Well I just received a call from my plant and my whole department, consisting of 20 workers, will be laid off, along with about 12 others from other departments. Being a licensed operator I will be going back Jan 12th when the rest could be gone up to 35 weeks. :(
I guess this will allow me to keep caught up on my taxidermy work.

Sorry about your personal misfortune Alf and all.

But with GM's recent announcement the spin off industries will be laying off too. Truly sad but not unexpected I would imagine.

I feel yor pain, the plant I worked at closed in the summer, and it seems every week they announce a new plant closing in my city. Not too many left. But on a good note I'm back in school for HVAC Tech and the government is paying my full cost.

I've been reading all the posts and there are so many out of work, it just seems that this country is really going down hill and fast. Soon we'll all be working in a call centre for utility money for the house only... and knowing that we can't buy much with our pay.
Unemployment insurance only lasts so long .....then what. :(

Alf,where do you work??

I work at a wax refinery. Most goes out to packaging and candle makers. Another big buyer is goodyear, among many other things. Orders just slowed right down.
The refinery department is still in operation because we ship out alot of liquid through rail cars and transport, I held off going out there, but when things get going I will be heading out there the next opening.
Fortunately 3 of us will be back early and running on one shift.

Well at 50 years old & never ever been laid off, I am off from Dec. 23 until Feb. 9th :yikes:

They could have at least done it in October when the good hunting was on :(

Hope things get better.

Happening all over right now, my plant laidoff 8 at the beginning of the month and there saying if it stay's slow come the new year 5 to 8 more. If there's another after that I will be going. The only place's that I know of that are busy are the food corp. other then that I here nothing but layoff's everywhere. Hope for the best for everyone during these hard time's.

I work for Pilkington Glass of Canada ,we build windshield's for GM,Ford and Chrysler ,since we are now owned by NSG a Japanese corp we now also build for Toyota and Lexus ,we also will be building for Honda as well in the near future. We were laid off for a week 2 weeks ago,we will be finished this week till Jan 4th and then we will work for 2 week's and we'll be laid off once again ,for another 2 weeks. Not a great time for all of this ,but then again I don't think there is ever a good time for lay off's, although money will be tight this year ,I'm going to enjoy the extra time hunting for my buck before the season's over ,then in January I think I'll get out and try to get myself a few yotes for the contest.

I turned down a position back in the summer at a Sobeys distribution plant through Cimco Refrigeration, I was happy where I was and thought I was somewhat secure, you just never know either way I guess.

When you're laid off do you get any kind of a severance type of money? Can you collect EI when you're laid off? Can you get another job for the interim?

your supposed to be looking for a job
can't leave the country
if they want you at an info session you better be there or you lose your EI
max EI right now is $726 take home every 2 weeks i beleive

few more rules i can't remeber
