you'll need someone to drag it when you get older! They are our future.
